30th anniversary edition CD/DVD with lots of goodies as well as a vinyl edition, released January 21, 2013.
Also of note is the news that they've been busy working on a new album!

I'll buy this because I'm a hardcore fan, but...It's a bit tiresome buying essentially the same album 3 to 5 times. I get why all the bands do it, but...:meh
Not interested in the remix, but news on the new album is killer(especially since IQ has had some personnel changes since Frequency). Would nice to showcase the newest members on something; well, new old member in the case of Tim.

GEP are set to release the 2013 remix of ‘Tales from the Lush Attic’ on 21st January 2013 (surprisingly enough) in both a double disc CD/DVD format and on vinyl.
Producer Mike Holmes: “When we did the 25th anniversary edition of The Wake we took the finished stereo mix and re-mastered it. It made a big difference to the overall sound, but we weren’t able to give it a complete remix because the multi track tapes had been lost in the mists of time. However with ‘Tales’ we could go right back to the beginning, using the original 24 track tapes to build the mix from scratch.”
“It was great to finally give this album the mix it deserved. I’ve spent years avoiding the studio release of Tales, just because I knew it could be so much better. It is now”.
The 30th anniversary special edition of ‘Tales’ is a double disc hard back 32 page book with lots of extras, including the complete remix of the album and a DVD featuring live video footage of material from ‘Tales’ along with a host of MP3 files, original mixes, audio commentary and previously unreleased writing/rehearsal/demo material. Copies of the 2 disc CD/DVD edition will be available at the two upcoming Christmas shows.
‘Tales from the Lush Attic 2013 remix’ will also be available in limited edition vinyl format: 180 gram, gatefold sleeve – 500 black and 500 clear vinyl.
The full track listing for the CD/DVD edition is:

I wonder if this will get the backlashing that the Genesis remixes got? IQ should release a concert dvd from a show in '83 next year(if such thing exists). It would be cool to see Pete in makeup and full costume. The only live document I have is the Live From London dvd, which was filmed in '85. Was that filmed for tv? Actually, a plus would be if someone could get rid of that awkward silence before the first track actually begins.

Oh, wow, a new IQ album... I was starting to lose hope. The Seventh House, Dark Matter, and Frequency are all very special to me and I would love, love, love it if they were able to get something out before 2013 vanishes.

AFAIK no decent footage of early IQ exists. If you want Peter in full regalia I would say that the IQ20 dvd comes quite close with the first ever live performance of Headlong with Tim Esau on bass. Apparently they never had played that one live in them days.

I wonder if this will get the backlashing that the Genesis remixes got?Considering that the original TFTLA sounded like it was recorded using the microphone on a very cheap cassette recorder placed in the bathroom of the studio they were in, it *has* to be an improvement, right? I love this album anyways and it was great to see them at UCLA in 1993 at the first ProgFest, The Last Human Gateway was amazing.

There is a very well filmed, great sounding concert from just before Peter left that is available on a DVD series called "Live from London". The company that produced it is called "The Iguana project". I don't think IQ have approved this release, it seems to have nothing to do with GEP and there are lots of other bands listed on the inside cover so I hope that IQ themselves put it out one day (or, maybe they don't have the rights to the footage???)
I picked this up from one of the vendors at Rosfest (not the IQ table) and the setlist is
Awake and Nervous
Outer Limits
It all stops here
Just changing hands
The Wake
The Magic Roundabout
Widow's Peak
The Thousand Days
Corners
Recorded at the Camden Palace, London on 13th May 1985 so it would have been more appropiate for "The Wake" release. I'm not sure why they wouldn't have used it on that box set. I guess Peter's voice is maybe a little rough but I love it--it's a great video that I watch often.
I think some of it can be viewed on youtube if you want to check it out, I'll try and find the links.
I also bought tons of stuff at the IQ table so I don't feel TOO guilty buying what is possibly a non-approved-by-the-band release. I have to say it's very worth owning and if it is a boot, it's very well brought out.
And sure, I would like to pick up the "new" Lush Attic when it's out :) Even though I think I was one of those people to complain about the Genesis remasters, it makes sense that Lush Attic could be vastly improved.
And even better a new Iq album in 2013? GREAT!!!

