View Full Version : Heliopolis -- Los Angeles Progressive Rock Band

Ah, what the hell.

Some of you might remember my old band, the now-defunct Mars Hollow (the guitarist recently moved out of state).

Out of the smoldering wreckage two new bands have emerged: Heliopolis and an as-yet-to-be-named project fronted by former MH members Steve Mauk (keyboards), Joe August (bass) and Bob Craft (drums), along with a new guitarist. I've spoken with Steve about his new venture and he's very happy and excited about what's going on. We're hoping to do some LA-area gigs together whenever they're ready...

Heliopolis is former MH drummer Jerry Beller, keyboard wizard Matt Brown (he recently played a show with Chris Squire and Taylor Hawkins), guitarist Mike Matier, lead vocalist Scott Jones, and yours drooly on bass. The music thus far is ranging from industrial-tinged instrumental mayhem to classic progressive rock to prog-tinged pop. All five of us sing and vocal harmonies will likely play a big role in the songs, although we're not planning a full-on Moon Safari-esque assault. :)

Thanks to Norcal Kurt aka Kurt Matson, we're playing our first gig with the incredible MoeTar at The Starry Plough in lovely Berkeley, California on Saturday, January 26, 2013. Details to follow soon.

Meanwhile, here's a couple of musical tidbits if anyone is curious; thanks in advance to anyone who checks this stuff out, we appreciate it most sincerely.

Hey all - Matt here.

This is the most excited I've been about being in a band in a long time. Between Heliopolis and my other project (The Jazz Butchers) it's been one hell of a year! Everyone in the band is dedicated and full of ideas.

We are having a great time writing new music and working up some of our own existing tunes to get our live set ready AND record our debut release.

ROCK....er, PROG! :)

So far, I've dug everything I've heard from Heliopolis... more that Mars Hollow, if I may be candid. And I haven't even heard anything with vocals yet! I have a feeling it's going to be all over the map... in a good way! Anxious to hear the record when it's done. Best of luck, guys!

I'd love to hear your new project anytime you're ready, and of course I'd love to book a show with both of our respective bands. I'm thinking February, 2013 for an LA-area gig.

Reviving this long-dead thread at my own peril; we've assembled an "official" website (http://heliopolislaprog.wix.com/heliopolislaprog) for Heliopolis and before anyone poo-pooh's me about using a free website creator (wix), think of it this way: should we spend what little money we have on a domain name and a website administrator, or put the money into the recording budget? Frankly, Facebook has always been the focus as far as spreading the word into the community goes but I guess it doesn't hurt to have an additional page out there.

After our Mexicali Prog gig next month with Il Castello di Atlante, we're going full-bore into recording; we're funding this out of our own pockets (why does this sound so familiar to me?) and there's a "donation" button on the way, way off chance anyone wants to help out.

Meanwhile, it's getting old sharing the same old demos LOL -- can't wait to get into the studio!

Nice Kerry. Why no Ric?

Jefferson James
04-30-2013, 12:31 PM
Dan, you're too kind, thank you man. Really blown away by the stained glass and woodwork you and your wife are doing these days -- nice!

As for the Ric, this was kind of funny; "In Your Hands" (from the first Mars Hollow album) is part of our set; just before that particular song the upper strap-pin on the Ric came out (perhaps it was a sign). I tried to put it back in but it snapped in half on me; I didn't wanna lose momentum by grabbing my back-up bass so I sat down for the MH song (it looks kind of funny in the video; I was sitting behind Matt Brown and in the vid it looks like he has three legs). I HATED sitting down so I grabbed my back-up bass and we were off and running again.

Hence, no Ric. I've since replaced the pin and we're good to go for Mexico in a couple of weeks.

I can't think of any other PE member whose new band has to include a song from the earlier band cuz they were so dang popular. Kerry, musically, where you go, I will follow. And I'm by no means alone! As for the pin snapping, it could be worse - if we all live long enough, we might one day hear about the pin snapping on an adult diaper onstage! Bring it on, Heliopolis; we're all waiting.....

Thank you Modry; your herculean efforts at keeping this thread alive are duly noted; scotch and lobsters are being delivered to you via FedEx as I type (someone will have to be home to sign for the lobsters).

