View Full Version : Mel Collins ruined Genesis

Sorry, I was reading another thread where someone referred to Genesis and how you-know-who ruined the band, and referred to him simply as "Collins". And for some reason, my mind defaulted to Mel Collins, rather than Mr. Miami Vice Guest Star.

Didn't Peter Hammill ruin Genesis too (or was it Steve Howe) ? :D

It was Peter Hammill, Steve Howe and Lee Harvey Oswald, working in concert on a joint covert mission at the behest of the Mafia, Fidel Castro, Nikita Khrushchev, Nicolae Ceaușescu, Enver Hoxha, Pol Pot, Ho Chi Minh, Chairman Mao, Idi Amin, Ferdinand Marcos, Elvis Presley, Kim Il-Sung, Kim Jong-Il, General Tito, Emperor Hirohito, the Shah of Iran Ernst Stavro Blofeld, Emilio Largo, Auric Goldfinger, The Master, Davros, Khan Singh, Kang, Commander Kor, Captain Koloth, Arne Darvin, Count Baltar, Mikkos Cassadine and Dirty Den Watts.

For their roles in the mission, Hammill and Howe were each given a Mercedes 600.

You mean the reverse mohawk? I seem to recall someone telling me that had to do with his interest in mime and costumes and such. I gather that was a traditional maneuver done by theater performers to aid in the use of masks and such.

Yes. Why not? Just sounded like another type of Camel to me. Different, but not better.

Well, on the live albums that Mel Collins is on, he plays all flute and other wind instruments - not Andy Latimer. IMO, Camel with wind instruments is better than Camel without wind instruments - IMO they're an important part of Camel's sound, and make the band sound better. But if you think they add nothing to the band's sound, you're of course free to have your own opinion.

Well the Camel video was interesting for sure.

BTW Genesis did exactly what it wanted to do.... Collins is a great musician and the early prog work, TOTT & W&W and the pieces that stand out in their later (pop) work is all great stuff.... I, like may fans would have lovd to have had more of the progressive rock. But Genesis decided to go the way of $$$ sales. And they did well for themselves. So I do not feel betrayed or dissapointed really. Phil and the band made Millions...! However with that said.... They are all obviosly quite wealthy, and have been for some time. It would be a real testiment to them and to their loyal fans from the early days if they could just all have some fun and write a prog album with Peter Gabriel again.... and if they need session musicians to help perform it live then so be it. That would be a tour worth seeing.... I wonder if they can remember how to write like they once did.

Camel with flute I like. Are you sure it was just Mel playing flute? I saw them in 77 and Andy and Mel both played flute at the same time. I remember it well, and it was really nice! Andy played flute on the latest tour too, and many others, before and after Mel.
I really love the Pan Pipes on ' Stationary Traveller ' too. :)

I allways thought there was way too much saxophone on the early Genesis records and never liked their jazzy sound. Now I know who's responsible of this and It's good to know he has been fired. I sincerely hope Mel wil be not take part in the next Genesis reunion tour. I heard he also can play flute quite well, thus he might be a good replacement for Ian Anderson in the next Jethro Tull reincarnation. But no more saxophone in Genesis, PLEASE !!!

I didn't even know Genesis was ruined.
But the rumour of Mel ruining Joan while Phil watched are totally true.
His sister Suzanne told me herself.

Mel Collins banged Joan Collins?

Mel gets a lot of flak for writing sappy music. But, you have to admit, the holidays just aren't the same without "The Christmas Song."

A little aside : a few weeks ago was riding in the car with my 4 1/2 year old son listening to Christmas music on Sirius XM. Mel Torme comes on singing The Christmas Song and my son asks "Why is his voice so smooth?" He truly was the Velvet Fog!

Also, auto spell wants to change Torme to Torment. LOL.

I always referred to him as Mel Torment, anyway. Got that from a friend of mine.

I confess, it was me that ruined Mel Collins. I'm a bad seed, what can I say? Therefore, I'm the one who ruined Genesis, which is sort of a bit of pride, as I don't like them much at all.

YAY me!