Ken, that looks great! I should check it out. And I fully agree about the new release. As much as I like the early albums, I think they really improved beginning with Ever and beyond. The last four or so in particular have been excellent, and I welcome another slab of IQ goodness! :)

Yep, though as mentioned the focus at that show was mainly The Wake material, and Peter doesn't do much in the way of theatrics.
However, he does deliver the full monty on the Forever Live taping, at least for "The Enemy Smacks".

It was footage from a TV program recorded at Camden Palace, and is from the same "gig" represented on the 'Living Proof' CD. I put "gig" in quotation marks, because the show was put on expressly for the purpose of filming for the TV series, and took place late morning or early afternoon, I can't recall. It did have a technical glitch or two, iirc. (Wouldn't be IQ if it didn't.)

Will this be released by Insideout Music in the U.S? If so, will there be plenty of archive photos from the album's recording? Was the photo(s) included in the Insideout reissue from '06 from the album recording sessions? I didn't think so, because I remember seeing photos of a baby-faced Mike Holmes(i.e no beard) on the old IQ website many years ago.

These were sold at the two Xmas gigs the band did last weekend. I have my copy here and it's a thing of beauty and well worth the £15 price for a full album plus bonus tracks plus DVD with video of Lush Attic songs from one of last year's concerts and many extra MP3s of demos/alternate mixes, a commentary on the album with Pete Nicholls and Mike Holmes and MP3s of the original Seven Stories Into Eight album.
As ever, the package is stunningly well put together with a 32 page booklet including extensive sleeve notes on both the making of the original album with contributions from all band members and Mike Holmes' take on the remix project itself. I'm told that Pete Nicholls gave Tony Lythgoe - the album designer - around 230 original photos and pieces of artwork from his archives to use for the project.
As to the sound of it, well, I'm not the best person to judge being fairly lenient when it comes to sound quality but even I can tell it's clearer, sharper and better balanced. I'm hearing things I never heard before on it and I've been very familiar with this album for over 20 years. There was no re-recording done for it, everything has come from the original 24 track tapes.
I'll confess I'm not an uninterested party, in fact I was on the merch stand selling these last Saturday - they went like hot cakes by the way - but even if I weren't I'd want to have it at the earliest possible opportunity because it is just an excellent piece of product. There will also be a vinyl version available next year too.
As to the new album, the band have booked 3 months of writing sessions in the new year and the intention is not to dally about with it. Only a fool would expect to see something next year - this is IQ after all - but it certainly won't take the several years previous albums took and if it does turn up towards the back end of 2013 then we will all be the better for it.

MP3s of the original Seven Stories Into Eight album.
Did they got around to using a better source tape then the one they used on the 2nd cd of Seven Stories Into 98? Cause this sounded quite horrible. A friend of mine actually had a much better sounding copy and transferred these to cd-r.

How to get it: It will be officially released worldwide on january 21st. You can order your copy on www.gep.co.uk, via IQ´s website www.iq-hq.co.uk and there will be regular distribution (retailers and mail order). Same for the vinyl edition (500 in black, 500 in transparent vinyl) which is under quality control at the moment. I can promise that everybody will be VERY satisfied with the printed visual material, there´s a 32-page-booklet with loads of photos, memorabilia and stuff never shown before, coming from the collections of Dr. Powder himself and the very helpful Mr. Ed Sander. It includes a feature about the original recording sessions and another one about the remixing. Being part of GEP it might not wonder that I´m promoting it, but we all are VERY pleased with and proud on this product. The intention, btw, never was to do "another" collector´s item to squeeze the most out of old material - many (many) people asked for a re-recording of Tales over the years, which for the one or another reason didn´t seemed to be the right thing. In the end, it just couldn´t be better than the mix Mike made out of it now. You´ll rediscover this album, I can promise. Far better in quality than the quality of 7 Stories...

New keyboard sounds? No thanks!!
Well, it doesn't exactly say that. It says: "Martin Orford's keyboard has been given the full treatment, with a much more solid keyboard sound." To me, that means it was brought forward in the mix, or something like that. Not that they've replaced it with a NEW keyboard sound.

Indeed, I think that is exactly what has happened. Basically, they went back to the original multitracks and finally properly mixed the album in the way it should have albeit using advances in modern mixing technology as well. Furthermore, they found some extra parts on the multis that were recorded at the time but due to time constraints didn't include in the original mix. Nothing wrong with that IMHO. Mine is en route to my p.o. box and I gather I have it in my hands somewhere in the next few days. Looking forward to hearing it in full glory.

