I have a busy summer ahead. So far, I have tix for Billy Joel at Citizens Bank Park, taking my daughter to see Bruno Mars, my new girlfriend loves (like, LOVES) Bruce Springsteen, so we're seeing him, she got me Yes tix for my birthday last weekend, and I'm hoping to get Queen + Adam Lambert tix this Friday.

Upcoming Phoenix events - - Taking my son to see the Portland Cello Project's "Bach, Brubeck and Beck" show this Saturday, then my oldest and youngest daughters to St Vincent next Tuesday (I'm as big a fan of Annie Clark as they are).

Considering going to Goblin on May 1 (but the Marquee Theater's an SRO venue and I might not be up to it, health-wise).

Bought the youngest daughter a Yamaha acoustic guitar for her birthday, and am taking her to see the California Guitar Trio on April 20 - hopefully that'll light a fire under her to start taking lessons...

Tool will be here on March 27, Dream Theater April 19, but both are 'been there, done that' events.

Johnny Clegg will be coming to Mesa soon but the venue only had crappy seats available, so I'm on the fence on that one.

Seriously considering Roger Hodgson on April 27 based on the PE reviews...

Brit Floyd will be coming to town - their Red Rocks concert was shown in part on the local PBS affiliate last night, but honestly I thought they paled in comparison to the performance of Aussie Pink Floyd...

From a Keneallist earlier this week:

Having done two "research mission" performances in San Diego and Los Angeles last month, the trio of Keneally-Bendian-Lunn will now apply the lessons learnt to a slate of performances in May 2014. A scant few weeks from now. We'll begin in Nashville (5/15), then move on to St. Louis, Chicago, Greenwood, Columbus, Baltimore, NYC, Long Island, Philly, Dunellen, Cambridge, Charleston, and wind up at a festival in Scottsville, KY (5/31).

Fred Frith & Evan Parker
Ken Vandermark's Audio One
Keiji Haino / Stephen O'Malley / Oren Ambarchi

May 19th - Next Music From Tokyo, Montreal

June 11th-15th - Vision Festival, Brooklyn
A whole bunch of people including Charles Gayle, Jemeel Moondoc, Peter Brotzmann, Kidd Jordan, Satoko Fujii, William Parker, Hamid Drake, Nicole Mitchell, Mary Halvorson, and many more.

June 20th-30th - Ottawa Jazz Festival
A whole bunch more people including Mike Pride's From Bacteria To Boys, Harris Eisenstadt, Jason Adasiewicz, Colin Stetson & Hamid Drake, Steve Martin, Bill Frisell, Rudresh Mahanthapaa, Flat Earth Society, Norma Winstone, Aretha Franklin, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, Bushman's Revenge, and probably many more.

Had hoped to squeeze in another road trip for Acid Mothers Temple in Toronto, but with FIMAV and Vision Festival so close together it wasn't meant to be this year. No clue for what's coming in July and beyond. Possibly return visits to the Chicago and/or Guelph Jazz Festivals but would need to see the lineups first. And Neutral Milk Hotel are coming to town in September; I'll probably go see them.

Saw the Chicago Pre-Broadway World Premiere of "The Last Ship", with music & lyrics by Sting last week. Was superb (both the music and the script). Found out while we were there that both Sting & Paul Simon were "in the house", but nary a glimpse for us.

Have tickets for 3 concerts that are all here in Madison, which is very rare. Usually Kay & I are off to Milwaukee or Chicago if there's something to lure us, but getting too old to go to everything I'd go to if I were 50, but I'm 20 years older than that:lol.

In July it's Yes, in August Steely Dan, and in September Crim. My local musician friends are even trying to reschedule/cancel booked gigs so they can spectate:lol.

July 10 - Procol Harum and Dave Mason's Traffic Jam, Ottawa Bluesfest

Things get really interesting in the fall...
I have a September trip to the UK which should be really great.
Kate Bush in London, and an interesting concert in Sept 21 with Tony Visconti, Woody Woodmansey and others performing Bowie's Man Who Sold the World at Shepherd's Bush Empire in London and Hawkwind in Exeter. If they can't get their s**t together to come here, we will go to them.
Should be a great week.
Also Nik Turner in Montreal mid Sept as well as the Strawbs in October in Montreal as well.
Lastly Steve Hackett in Gatineau Nov 30 and Adrien Belew Dec 14th also in Gatineau.

Shaping up to be a great Spring here in the Northeast, after our miserable winter, if one is willing to do some road time (and I am!)

First up-
IQ at la Tulipe in Montreal April 10. We were at this venue for Neal Morse at the end of February. It was brutally cold, Got us some M&G tix. Haven't seen the band, one of my all-time neo faves, since the second Nearfest set in what, '05? Five hour drive.