As for the name suggestion, I like it: "Waiters and gentlemen, all the way from Los Angeles, give it up for Hell Lions Who Bite the People!" :) Incidentally, our name was bestowed upon us by a gentleman named Ron Fuchs; I thought it was cool to have someone outside the band come up with a name and, henceforth, if anyone hates the name we can blame it on Ron. :)

Way more progressive sounding that your past work Kerry. And...I really like it!! I'd definitely buy a CD.

Mozo, thank you sire; this band doesn't sound anything like the old band and I couldn't be happier, I love changing things up and this crew is more than up to the task.

Neptune, you have always been so kind and supportive -- thanks so much. We are stoked to announce we'll be recording our debut album with David Morse at the helm; Dave's got a resume as long as my....um....arm and he's really going out of his way to help us out (he mastered MH's "World in Front of Me" thanks to his long-time friendship with our drummer, Jerry Beller). Our first studio date is May 26th -- can't wait to get this rolling!

Sharing some sad news...our dear friend and lead vocalist Scott Jones had to take an emergency trip back east to take care of his Dad who is critically ill. Understandably this means Scott will not be joining Heliopolis at Mexicali Prog this weekend; Scott has generously given us his blessings to move forward and lead vocals will be handled by Matt and me -- the show will go on. Positive thoughts and prayers are most appreciated and it goes without saying we will be dedicating this performance to Scott and his Dad.

To Scott and family, positive thoughts and prayers are being sent their way. As to the rest of the band, I suspect a monster performance is forthcoming as a musical shout-out to their brother-in-arms that, unfortunately, has far more pressing business to take care of. Puts life in perspective, eh? Regardless, kick some arse out there on the West Coast, gentlemen...:up

Thank you Bails; Scott's getting things together back home and should be back in Los Angeles soon.

Meanwhile, we had a blast this past weekend down in Mexicali. Of course, the weather was insane -- 101 degrees, just blazingly hot compared to a couple of days before -- but then again, this is pretty much the Sonoran desert so what do you expect? We ran into a bunch of Baja Prog attendees, saw some old friends and made a lot of new ones, too, and of course played music, ate some fantastic Mexican food, and drank plenty of cervezas.

Local band Vertical Smile opened the proceedings; really great stuff, an interesting mix of jazz, rock and prog, very impressive showing:

Jorge of Fotomail Imagen Que Llega posted a couple of clips from our recent gig in Mexicali; we were without our lead vocalist for this show but he's back and ready to roll so all good.

This is the end of "New Frontier" and the beginning of our Mars Hollow cover of "In Your Hands":

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jcj5hLlZNvU

This is a link to a clip of a new song called "Take a Moment (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOxo5kL3tsU)."

We're really most excited about our recording session over Memorial Day weekend; we got drums and bass completed for 40+ minutes of music and the rough mixes from that day sound great to my ears; we've started guitar and keyboard overdubs and things are moving pretty quickly. We have two more songs to record in July and then we can start wrapping things up, if we're lucky the album will be finished by end of summer if we work hard and diligently. Here's a short video from the session:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Mzin5rXi4vA

Not that there's anything earth-shattering going on but there's a few pictures from the session here (http://heliopolislaprog.wix.com/heliopolislaprog#!recording-session-may-26-2013/cgz5) as well.

Other than that, we're playing with a couple of tribute bands on July 5th -- Caress of Steel, Maiden LA, and us:

If any LA-area PE members are even remotely interested, hit me up; we're on first (8:00PM), it's a Friday, holiday weekend, tons of parking and a great, roomy place to catch a show. :beer

Aw, man -- thank you for checking them out. GREAT guys and the "main" dude, Joel Martin, is all over so many bands and projects out here, a ridiculous talent; he has a bitchin' hard rock '70s cover band called Frakkus (umlat over the "u") I'm hoping to sit in with soon.

I've never before heard anyone playing & singing a song they wrote a cover.

:) I know, it's kind of a weird situation; we will likely be dropping it from our set as soon as we have enough Heliopolis material for a good 60-75 minute set. That said, I did write the thing and Heliopolis brings a different energy to it so who knows?

Philsunset, thanks man -- it would be exceptionally cool to see you. The gig will be at TRiP (http://tripsantamonica.com/) in Santa Monica if that helps with your planning -- where are you going to be staying? It's a free show, as are all shows at this cool little club. Here's a video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBKG551fGZk) from a gig we played there this past March if you're interested. Hope to see you come October.

I'll be there. I'll be there. I will be there. Kerry, thanks for the club location info. I hadn't thought about lodgings yet. When I've stayed in LA I usually have ended up in Marina Del Rey or nearby. Will be great to hang with you and hear your band! I think it's gonna be an excellent show!