Had a listen (and a watch) to the remix and the accompanying dvd last night and I am very much impressed. The remix is quite different compared to the original (it almost relegates that one to demo-like status) while still retaining the energy / intensity of the original which of course isn't strange as it is the same performance.

But isn't it true. Just to feel the IQ-package is almost sensual. And I know many of you feel the same way. And if not with this release, just imagine you wake up, and next to your bed, a blue "Beat" and a yellow "Three Of A Perfect Pair" - equal to the "Discipline" you already have, lie on the ground. Well, wouldn't you be aroused?
I've just noticed that the Esoteric reissue of Barclay James Harvest "Eyes Of The Universe" restored the butterfly, that was imprinted (hardly visible) on the original LPs, but not on the Polydor first editions. It's that kind of detail that I wished we could chatted about more over a cup of tea. Glad there are no Tupperware "Prog" Parties. I would buy myself broke.

this sounds like an autobuy when I get enough money to buy it. The only version of this I have ever owned is my original lp. The label says The Major Record Company, kind of ironic when you think about it-lol. It is one of the original Blue border covers and my number is 733. Now then, that brings me to a question I have had for years, why were the blue covers stopped and then a brick red lp started to surface before cds became world wide popular? I have always wanted to know why they did this. https://encrypted-tbn1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcR_3-67aF3AnJNP9APY17sNG1SUHRahekxcTEBiSdw97iTjmI5XOw

Guess I can toss those two original CDs in the 'sell/trade' pile now!
I suggest you to buy from Amazon UK, cheaper and it's pretty fast to arrive in Canada. I received mine today. Listening right now. Great stuff!

Actually, I should have checked there since I bought several titles late last year and they all arrived in very good time.

Yes, but not a problem for me. :) Thanks for the warning though! I'm looking forward to getting back into these two albums with their super-duper deluxe versions. I'm a big fan but I've focused more on Ever and beyond in the last ten years or so. Occasionally I do get a hankering for that early neo UK sound though, and these albums are certainly that.

Let us know how you get on with the remastered Wake?
I'm tempted, but frankly I'm not interested in the additional cds. However, if you feel the remastered album is as impressive as the Lush Attic remaster, then I may reconsider.

My 2 cents ......
Never had the original versions of either of these albums, but I'm quite amazed at how good Lush Attic sounds. Wake is noticeably inferior though. Too bad the original multi track tapes had been lost.

These arrived today from the UK to Canada, one week after ordering. That's impressive service!
I've only just opened the package, so I'm not chiming it yet on the sound quality but wow, both Lush Attic and The Wake are beautiful sets! Major upgrades from my originals (which are now in the trade pile)... these are 'deluxe' versions indeed! I'll be diving in tomorrow after work and wading through the wealth of bonus material. Looking forward to it. :)

Yes, I actually did notice.. they call it a nice companion piece, and I'm sure I'll get that one eventually too, being that it is one of the only official releases I don't have (Living Proof is the other). I've got the place to myself tomorrow afternoon/evening - I can't wait to feast my ears on all these goodies!

Okay, I've listened to the Lush Attic remix (including the bonus tracks), as well as the entire thing over again with the commentary track, and it sounds fantastic! I'm going to check out some of the bonus mp3s now (some demos and early versions) before moving on to The Wake.
Very impressed so far. A question though: what on earth is with the animal noises every so often during the commentary?

Thoroughly enjoyed both commentaries (the one on The Wake DVD is an actual video commentary, whereas on Lush Attic it's just an mp3), and The Wake sounds great btw! Time to check out the live '84 show (not excellent quality but worth watching to see Nicholls in costume) and then dig in to this absolute mountain of bonus tracks on discs 2&3, not to mention the 2.5 hours of mp3s. Jeez!
I'll shut up about these now but to sum up: these are both excellent. Not a twinge of buyer's remorse! :cool

