There have been several postings about "all of that smoking on the recent Cruise to the Edge. I didn't see too much.
Question: 42% of Americans have tried pot and about 10% use it regularly. What are the percentages in the prog community?

I smoke it in small quantities fairly regularly, but always in the evenings when I am home from work. It tends to make me pretty tired, and I use sharp equipment at work, so... bad idea to do it earlier in the day. I find it an enjoyable activity at home while I am listening to music and/or playing on the computer.

Seriously, until I retired in 2009, while my quantities were more than likely greater than Progatron's, I also only did it when I wasn't working or needing to go to work in the next 8-10 hours. My job required not only complex calculations and responses to clients, but also both counseling one-on-one and driving all over the state speaking to groups.
When I retired at the end of '09, I began to make up for lost time since I was then a man of leisure. That hasn't abated much as of nowX):).

Like most "rock" publics, the percentage of ganja-ers (let's not go into hard drugs) is more important than in other society groups, because Mary Jane has its most obvious effects on our aural system...
I'm going back this afternnon at the Prog-Resiste Convention (outstanding Anglagard concert last night), but yesterday, tokers were discreet in their smoking, but the eyes let you know who was on and not...
Even one of the organizer gave me a space cake.... too light to have an other effect than just a good mood...

The company I work for does random drug testing (THC can stay in your body up to 30 days), so I rarely smoke anymore except once in a while if I am around people at a festival or something. Being an introvert I always liked alcohol better than pot anyway. Pot just makes me more introverted.

Never tried it, and have no plans to. I think I'm in a small minority.
Got nothing against it -- and in fact I voted in favor of the ballot proposal here in Washington to legalize it -- but I figure that with my anxiety/panic disorder, it would be just my luck that weed would throw me into a panic attack. Also, my biological mother was a hardcore substance abuser, and I'm OCD. If it didn't throw me into a panic attack, I'd probably like the stuff just a little too much and wouldn't know when to stop.
Yay, me.
Funny thing is, with my long hair, my proclivity for tie-dye, and my musical tastes, most people just assume I'm a smoker. :lol

A clarification from me....
I've been toking almost every day (save for one year where I had to test) for 50 years! As a result, I've built up a tolerance so great that I don't use the words "stoned" or "high" anymore. It simply relaxes me and is a very benign anti-depressant. On the road in a band from 1969-1973, my drug debauchery went way past weed, but I haven't done ANY other non-prescription drug for 25 years.
Anyone wishing to corroborate my self-assessment of my weed tolerance, please ask either Luis N. or Dalegtr:D.

Christ the amount of weed i've smoked over the years is staggering. However I've had a few hiatus' and the current one is a good 3+ years. Only because of job/job searching. I can't wait till it's legal here. I soooo prefer it to alcohol. I don't drink like I used to. Doc warned me to stop, although I haven't been that bad in some time, but the liver ain't what it used to be.
I'm just so pissed that weed isn't legal. All I want anymore is just a few tokes to mellow out and enjoy some music. Boy, what a threat to society I am!

But my chronic days are long gone...tried it a while back, after a hiatus of more than a decade, and woof! The stuff they're breeding these days is obscene. Gave me heart palpitations--no fun at all, for a couple hours, though I gotta agree that the "aural" benefits are always very great.

I may have mentioned this before, but I've developed what's been diagnosed as a seizure disorder fairly recently. But the only thing that brings on my seizures is if I mix alchohol and weed. So I can't do both anymore, I have to choose one or the other. It's odd, because I used to mix the two all the time. I always had a tendency to get introverted when I smoked and alchohol took that edge off. Not that it was ever a great idea; I'm basically a blithering idiot when I try to carry on a conversation high and the alchohol made me not care about that. Nowadays, I just drink in a social situation and smoking is reserved for listening to music, watching movies or having sex. And I stopped drinking in excess a long time ago; a couple of glasses of wine or vodka is all I need. I just don't enjoy getting stupid drunk anymore.
I'm glad marijuana laws are loosening up finally. Sure took a long time!

Actually, I should clarify. It calms me down, but I talk a bit more, as well. So, yes, it's a bit of a pick-up, but my point was that it's no worse than drinking a beer or two. in fact, it's better.

In 1967, my mother's doctor, who had just told me about her recurrence of breast cancer, asked me, "Do you have access to pot, because I think that would be these best thing to relax her and help her to eat". The doc convinced my mom to try it (previously she had been the quintessential Jewish mother, with "Oy vey, you're still smoking that dreck (Yiddish for "shit)". My friends and then-wife and I would go over there at least 2-3 times weekly for pot/pizza parties, and my mother was a laugh riot who all my friends enjoyed. She had about 7-8 months of that before she needed morphine instead of pot (I would leave her joints to smoke when we weren't there).
Obviously her doc was slightly ahead of his time.:)
As for Ron's comment about evil weed puritans, he's quite right.

