Korrekt...& neither did the general public [who they were aimed at] cos they bombed. So they got a double whammy from both prog fans & the public. To my knowledge none of those songs are regarded as great or even decent by the majority of the prog fraternity excluding fan boys. Most dishonourable IMO!!!!!:lol

I'll also give an honourable to mention to Genesis for Carpet Crawlers as IMO it has both commercial & prog credidibility. Also to some of King Crimson's 80's single releases!!

Magma had a 7" release that had a track that was based off the last section of Rïah Sahïltaahk. Likewise, I recall Jannick Top had a single or two that was really good, I think one of them was called Mekanik Machine.

Yes, they did, there was a CD they came out in the late 90's, I think, that had most of the 7" releases on them. Unfortunately, I never got around to getting it, and I believe it's not out of print.

Checking a couple websites, I think the track I wat hinking of, that was based off the coda of Rïah Sahïltaahk is either Tendei Kobah or Klaus Kombalad, but for some reason, I'm really thinking it's the latter.

As for those Jannick Top singles, I had to look up to the Soleil D'Ork CD, because I can't find my copy. There were indeed two singles, one was Epithecantropus/Viva Utopia, and the other was Les Musiques Des Spheres/Mekanik Machine.

Steve Hillage: Getting Better (Lennon/McCartney)...B side: Palm Trees (Love guitar)

Emerson, Lake & Powell: Touch and Go...B side: Learning to Fly

Genesis: IN too Deep...B side: I'd Rather be You

YES: Owner of a lonely heart...B side: Our song

...and the winner for the worst Prog-related...…

Phil Collins: From the movie: Buster: A groovy kind of love...B side: Big Noise

I used to have that one in the pic sleeve. Lost it when moving house in 1984. I still wake up regretting that!

But the single of ITCOTCK did survive the move. I'm not surprised it never charted as the song is spread over both sides. Not exactly juke box friendly ...

The Magma singles collection is called Simples, and unfortunately, it's only 5 tracks, clocking in at around 20 minutes. I know there were more Magma singles than that, but I imagine the others are just excerpts from the album tracks.

"I Know What I Like" didn't bomb as far as I know and I like it. A great but weird little pop song with a good bassline.

"Your Own Special Way" isn't that special, I agree, but at least the single-edit is better than the long album version since they cut the totally superfluous "proggy" middle section.

My favourites:

Yes: Roundabout
Yes: America
-I love the long versions but these single-edits have a certain charm and it's a pity that the short and concise version of "Roundabout" hasn't been released on a Yes compilation as far as I know

Pekka Pohjola: Imppu's Tango
-Again it's heavily edited (loses the whole middle section) but it got tons of airplay here in Finland back in 1982 and I recall hearing it a lot when I was about 7 years old thinking "what a weird tune". :)

UK: In The Dead Of Night
-Edits make it very urgent and paranoid and hey, they even left some of the Holdsworth's solo in there! An ending is thrown in from "Reprise" section.

I had the understanding it was a hit in the UK, which is why it's typically been one of the more frequently played songs of the Gabriel era ever since.

Yep, and you were right when you suspected it was Klaus Kombalad.

Another Magma single was "Flöë Ëssi / Ëktah" but I am not sure whether it counts as it was originally released in 1998 only on CD but reissued a couple of years ago as a 7". It is notable as being the first Magma release following their hiatus after Merci. The CD version was one of the most expensive records I've ebought on a cost to minutes of music basis but it's great.

Curved Air had a modest UK hit with Back Street Luv with Everdance on the B-Side. Also wasn't 'Fanfare for the Common Man' quite a biggie for ELP?

The B-side is “Silent Decade” (included as a bonus on my Urban Tango CD), which seems to be a collaboration with a couple of guys from Broadcast.

Top 5 is a little more than merely “modest.” A bigger hit than “I Know What I Like,” mentioned up-thread.

I own this. It’s such a weird single. I guess Chrysalis demanded that they had to release something in single form from this, but I can’t imagine any radio station ever playing this. “Bungle in the Jungle” it ain’t.

Thought of another one I own: “Once on a Windy Day” / “Fugue in D Minor” by Gracious.

.

I thought as much. Somewhere around here, I have a cassette someone gave me back int he early 90's, which had a one hour Magma show from something like '72 (Metz, I think), and he tacked a bunch of the Magma and Jannick Top singles on it (with the cassette side running out during Mekanik Machine, I think), and I remembered the title Klaus Kombalad from that tape, so that's where my guess came from.

Gentle Giant - The Power and the Glory / Playing the Game

I have some of these. A great fanboy moment was at an Ethelfest. I hoped that Gary Green would be there and I brought two copies... and he was. During the evening I brought them up to Gary, asked if he could sign one. He'd never seen the single. He pulled one out of the paper sleeve, slowly and carefully examined both sides. He signed one for me, I gave him the other copy and he immediately took it out to his car so it wouldn't be harmed.

Great!😊

I really like the single. The A-side has a great funky bassline and the song is one of the few moments where Gentle Giant sounds a bit like Jethro Tull. A distant cousin of "Third Hoorah". Anderson paid back with "Songs From The Wood".

The b-side edit is interesting too as it adds that "hail!" -bit off "Proclamation" to the end IIRC. Not released on any album except for the Italian compilation "The Studio Gentle Giant Vol 2" which also includes the 7" edit of "In A Glass House" and an edited "Proclamation" too (maybe that was a promo single somewhere?).

There’s even a 7/4 passage. And some lovely orchestrations from Andrew Powell. The Rebel album kind of felt like a dry run for the APP (Parsons produced, and Miles was a guest vocalist on many of the Project albums), replete with some nice progressive moments (see also: “You Have It All”).

I have a 12" of Mike Oldfield's Guilty. At first I couldn't tell whether to play it at 33 or 45 because both sounded good.

Without going that far in time, one of the latest by Steven Wilson called "Permanating" goes far beyond an attempt to get a hit single or chart single shot at commercialism when he introduces the song as a pop song "summarizing the Beatles are the best group of all time and Abba are the second and you are gonna disco dance!"...I think Steven Wilson did this tongue in cheek song to show his pop side.
