I've been on a classic Stones kick, specifically with regard to the string of albums from Satanic Majesties through Exile....
I think many of these have multiple releases or remasters, at this point. Any opinons on what the best ones are, especially for:
Exile on Main St.
Sticky Fingers
Beggar's Banquet

I've got Ya Ya's and Let it Bleed, so we can leave those off.....

All are quite excellent. Can't go wrong with any of them, but I'm a bit of a purist and favor the original mixes, particularly for Exile. I think the remaster is a bit to clean. I like my Stones a bit on the dirty side.

My Let It Bleed is the Abkco one with the "Digitally remastered from Original Master Recordings" in red on the bottom...

I think that series was the original CD release, actually....?
In any case, gotta agree.....gotta be a bit filthy, especially that era of the Stones (the era I love)-

I never liked the original mix on Exile. There's a lot of worship for this in alt-rock circles but then again, they think Maureen Tucker was a great drummer. I like the version from the 90s for the CD but the new vinyl is about perfect - just enough dirt to the mix but the vocals are in front instead of blurred and the bottom end has authority, instead of barely audible.

The ones that say "DSD" on them (direct stream digital), sound best to my ears. These include the 2002 Abkco releases of Satanic, Beggar's, Bleed and Ya-Ya's.

Me too. The newest ones ('09, I think?) suffered too much from loudness-wars thinking. Compressed, clipped and with too much of the dynamics squeezed out.

Did anybody go see the Stones concert at the O2 Arena last night? Been watching a few clips from the gig and I sincerely hope they release a dvd of that show.

I've been on a Stones kick way too long now! It started with the Keith b00k which led to a Jagger book that led to a Ronnie book that ended up with the Wyman book and listening to the Stones the whole way. Got to say the Wyman book nearly killed me!
