Anyone have a favorite prog song that just stays with you forever and ever? Something that moves you into another world, or perhaps a favorite that's endured the ravages of time? I've struggled with a definite favorite There are several serious runners up, but here's my choice: "And You and I" from "Yessongs". I'd love to know what has settled into someone else's soul.

From this year only, Big Big Train's "Hedgerow" and Rush's "The Garden" will be joining the list.

Progman75: PF "Dogs" is truly exceptional. It was among my runners up, along with the title tune of KC's "In the Wake of Poseidon". Italprogrules: I haven't heard of Big Big Train, so I'm going to youtube them now. I'm afraid I'm a geezer who thought prog died in the 70's. My first prog LP may have been ELP's first when I was 14. I've only recently been happily re-informed, and most of the new stuff is outstanding and thrilling.

I suppose I should yield to the obvious, because of my user name, but I'm gonna go with Watcher Of The Skies only because it was the first Genesis song and the first "prog" song that made an impression on me.

Wow, it's so impossible to come up with one song I would consider the best. If I went with the song that I played portions of most in my head over the years its probably either 'Dancing with the Moonlit Knight" or "Starless." Both would definitely make a top ten list of my favorite prog songs, but I hesitate to say that either would be No. 1.

It's a great tune but even better in context of the album, since it reprises the earlier "Uncle Jack." But it's great on its own too. That chorus just kills me, I cannot remain silent, I have to sing along! "That is where you will find me, out there, waiting O hedgerooooow!"

Enjoy! :)

I realize that one song is a tough call, but one song can pleasantly haunt a person forever. Since Yessongs' "And You and I" earned me more warnings from apartment managers and makes me tingle to this day, I chose it.

"The Gates of Delirium." Such an epic journey. Some of Yes' most intense and most beautiful music in one piece. I love Jon's naive hippie idealism -- it captures the spirit of that era so well. But the ending notes, when everything finally comes to a resolution, still give me all-over body chills, even after hundreds of listens. It's the only song that's moved me to tears at a concert (on the Masterworks tour). It transports me to another place.

Moraz and Howe entered some kind of magical, mystical place there. That section leading into "Soon" plus "Soon" itself give me the chills as well. Hell, I was moved almost to tears just watching them do it on Yes Symphonic. Rarely does any band approach that kind of magic. One for the ages. :)

Indeed. Pretty much a perfect composition in every regard. Most definitely in my top 5 all time.

I'm really heartened to see so many votes for Yes compositions in this thread. Just goes to show why Yes continues to get talked about so much here, even to the consternation of those who say we have too many Yes threads, and despite all the silly drama surrounding the lead-singer role over the past several years. Through it all, the music endures. In my opinion, they did this "prog" thing better than anyone else ever has. I imagine they'll always be my favorite band.

Un bon choix!

Pollen are an interesting group, but I assume that, as they did not not release much anyway, they did not record anything in English? I'm also guessing that not recording in a universal language meant their demise.

Wow, that came across as...a bit patronizing. Et la Maison de la Francophonie serait en désaccord avec vous, que le français n'est pas une langue internationale. (though they rather lost the battle on that one. Oops! They’d probably consider Pollen’s très Canadien version of French an abomination, anyway.)

I'm going to cheat and take a live medley: In the Cage/Cinema Show/Afterglow (my favorite being the one from the Mamma Tour that also included In that Queit Earth and the usual bits from the Lamb). I always get lost in that medley, no matter what form it takes.

Arguably this one:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2718-shmJY

When I first heard this, I was in my early 20s and honestly figured I'd heard just about everything worth hearing in "rock music". "Progressive" had never surpassed KC's "Fracture" until that point; these were both paradigmatic works in shaping my notion of what was altogether possible with a small, basically non-classical ensemble. And both made me think fundamentally different about everything I knew in (rock) music previously. "Fracture" opened all doors, but "Ruins" laid the whole fucking house to the ground (no pun).

But Marillion's "The Great Escape", along with "Close to the Edge" and "Suppers Ready" are probably the ones i would give it to.

Depends on the day. But alternating between:

Cinema Show
One For The Vine

and maybe:

Blade (Banks)
River of Life (or, appena po - PFM)
Mumps (Hatfield & The North)
The Nile for a While (Mr. Sirius)
Islands (KC)
Paradise Found (Ant Phillips)

and several Yes, Gentle Giant and Genesis songs

Does Thick As A Brick count as a single song?

I think it would be considered a single song whereas I'm not too sure about Suppers Ready.

However having said that I would pick either as a major favourite.

One that popped into my head just now is Lady Fantasy by Camel.

Over all though I would have to say "Gates of Delirium" by YES. Not sure I really need to say the name of the band but what the heck there might be someone on here who doesn't know that awesome epic.

Beautiful track, although I must say Harmonium has never been my favourite prog - Quebecois or otherwise. Like I said though, this is a lovely piece. Doesn't reach the heights of the Hammill track I mentioned though, or "Starless" either...

Don't think I can pick just one from the old days. Either 'Cinema Show', 'One For The Vine' or 'Firth of Fifth', just edging out a whole lot of other greatness.

But in 2004, I heard Brian Wilson's 'Smile', and the section 'Wonderful', 'Song For Children', and especially 'Child Is The Father of the Man' had me in tears, in fact I think I was shaking. I'd never heard so much emotion in a piece of music before. And so well done. To this day, 'Child...' is possibly my all time favorite song on one level, where the 3 Genesis pieces are on another.

Of recent compositions, I really like 'Ramblin Sailor' (Advent) and 'If The Sun' (Glass Hammer)-esp. the beautiful middle section.

Three that are very close together for me. Close To The Edge (studio version, Symphonic Live, and Yessongs are all great), as well as The Gates of Delirium (Symphonic Live version) and the studio version of Supper's Ready. All three of these epics are top tier, well above anything else in Prog.

Where it all began for me: Firth of Fifth (and then actually the live-version on the 12'' (remember those, Americans used to call this long-plays, or what was it?) of the single 'That's All'.

Actually, if I'm totally honest, it really began with 'Selva' from The Single Factor, used as a closing theme for a radioprogram I used to listen as a teenager. Going back even more, as a child the things I loved the most were the most bombastic stuff. I adored Roger Glover & Friends 'Love Is All', the one with the cartoon (hence the appeal for a 5-year-old). That was a huge hit in these dutch mountains. That, and 'Music' by John Miles.
