I wish I could put my finger on it. I have been compelled to visit here daily since the days we were on Yahoo, it is a constant in my life, and believe me my life has been through some topsy turvy times this past few years. Of course a love of prog is the heart of it, but I love other music dearly too, but have never sought a forum to shoot the breeze with like minded folk around the world. There is something special here which should be preserved in aspic, along with those larks tongues.

Sean

I hope it's the spirit of sharing at the heart of it. That's really the motivation, to share what we love with others that may love it too. Not sure how many sites have such a simple goal, maybe that sets us apart?

Sean, yes I would. There have been times I have not really wanted to post, but have always lurked and read. I'm not one for sharing problems with the world, but it was good to see my virtual pals enthusing about music and the tangential interests that divert us so. Anyway that's all behind me now, it was a few years ago now that I hit my marriage break up which was hard to take after 20 plus years together, but my kids and I are unscathed, our relationship is better than ever, and out of the dust I have walked into a new love that has so knocked me off my feet... she doesn't understand prog though, and I just can't define it for her. Possible thread title "what is prog." well it has been a while since we did it!

hmm whats the appeal? well for me its the rare possibility of flirting and conversing with the prog babes i've heard so much about from other online.

Forget it . They don't exist. It's just a myth. ;)

The appeal for me is that this site is always buzzing with activity, and it's well moderated. Too many sites are micro-managed to the point of sucking all the life out of it. Most people here are intelligent and can talk about all sorts of things besides prog. I'm currently going through a rough patch myself (sick mother with dementia) so I come here to escape a little.

And I agree with all you've said about PE's appeal.

It's smells a little funny in here, but Prog Ears is a pretty cool place to hang out. The music I have discovered here in the past 10 years has blown my mind! For the most part, the people are good here. I appreciate the friendships I have made in the Prog community. You guys were there for me during some rough patches, and I've certainly had my share of those these past few years! Better times are ahead now.

It was up over 3,000 yesterday. But I wouldn't put too much stock into the main page stats for few reasons (and I'm just guessing a bit here):

1) A lot of people just put PE up all day and go away, but it still lists you as logged in or viewing.

2) There are all kinds of anomalies that could attribute to why there are so many 'guests'.

3) If you examine how many times threads get read, it doesn't add up to what purports to be the overall viewership. And while there are over 1,000 registered participants at this point, history shows that the vast majority of the posting at PE is from about the same 100-200 people. The rest are lurkers and/or casual/selective participants.

Yeah, I was wondering about that too... Though the top viewed thread (best 2012 album) has 4000 views.

People going back to the same thread again and again push up those views.

I doubt that. It's probably just one of the more popular ones at the moment since it's so general.

I'll check on this.

I think that if you clicked "Remember Me" when logging in - the system thinks you're still online, even though you may have actually left the site.

Rarebird
11-16-2012, 01:36 PM
More than 5,000 visitors at this moment? There must be something wrong.

Duncan Glenday
11-16-2012, 02:31 PM
As described somewhere else:

Here's what happens:

Those counts are for members who are 'logged in'.

If you click the "remember me" button when you log in, then it keeps you logged in for a lot longer than the system's default 15 minutes. (I've set it to a VERY long time, so that we don't have to keep logging in again and again.)

This means that - by your choice - you remain 'logged in' even after you leave the site.

And that means that as a 'logged-in user', you are included in the count of 'logged-in' users.

The counts would be a lot more realistic if I were to reset that parameter to 15 minutes. Then it would only counts people who are logged in at present, and in the last 15 mins. But then ... you'd be re-entering your user-ID and password again and again...

Rarebird

As described somewhere else:

I still can't figure it out. Even if the members stay logged in, the amount of non-members viewing this site is raising as well.

Ive been here since way back in 2001 or so--long before we had the labels but we did have the band management side of things.

Ive always found it a fantastic community--terribly addictive too! Some lovely people, some real odd balls who come and go, and a very wide range of views on the new and old-both music and technology etc. being in the business I find this really useful. It helps me know what actual customers and gig goers think and want etc and what annoys them. More than anything though, working on my own a lot of the time, I find it one of lifes "constants" and I like that. I always feel I could ask for advice ---when we had the issue with our previous label I had so many supportive emails, it was better than any medication.
