Can anyone recommend me some good demo discs for my new sound system?

You guys take too long to respond. I found this (http://www.opus3artists.com/artists/the-planets-an-hd-odyssey) while I was waiting, sounds promising.

Morricone Conducts Morricone

You only want Classical?

Do you have SACD or DVD-Audio capability?
If not, the list is considerably shorter.

I hope this thread doesnt die...I was actually going to ask the same question. I DEFINITELY have my eye's on both the Holst thing and the Morricone disc...in fact I've been on a major Morricone binge for about 3 months now. When he's not sinking into a sentimental morass (he does occasionally, "Once Upon a Time in America" comes to mind"), he's nothing short of brilliant. In my opinion, the more low budget the film is, the better the soundtrack is. Some of those obscure Italian films that he scored, the soundtracks are bloody wonderful!

If anyone has any knowledge of what sounds good in the classical world (and I know that is a massive field) in 5:1...please share. I would be open to any suggestions, from the early to the modern, from the romantic to the most out there avant garde stuff...open season for me.

Thanks in advance!

best
Michael

While not 5.1, the Telarc Atlanta Symphony Orchestra digital recording of Stravinsky's Firebird is absolute spectacular. There are very few recordings I have ever heard that approach the dynamic range of this one.

I'd go for some 20th century opera. Berg, Debussy, Bartok. Unless you'd rather stare at an orchestra for 2 hours.
