Wow, sad news indeed, this one hits hard. He was and remains one of the true originals of the progressive era. Lucky to have seen him.

Major sadness... The early Soft Machine has sure not been blessed with member longevity. RIP Elton Hugh and Kevin. :(

Oh man that sucks...such a drag. Truly a man who marched to his own drum. Cheers mate, bon voyage.

This is horrible. He was legendary - the man behind "We Did it Again"!

I still love his work on the first Soft Machine and several of his solo albums. Now three of the main dudes from the following classic recording are gone: Lol Coxhill (sax), David Bedford (keys) and Kevin. Mike Oldfield plays bass here and is sticking to us for now, I hope.

WOW. Terribly sad. Kevin was one of the first real cool artists I ever got in to. I feel lucky that I got to see him do a solo show in 1993. Man, this has been such a bad stretch. I just can't believe just how many of my early music heros are departing. RIP Kevin, you were a unique talent, with a wonderfully unique vocal style.

Ach, sad news.

I always felt Kevin had more to give, and for a time there it seemed he was poised to get more active.

Another great one gone. RIP.

I met him briefly in Seattle in 2002. He was in town for the Progman Cometh festival. He was sitting in a little cafe near the theatre having breakfast, when I walked past and said "Oh, good morning Mr. Ayers." He about choked on his fried egg. I don't think he gets recognized often.

Saw him on Sunday night of Progman Cometh. It was only a small taste of getting to experience his unique style before the next door hotel kicked us all out. I would have loved to have had a chat with him as others such as Richard Sinclair, Daevid Allen, and Hugh Hopper made themselves available for.

This video cracks me up every time I watch it. Kevin really had some, er, cajones to make something like this back in 1973!

I know nothing more than you do. The Guardian obit states he was "found dead" so it seems no one else was present. There had been word that he was seriously ill for a couple of years. I had visited Kevin at the same place he died at back in 2000, and had last met him in 2008.

A real drag. Ayers embodied the spirit that animated a generational music; he was us, we were him. I ws lucky to see him with the Soft Machine in '68 when they opened for Hendrix. I haven't followed him since Dr. Dream and June 1, 1974, but this loss resonates in a way others haven't.

RIP .... Hope For Happiness

I haven't read the news or a couple of days and am so sad to check in here and read this. I loved his music, voice and vision, the world is sadder today for sure. Now for some Joy Of A Toy, a go to put a smile on my face album, but then they all do. RIP Kevin.