Hey man, we're playing Paladino's (http://heliopolislaprog.wix.com/heliopolislaprog#!upcoming-shows/c6f5) in lovely Reseda on Friday July 5th with Maiden-LA and Caress of Steel (Iron Maiden and Rush tributes, respectively), we're on early, 8:00PM sharp, it would be a blast to meet you. Thank you!

That means a whole lot, man -- thank you SO much. Congrats on the upcoming Frogg Cafe gig at the NJ Proghouse 15th anniversary celebration, I am hoping you guys tape this for us west coasters! Looks like a great weekend of music -- break frogs legs. :)

Really appreciate you checking it out, King, and thank you for the kind words about Mars Hollow; this band still has some pop elements but there's also more of a jazzy, jammy edge to things as well, along with a taste of some pseudo-industrial vibes along with flat-out rock and roll. We're looking to have this puppy out by late summer/early fall this year -- things are moving really fast recording-wise.

Wow, that's right around the corner! We were offered a gig with a local prog band called The Gekko Project on Saturday June 29th but schedules didn't align; however, The Gekko Project would be worth checking out, I will post the info early next week, I don't think they've got a flyer out there yet. Gonna miss playing for you by a week! Unless you wanted to come to a rehearsal (we rehearse in Van Nuys) on Sunday June 30th?

With all that said, I put together a little collage of four of the tracks and an accompanying video, it's the "City of the Sun" album teaser posted on our website (http://heliopolislaprog.wix.com/heliopolislaprog); what you'll hear is what we walked out of the studio with on May 26, 2013: no edits, overdubs or manipulations (aside from the collage edit), just the raw, live tracks. Overdubs are currently in progress with the goal of having everything done by the end of July.

Thanks to anyone who chooses to visit our site and for checking out the video (http://heliopolislaprog.wix.com/heliopolislaprog), we appreciate it so much, especially in these salad days with so much great music and so many great bands out there. It means everything to us, please believe.

Thank you Chuck and flatliner, really appreciate the kindness and support!

The gig a week ago was fantastic; the promoter was concerned about turn-out but those concerns were unfounded -- we had a surprisingly great crowd, the promoter was most pleased and so were we, of course. I feel very lucky and quite grateful friends like you are sticking around to see what happens post-Mars Hollow; the loss of that band still hurts a year later but things get a little easier, once you understand. :)

I was hoping our friend Stephane Peter would upload the whole show on YouTube but the dude just got back from a month abroad and has a lot of stuff to catch up on; he did upload a video to Facebook which I can't share here but I was able to embed it on our website, it's on the home page if anyone is interested in checking it out (http://heliopolislaprog.wix.com/heliopolislaprog). All I'll say is we were very happy with the performance -- this was our 4th gig and by far our best. Matt Brown laid down some especially weird and wonderful synth leads on this one -- feeling SO blazingly amazed to be playing with this guy, he's got such great energy and it seems he can play anything his mind imagines.

Another friend, Paul Mouradjian, did post a clip on YouTube, it's Jerry Beller's drum solo and the outro of our closing song for the night:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUyqyVXq5-Y&noredirect=1

We are planning a special gig for September here in Los Angeles; the promoter, however, wants a crowd of 175-200 people for the night and I am not sure we can do that well, frankly. The line-up as planned is pretty special but I'm thinking the promoter might want to replace a couple of the bands I want with someone who might bring in more of a crowd, or at least a different crowd. We're looking at options, maybe even doing a private show at Swinghouse (http://www.swinghouse.com/); it would be more fun in a bar though! Will keep you posted.

The album is coming along great; Matt's almost done with keyboard overdubs, Mike's nearing completion of guitar overdubs, then we'll start on vocals hopefully late next week or the week after. Got one, possibly two, more songs to record later this month but I am feeling pretty good about the progress we've made. The goal is to have this mixed, mastered and ready for release by late summer, early fall. Considering this band didn't exist a year ago, and considering how much luck/work it takes to not only get a group of like-minded guys together but to learn/write an album's worth of songs, I've gotta say I'm pretty happy with the way things are going.

