indeed! there were many 'post 70s' albums from Italy I had to leave off my list and the Ske is one of the best!

Goblin are the only band to match the other 3 so far. As great as miracoli, rosenbach, alphataurus and maxophone are, they are only one album bands
according to what I read from your post, wouldn't you have forgotten The New Trolls and their offshoots in your reasoning??
If we have to count by adding every band's output to quantify or list by magnitude of achievement, than my clear Italian winner is Perigeo
their first four are awesome (I could've listed all our in my previous post), not even counting the posthumous double live
I've yet to hear their post 75 album and the two 80's thingies, btw
For me, there's only one band who equals or surpasses your Italian "big three," and that's Area. In fact if I did a big three, it would be Area, Banco, and PFM. I like the four Le Orme albums from Collage to Contrappunti a lot, but not as much as the other three bands, whose key albums I think are in a different league.
After those, for my tastes, I don't think there are any that equal or surpass those four bands for quality, and quantity of quality output. Here are those that I think come closest:
Apoteosi
Arti + Mestieri
Il Balletto di Bronzo
Il Baricentro
Bella Band
Etna
Festa Mobile
Goblin (really just for Profundo Rosso and Roller)
Maxophone
Metamorfosi
Napoli Centrale
Picchio Dal Pozzo
L Uovo Di Colombo
Bill
Besides Area, Stormy Six....other albums that are personal gems for me are:
Osanna - Palepoli
Alusa Falux - Intorno...
Cervello - Melos
Pichio Dal Pozzo - s/t and Abiamo...
Locanda Della Fate - Forse....
Area is my top italian band, but I cant see anybody mentioning Yugen ???
Yeah, that's about what I'd say. I particularly like the Etna, which is fusiony but also pretty "Proggy" to my ears as well. Bella Band is definitely more jazz rock. I'd also recommend starting with the first Napoli Centrale album, which is probably my favorite of their three 70s albums.

Not yet mentioned, but worth mentioning: Il Paese Dei Balocchi
I was asked to submit my Top 30 for this site a few years back. There are two PFMs, one Banco and one Orme, but other than that it fits the premise of this thread:

no, their first album was 2008. Udi Koorman was sound engineer for that one and Iridium too I believe. I only referenced those other albums as recommendations to Jay Dee in his quest for Canterbury style or influenced. I see em that way but others may not. I love the Mooggg album. I keep waiting for Starsky and Hutch to kick my door in. aside from that, I'll still stick with the three "70's" I picked.
Yeah, it was just arranged alphabetically by album title. I wasn't asked to make it in any kind order.
Ys would make my Top 5, easy. In fact, my Top 5 would probably be as follows:
5. New Trolls - Searching For a Land (for the 1st LP of the double which is SO strong. Too bad the 2nd isn't 1/10th as good)
4. Reale Accademia Di Musica - S/T
3. Balletto Di Bronzo - Ys
2. PFM - Chocolate Kings
1. Adriano Monteduro & Reale Accademia Di Musica - S/T