Interesting………for me it is the exact opposite. I tend to be much less social when I toke. That is why I never liked it that much at concerts as it tended to mellow me out too much, and I don’t really like being mellow at rock concerts. I’ve always preferred a good beer buzz at live shows which tends to act more as a stimulant for me than it does many people.

I smoked the stuff nearly everyday from the age of 15 until I was 25 or so, and I'm almost 55 now. On the rare occasion that it might present itself, I may choose to partake, but I don't ever go in search of it anymore. And as mentioned before, it's a lot more potent these days. Now, I'm just an old guy that has a coupla brewskis after work. I understand the potential health benefits and while I agree that it should be legal for these purposes, I'm still not convinced that we need to provide another means for people to kill other people on the roads, and don't tell me that it won't happen, because it will, and it does.

At any rate, with alchohol and cell phones being legal, there's no reason for pot to be illegal.

I totally agree that pot smoking and driving is as dangerous as drinking and driving - or close. However, there is no evidence that legalizing or decriminalizing pot will increase the prevalence of drug use. Countries like Holland shows that removing sanctions for pot smoking leads to more moderated patterns of use. You're no longer hiding soft drug use in the shadows, it become legitimized and therefore people use at more moderate levels. Treating drug users like criminals has led to rates of incarceration in the U.S. that are only matched by non-democratic nations. There is a need to liberalize drug policies well beyond pot smoking but that's another debate. What happens when you take pot smoking outside of the criminal justice system and into the health care system? - far more humanistic and more highly effective outcomes. Lifetime criminal records for pot smoking is an impediment to gainful employment and integration into regular society. You can still prosecute violent crimes linked to pot but most folks smoking a joint never make it out the door of their houses, they're too busy eating pizza and sugar and staring at the wallpaper!!!

Last summer I was visiting my parents, and took my father (85) to his doctor. His doctor is a really young guy, (I said that?, boy, I must really be getting old!) I think he's pretty cool, and my dad likes him. Just a check-up to adjust his heart-attack meds. My father was generally complaining about being depressed, sore, no appetite, etc, the usual 'old man' stuff. (Hey, I'm getting there too). So as a goof, I tell the doctor 'Why don't you prescribe him some of that medical marijuana I keep hearing about?" (It's illegal in New York) His reaction was funny ! He tries to answer, but only stammers out a few odd sounds " I....uh...there...but" ! He had so much to say about it, but couldn't get it out ! I smiled and winked, we know the whole routine, the perfect 'drug' needed was illegal etc. He finally manages to get out "Well, uh, maybe if you go down to the park..." Too bad it's illegal there, my father is still an old-time, hard-ass, anti-drug, hippie hating you-know-what. A little X) would probably straighten his ass out !! :D

no pride nails it- sex, movies, music. can't beat it.
the best part about watching a movie stoned is that when you happen to watch it again years later it's like your watching it for the first time again. lol

And the best part about listening to music stoned is that something you've listened to for decades can sound fresh. :)

Not sure what you're trying to say. And maybe that's because you aren't sure what I was trying to say either? I was just making a joke. I don't care too much about watching movies under the influence because it becomes (quite literally) wasted time for me. If I'm going to stand up at the end of an hour or two and say "what just happened?" I'd rather it was due to a musical experience. :) If I mention to a coworker that I watched such-and-such a movie the night before and he says "yeah, I loved the part where blah blah blah" I feel stupid going "sorry, I don't remember that extremely important plot element"....if I say I was listening to an album no one is going to say "love the little instrumental interlude at the 18:39 mark"... :)

I have a very good friend who is very ill with cancer. Weed has SAVED HIS LIFE. Without it, he would not be able to eat.
So, to all those puritans out there who think it's only evil, you can go fuck yourselves, because YOU DON'T KNOW.
That's the first time I've heard of a dopesmoker getting antagonistic. try some slow deep breathing, man. :cool I'd use if I knew where to get it, but I have no idea. As for Joni Mitchell, hey, give her some respect, man! ;)

The antagonism (which wasn't directed at you) targets the ignorance of those militantly against it for reasons based in their fantasy world.
Where did I disrespect Joni?

yeah, I understood that. I was just amused by your comment because I associate mj with people being laidback and/or laughing at stuff; you kinda sounded ready for a fight. that's all. no big deal.
as for Joni, I was having a little fun based on her remark - just after the 4:10 mark.

Isle of Wight festival 1970 was catastrope, but Joni handled it allright. One of my favorite, despite all the riot there was great music heard and some very first time.Btw that clip is censured,it don't show how it went for Joni.

[QUOTE=No Pride;94072]It's a small minority of accidents that happen because somebody was driving under the speed limit. ;)
Research at NORML from California suggests that persons who are stoned and drunk are better drivers than those that are drunk only. Why? Because the stoner drives slower. I know that this won't impress too many, but it's true. Don't you feel better?

Jim had been awake for nearly 72 hours & insisted on dim lighting. He mostly just stood there and sang. If that's 'a bit off' and/or 'lackluster' then yeah, not an energetic show. I still like to hear it. Jim was articulate & witty the next day.
