Animals Re Imagined, Pink Floyd tribute album.

I know many are not really fans of such tribute albums. I check them out occasionally, and for me it largely depends on the roster of artists.

Here we have James Labrie, Martin Barre, Patrick Moraz and Rick Wakeman among others.

It's probably my fave Floyd album actually. And normally I have no issue with artists covering other material, and in fact prefer that they don't do a note for note cover, but mess with it a little bit.

But with iconic albums like this I prefer if they don't mess with it too much, but still put their own stamp on it...and not too much 'look Ma, no hands' type of noodling.

I am just listening to Dogs at the moment, sounds pretty good so far.

Anyone else heard this yet?

These sorts of tributes are fine but they always underline why the original is perfect the way it is. For my part, the only cover version of a song that's better than the original is Nirvana's live version of "The Man Who Sold The World."

I own a copy of Endless Highway: Tribute to The Band and while there are exceptional (if not superior) covers like: Death Cab For Cutie-Rockin Chair, Guster-Wheel's On Fire, Wallflowers-Whisperin Pines, the rest pretty much do just as you described.

It's not something I take lightly. I know we had another thread where the topic of perfect albums came up and people started posting long lists of great ones, but not perfect ones. Most of my favorites are imperfect. My favorite PF album is Meddle. My favorite album of all time is Sgt. Pepper. Yet, neither are perfect, IMNSHO. I don't even consider DSotM to be perfect, as truly great as it is.

I listened today while working with another guy. I really enjoyed Dogs and Pigs but thoght Sheep was weak in comparison. My coworker thought Sheep was the best of the 3. I liked it enough to listen again.

Today, Pigs was going through my head (as it often does!), and I kind of regretted having listened to this cover version of Animals. It's not that the album is terrible (it isn't), but I felt like I had "used up" a listen to Floyd's album, because now I'll probably wait a while before listening to it so as not to overlisten. Not that I'm religious about that or anything, but I'll just be "satisfied" for now, but not as much as I'd be if I'd listened to the real thing.

Yet, now nycsteve has me thinking I may listen to it a second time... I guess I like the change somewhat. A slightly different spin.

I thought that the previous release in this series, Still Wish You were Here, was very good, unlike some Cleopatra Records releases of the more distant past, so I've ordered Animals Reimagined. (It's not because I obsessively buy all albums with members of Yes appearing on them... honest...)

I have enjoyed the reggae version Dub Side Of The Moon by the Easy Star All Stars, it works surprisingly well. I saw them play it live once too at Glastonbury in the sun, a very relaxing afternoon.