Thanks again for the support, and big thanks to anyone who takes the time to check out the videos. These are fantastic times for new prog-rock music, I know it's hard to take the time to check out yet another new band; hopefully we have a little bit of a head start thanks to our prior projects; all I will say is Heliopolis doesn't sound anything like Mars Hollow and I couldn't be happier. :)

With Jerry (FSTDRMR) and Steve (progsynth) here I might was well mention there's a good chance the three of us may be performing together again at some point in the near future; I'm working on setting up a gig with Heliopolis (http://heliopolislaprog.wix.com/heliopolislaprog) and Steve's fine new band Red Spectrum (and a couple other local prog-rock bands) in September here in the City of the Sun, who's to say we won't throw down a Mars Hollow tune or two? Hoping we can make it happen.

As for the recent Heliopolis gig, our fine friend Stephane Peter was gracious enough to post the whole set on YouTube; thanks to Stephane, and thanks to anyone who chooses to check 'em out.

Kerry, the band sounds great! (nice video clip). Best of luck with the new album.

Thank you Jon; we just had a band meeting last night and everyone is fired-up to finish the album asap, stat, pronto and Tonto. Considering we tracked basics over Memorial Day weekend, I'm happy to say we've been making great progress (we're 75% done with the music and starting on the vocals next week). A couple of guys in the band -- Scott Jones and Michael Matier -- are hardcore perfectionists (as people will soon be hearing via their prog-rock side-project "Box of Shaman" coming soon on 10T Records) but I'm more of an "attitude" and energy guy so some compromises have had to be ironed out. No worries, I am here to say what we've done thus far is making us very, very happy. :)

Since our last gig (July 5th) we've been taking it somewhat easy, doing overdubs on pretty much a weekly basis, but we've got three shows coming up in Sept., Oct., and November (at NOR CAL Prog Fest!) and we needed a meeting to schedule everything and put a timeline in place. Our goal is to have the album available on November 16th at the Nor Cal Prog Fest; we all think it's do-able.

Thank you Scott, we really appreciate it my friend; with all the freaking amazing releases this year alone, we just might need a little Lady Luck on our side. As always, the music will do the talking and hopefully it'll be engaging enough to catch some ears; Progressive Ears. :)

Meanwhile, our next show is "Progressive Momentum" and we're proud to be featuring Phideaux (http://www.bloodfish.com/) (solo acoustic + guests), Red Spectrum (http://redspectrumband.com/) (featuring former Mars Hollow members Steve Mauk, Bob Craft and Joe August), Sons Of Nothing (progressive-melodic rock), Lobate Scarp (http://lobatescarp.bandcamp.com/) (trippy space rock), Hot Karate (http://hotkarate.bandcamp.com/album/finger-food) (uncatagorizable madness) and of course Heliopolis (http://heliopolislaprog.wix.com/heliopolislaprog).

We've been talking with Steve about joining Heliopolis for some Mars Hollow (http://www.marshollow.com/band.html) goodness and we're working up a fun medley; we haven't played any of that music since Mars Hollow folded so it should be interesting, if somewhat emotional, to re-visit some of that stuff. I'm elated the issues that plagued the band last year has been swept aside and at least the three of us still out here in LA remain musical cohorts and friends. We all went through a lot and as they say, time wounds all heels. :)

Saturday, Sept. 21, 7:30PM sharp at Paladino's, 21+ -- ten bucks gets you in the door.

7:30PM – Phideaux (solo acoustic with special guests tba)
8:00PM – Red Spectrum
9:00PM – Sons of Nothing
10:00PM – Heliopolis
11:00PM -- Lobate Scarp

I had a great time at the Progressive Momentum show last night at Paladino's. Kudos to everyone involved for pulling off the seemingly impossible: a full-blown Prog Rock event in Los Angeles. My friend's band Red Spectrum had to cancel due to an injury in the band, so that was a bummer for everyone. I was really looking forward to hearing their latest musical progress. Phideaux played a great "unplugged" set that was whimsical and harkened back to the more pastoral side of Genesis. They did get to rock out on their final number with the help of some of their friends. Heliopolis was explosive. They play a relentless form of progressive rock that is dense and constantly changing. Can you say a lot of notes? I knew you could. Everyone in the band is a monster on their respective instrument while also staying true to the pantheon of classic Progressive Rock bands like Yes. I even heard some Dave Greenslade era Coliseum in there. I really enjoyed these guys and I am looking forward to the release of their album early next year. I got a chance to chat with Kerry who is really cool and a total ham on stage. I also spoke to Phideaux who was really nice and gave me a copy of the Snowtorch album. Thanks! Super nice guys all around and I wish them all great success with their music.

