This is my first thread on the new forum (and he's already spamming! wtf? jk). Just wanted to tell you about a new album that's now on Pre-Order with Burning Shed. It's called "Chalk Lines" and the band is called Lo-Fi Resistance which is essentially Randy McStine plus an amazing line up of guest musicians. His previous album had my old bandmate from the Kevin Gilbert Thud days, Nick D'Virgilio on it. This new album has Gavin Harrison and Colin Edwin of Porcupine Tree, myself on keys and various other contributors including John Giblin of Brand X and Dug Pinnick of King's X. I co-produced the album with Randy and co-wrote some of the songs which I'm very proud of. That said, it's Randy's show and he's really incredible on every instrument as well as his singing and songwriting. I'd say it's 'prog' but it's very song-oriented... similar in how Kevin G was prog in a way. You can hear the influences from Crimson to Floyd to Genesis to Yes to all sorts of stuff from the 70's to modern alt rock. But it's all centered around well written songs. That to me is what makes all of these great players icing on the cake. It's not just a novelty that they're on there. The album would be great even if none of us did anything on it. Randy could have just done it all himself. But instead he got a deluxe line up of people to add very tasteful elements into the mix. Mark Hornsby mixed it. Mark has done some work with Nick D'Virgilio and those guys put together the "Shaming of the True" show we did earlier in the year. So it's a great group of creative people on this and since there's a FREE song download right now on Burning Shed: https://www.burningshed.com/store/freedownloads/product/184/4355/ Why not go check it out? This one, called The Silent War, has kind of a Floydy thing about it but when Gavin goes into this crazy double bass drumming thing it takes off into the stratosphere. Definitely a cool track off the album and a nice freebie.

The whole album has a very concise concept album type of feel to it and the last song is quite epic! Here in this clip you can hear me just doing the organ track live on video during the sessions at SR. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZ-LORfnG2E During the long fading organ chord at the end there's this really wicked "Frippesque" guitar thing Randy does that I absolutely love. Lots of cool sonics on the album and tons of real vintage instruments played. Here's another video take of me playing a Rhodes 88 suitcase. I love that thing! So warm and vibey. That's another great track on the album. If you could put KG, Jellyfish, Keane, Radiohead, King Crimson, Queen, PT and Floyd in a musical blender... you'd get sort of close to what this ends up being. Yet it's very fresh and new with just the right amount of classic rock/prog flavor in there. You'll have to hear for yourself and decide. If you like what you're hearing then pre-order it from Burning Shed. If you're a fan of Gavin and Colin then it's a no brainer because they're amazing on it. But even if that's not your deciding factor then check out the songs. You can also hear the title track on: http://www.lofiresistance.com/
or on the page you can pre-order the album on from Burning Shed. https://www.burningshed.com/store/altrock/product/128/4354/

Hope you like it! I loved working on it and I'll be joining Randy up in NY for his official CD release party soon!

Dave, I love the last Lo-Fi R album and am looking forward to the new one, especially because of the Harrison/Edwin rhythm section (which in my opinion is the best Prog Rock rhythm section since Wetton/Bruford). I'll be getting a double dose of that between this album and the new Live PT CD/DVD set.

If you love the first Lo-Fi Resistance album then I think there's a seriously good chance you'll love this one even more. Besides the great rhythm section I think Randy's writing is more refined. The whole album has well-crafted songwriting at its core. On Burning Shed they categorized it as "Alt Rock" but it's heavily prog-infused Alt Rock which I happen to like a lot. Certain bands like Muse, Keane, Radiohead etc. hint at that here and there. But it's nice when a band has a catchy song but then does some unexpected twists and turns or gets moody and atmospheric... then of course the art of the "album" is nice to carry the torch of. This is the kind of album that's a really good all the way through listen. A great headphones album as well. The final song called "Face Another Day" revisits previous moments on the album and that wailing "Dark Sidish" Hammond thing I'm doing in the first video there is part of a really HUGE sounding climactic moment. I'm really happy with how the album came out. It's worthy of people's time if they're looking for something with substance and memorable melodies, riffs and cool muso/sonic parts. There are certain tunes were Gavin just goes OFF in a big way. He's incredible. Colin is too and I'm actually working with him now on something else. Really great guy. Hopefully we'll all get to play this live somewhere at some point.

How patient of you! :D

Honestly, as an artist I wish that I could reveal very little (you know, like the old days), but you almost have to give away the farm to try to get some people interested. Sometimes that isn't enough either.

I'm really glad to see a few people who liked the first record. I like to say very little about things, but if you like the more cinematic elements of the first album (Embrace, Too Simple, Wasted), I think you're going to really, really dig this one.

Thanks for the support guys!

-Randy

Just listened to the download - it pretty much pushed all of my buttons: good vocals, nice work on the keys, dynamics, rocks out in places, and a little guitar crunch for an edge. I'll be ordering.

I recorded a bulk of the guitars with John Wesley (PT touring guitarist/vocalist). Tons of fun, just the two of us in a sea of guitars, amps, pedals, etc! Here are a few videos from those sessions:

If you want to know how I got involved with it I tell the story on my blog. I think it's cool that I found out about the project on Progressive Ears! I found about PE because of Sean. So it's all because of Sean. ;)

This is true. I haven't met or talked to Sean personally, but thanks! :)

I posted something on PE about Lo-Fi Resistance probably about this time last year for my Kickstarter campaign. To watch the video now is funny for me as I had just gotten John Giblin on the title track, and Gavin had done only 2 or 3 songs. Between then and now, Gavin ended being the drummer for all of it, Colin Edwin and Dug Pinnick got on board, etc. Working with Dave Kerzner and John Wesley were both situations where they started the conversation of getting involved. Dave through PE, and Wes after a SW show. I introduced myself to Wes and he says, "wait, I know who you are." "...You do!?"-me. :)

Nice track! Sounds more than damned good...sounds like an auto-buy :) Seriously though, there's some lovely work on the song; nice keys, great guitar, and a rhythm section that's killer. What else could I ask for? Great stuff!

With one week left for pre-order, Burning Shed is throwing an exclusive 20 minute EP of previously unreleased material into the mix. https://www.burningshed.com/store/label/product/138/4354/

Lo-Fi Resistance was also featured on a show last night called Friday Night Progressive (www.fridaynightprogressive.com) alongside some other interesting artists.

I have listened to this since xmas and gotta say that it is a great album. easily in my top 10 of 2012. I hate to rate 1-10 because each one of them might be #1 on a particular day. Congrats to Mr. McStine, Mr. Kerzner, Mr. Dearth, Mr. Giblin and PT friends. Very enjoyable. Of course the common influences are seamlessly melded into their own personality. Hard not
to notice Gavin's presence! I hear (or maybe I want to think I hear) some moments that are very Alice In Chains sounding, some vocals very much like some Cairo and of course some
NDV influence. They all push the right buttons for me.