Yeah, so I ordered this as I knew I would end up doing. :D I'm in such an IQ phase at the moment with the arrival of these beauties, I'm basically shaking my wallet at them and calling for 'more'. My copy of the 2013 remix of Tale From The Lush Attic arrived today, very nice packaging, with full liner notes, first talking about the original recording, which was rushed to say the very least, all of the guys had comments about this. And then explaining the process of the remix itself (by Mike). Very informative.
So far I have only listened to the remix of the album, I'll get to all of the extras later, but my first impression is that the remix sounds fantastic. As anyone who is familiar with this album knows , sound quality wise it wasn't the greatest, so this I am certain is a massive improvement, I am sure of this without even having to listen to the original mix, just from what I read in the liner notes, if an album even needed a remix it was this one.
I guess because of the original poor sound quality I never really rated Tales.... as high as The Wake or anything from Ever going forward, but I have a feeling that that opinion is going to change after repeated listens to the new mix. It sounded really good to my ears.
I am also looking forward to all of the extras, there are plenty, including the original mix of Seven Stores Into Eight which I have never even heard before. Very happy that I decided to get this, and I got it for a fair price from Prog Rock UK, another plus was the super fast delivery to the USA, it came in a week from the time I placed the order, can't beat that.

I have to chime in here again about this remix of Tales From The Lush Attic. I took the time to listen to the original cd followed up with the 2013 remix, let me tell you all, sound quality wise it is not even close , the remix just blows the original mix out of the water, it's almost like hearing the album for the first time. And also on the new remixed cd they have added a couple of bonus tracks that sound really good, just makes the cd itself that much better.
I am guessing by the not so many opinions given so far on this new remix that not a lot of people here have heard it yet, because to my ears the difference is remarkable. I was actually a little hesitant to buy this thing , mainly because the album never really did a whole lot for me before, I have a whole new view of it now, any fan of IQ will definitely want to get this.
And I still haven't even gotten to the extras on DVD yet, , lots of music and commentary to explore still. This is a special edition that is well worth it as far as I'm concerned, as I said in my first post, besides the music the packaging is first class, in a hardcover book like case, with detailed liner notes and some nice pictures also. Yeah, I'm impressed.
Wow, this thread has been quiet for four days. Is everyone over the remix? I just checked Amazon, and a new import copy is $45. Btw, the record label is listed as Ais. Did Insideout Music drop IQ? Why wasn't this released in the U.S?

Sadly, it's very hard to get on DVD nowadays (someone offers the only copy now for 999 GBP on Amazon.co.uk) but the video really adds to the concept of the album - in fact, it is after watching this DVD that I was finally able to grasp the story and the music... I was very impressed with the whole production of the llive show.
So if you get a chance of getting the DVD version for reasonable amount of cash - grab it asap.

I listened to this last night, and thought the sound was greatly improved. I'm wondering if anyone has a similar reaction to mine, though: there's something that just doesn't sound right to me - the songs I'm used to hearing aren't the same. I know the album nearly note for note, and while the actual quality of the recording has improved, it's not better for me, it's different. Thoughts?
Jeremy Bender
03-05-2013, 05:49 PM
Can you clarify? Do you mean that the mix is different or that they used different takes of the music that was on the 1983 release as part of the first 5 tracks on disc 1? To my ears, it sounds like the exact same music but cleaned up and different balances used. Note: I haven't listened to my shitty 1983 version in years.

03-05-2013, 06:58 PM
No, it's clearly the same takes, just remixed. Things that were likely buried in the original mix now stand out, so in certain parts where I'm not expecting it, there is now guitar as the main focus, rather than keys, etc. It's just somewhat off-putting that there are things that sound 'new' to me.
bobert
03-05-2013, 07:05 PM
I also have to say that I don't hear anything that stands out as being different to me. I think the sound quality and mix are vastly improved, but say that the songs themselves sound different, not me. But hey, we all hear things the way we hear them.
Also when you listen to the interview you can see that the band was not at all happy with Tales.... when it was originally released, it was a very rushed process . They, IQ, are very happy with this remix, and as far as I'm concerned that tells it all for me.
Jeremy Bender

It's just somewhat off-putting that there are things that sound 'new' to me. Oh, I know what you mean. When I heard the remaster of The Who's Quadrophenia (an album I knew backwards and forwards), I was surprised at how different the brass sounded during The Real Me. Looking at the credits, there it was: remixed by Jon Astley. Boo!
They, IQ, are very happy with this remix, and as far as I'm concerned that tells it all for me. Sure. As a result of hearing the remix, I've been on a bit of an IQ retrospective (excluding the non-Peter Nicholls years, of course!) and while nothing they've done since The Wake quite reaches the same heights for me, I've really been enjoying Subterranea and Dark Matter especially.
I wish they'd come to the US again, but unless there's a Marillion-esque tour fund drive, not very likely.

There's a lot more to this release than simply 'the same album' though. This one is worth the price IMO, especially going so cheaply at the moment.