Next will be Glass Hammer and Circuline at the Bearsville Theater in Woodstock NY on April 25 iirc. Have been on board with GH since the first album ('93?), loved them at Nearfest so will make the trek west. Two hour drive through the beautiful Berkshires and then into the western Catskills. Beautiful area, first time to this venue.

Finally, Steven Wilson at the Egg in Albany, got some sweet center orch tix for the first show of the US tour. 1.5 hours, thru the Berkshires, last saw Renaissance at this beautiful venue.

Yea Spring!

Holy Cow, I live in a relatively small market and the concert variety around here announced for the summer is really pretty amazing already. Old bands, new bands, you name it they all seem to be out on the road this summer. Not a lot of prog, but still a ton of live music to choose from, and I don’t even live in a big city.

As of right now sure things are:

Primus
ROSfest
Gordon Lightfoot (Kalamazoo)
Apocolyptica (Grand Rapids)
Rush (Detroit)
Aerosmith (Grand Rapids)
Symphony X (Grand Rapids)

Other shows I am considering or waiting for tickets to go on sale:

Gary Clarke Jr. (Grand Rapids)
Yes / Toto (Detroit)
Steven Wilson (Chicago)
Umphrey’s McGee (Grand Rapids)

The Guelph Jazz Festival's indoor programming has been announced and includes:

Nicole Mitchell's Black Earth Strings + Matt Brubeck
Evan Parker & Colin Stetson
Jason Adasiewicz's Sun Rooms
Kris Davis Capricorn Climber
Thumbscrew (Mary Halvorson/Tomas Fujiwara/Michael Formanek)
Darius Jones Quartet
Colin Stetson and Sarah Neufeld
Matana Roberts
Rocket Science (Evan Parker/Peter Evans/Ikue Mori/Sam Pluta)
Bly de Blyant (with Hilmar Jensson, Shahzad Ismaily, and Ches Smith)
Marc Ribot’s Ceramic Dog
Taylor Ho Bynum Sextet

The free outdoor programming will be announced later. Some interesting changes this year for festival regulars...

(a) After being held the weekend after Labour Day for the previous 21 years, this year the festival has been moved one week later and runs September 16th-20th.
(b) The festival's founder and programming director for its entire 21 year history, Ajay Heble, is apparently gone but possibly only for this year. I was told he took a one-year sabbatical from his teaching position at the University of Guelph and I guess left the festival at the same time.
(c) Looks like all new venues for this year's festival. No concerts at the River Run Centre, Guelph Youth Music Centre, or St. George's Church. No idea what's up with that and will definitely miss the GYMC. Also, no River Run Centre means no concerts with assigned seating. Everything is general admission.

I'll be seeing Pugwash here in town at the Iron Horse in Northampton (MA) in September. My prog bud saw them last year and said they put on a great fun show. I had not even heard of them until my bud turned me onto them and the two related Duckworth Lewis Method albums (though many of the cricket references are lost on me...)

Also grabbed third row (pit) seats for Steve Hackett in Albany in early November. Love that venue (the Egg), where I've seen Renaissance and Steven Wilson.

With the Wilson show at the Beacon on 3/5/16 now a wonderful memory, setting my sights on Spring.

So far, here's what's on the schedule:

Steve Hackett-Place des Arts, Montreal, April 9. This is the beautiful theater in which we saw the first "Revisited" tour in '13 iirc; we saw the show the following year in Lynn MA and although the show itself was great, the beautiful theater in Montreal adds to the experience. (We saw last year's show in Albany at the wonderful Egg, but the Egg is no Theatre Maisonneuve).

Anderson Ponty Band-Calvin Theater, Northampton, May 21. I had been google-mapping the distance to shows in New York and had given up plans to attend when this date was announced here in my town! Got in via pre-sale, looking forward to seeing Jon whom I've not seen since the Anderson/Wakeman show in Worcester at the Hanover (another beautiful theater!) some years back (Ponty I saw with RTF not too many years back...)

Plus Stick Men and Project Object at the Iron Horse here in town in April. Shaping up to be a good spring...now if Electric Strawbs would book a local date (I'm not around for the Mohegan Sun show), I'd be a very happy man.

I'm a fan of Snarky. They're actually playing at the end of July at Dun Laoghaire Harbour in Dublin for the Beatyard festival so I might go to that.

Good gig tonight, a bit too clean and professional for me personally, good energy, placed was packed all standing at least a couple of thousand, suffered like all fusion bands live with setting up the next solo. Good night out.