Many thanks to Stickleback, Ancient Chord and Simon Moon for the gesture of support; I guarantee every band who played that night appreciates it very much, I know I do.

Aside from Red Spectrum canceling the afternoon of the gig (which left us in a bit of a scramble to rearrange the schedule), I think the show came off really well; it was a lot of fun for me, Jerry and Steve to play a Mars Hollow song together again after so long, and the three of us also had a blast playing with the most excellent Phideaux for his song, "Tempest of Mutiny" (video here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KmUHQd_zJs&feature=youtu.be)). Lobate Scarp put on a great show as well, and Hot Karate were interesting, although a lot of folks had cleared out by the time they came on-stage.

We had a reasonable-sized crowd, certainly nothing to sneeze at but not anywhere near CalProg numbers; then again, these were all indie bands with no real headliner so in that respect the evening was a success -- put it this way, we made some money, which is always a welcome surprise.

I really enjoyed meeting Joe August and Bob Craft from Red Spectrum; these guys temporarily replaced me and Jerry in Mars Hollow (which is now officially dead and buried) and turned what could have been an uncomfortable situation into a complete blast. We had a lot of laughs trading stories and they are really great guys, we were very sorry they had to cancel their performance but for them to show up and support the gig in spite of that was exceptionally cool. Looking forward to hanging out more and hopefully playing a show together soon.

Thanks again to you guys for representing the Prog Ears contingent, and for taking the time to share your thoughts; it means a lot to us, please believe, and I very much enjoyed meeting you.

We're back again Friday, October 11th at 9:00PM at TRiP in Santa Monica (http://tripsantamonica.com/)with our friends, the most excellent Running Jumps (http://www.therunningjumps.com/), it's a free show and both bands are on early (8:00PM and 9:00PM), anyone who wrote me about what's next, here it is:

After this show we're playing Nor Cal Prog Festival (http://norcalprogfestival.org/) in November and that wraps up a pretty amazing first year for the band -- seven shows played and a record almost in the can.

I just heard Heliopolis. Bloody brilliant stuff.

Thank you, Matt, that means a lot my friend.

The audio clip Matt's referring to is the first four minutes of our album opener; we put it together for a podcast promoting the show and decided to share it; it's a band mix and we're still working on vocals but it gives a reasonable indication of what to expect of the album.

We truly wanted to have the record out this year but with me moving (found a great little house on a half acre in "horse country" just north of here), and with everyone having their own personal obligations, we decided, "Why kill ourselves?" I remember when Mars Hollow rushed our second album's release to coincide with our RoSFest appearance, I swore I would never put myself through that kind of stress again. I feel very comfortable not only wearing my Jockey for Her™ but in saying the album will be released in February or March of next year. It feels great to have some breathing room (except for the Jockey for Her™ which are a little on the tight side).

Brad Birzer of Progarchy was kind enough to post a little press release/blurb about the band and at the bottom of the page is a player where anyone interested can stream the audio clip, just click the image and you're there.

rapping

I got really, really emotionally moved by a "rap" song yesterday; I'd heard about this song for years and years but never thought it would be something I would be interested in hearing -- I'm not real big on violence, especially men against women -- but this thing had me in tears. I couldn't stop thinking about it, the raw emotion, the conflict, the sense of losing it and turning into a horrible monster, goaded along no doubt by drugs, alcohol and infidelity. The pure rage, the anger, saying "fuck it, you're going to hear what I have to say so shut up and listen"; I'm not real proud to say this but the song touched a nerve in me, a dark place I don't usually allow myself to go. It brought forth feelings of abandonment, awakening that little kid inside of me and scaring the shit out of him.

I thought, "You know what? This is art. This is the reason art exists -- nothing more than pure emotional expression, unfettered and honest and a little bit scary, created for it's own sake because some things just need to be said."

I've always disregarded this particular artist, one of the most successful rappers in the business, and an anomaly at that. In the dark corners of that song, I connected with the dude, felt his pain and confusion and rage and remorse. I fucking cried, and I still cry thinking about it. I love it when that connection happens, even if it's a commentary on the frailties and failures of being a human being (you know I much prefer the sunshine and laughter and the clouds parting and everything is going to be fine).

The artist?

Fucking Eminem.

The song?

"Kim"

I never wanted to hear the track because I thought, "The last thing I need to hear is some street punk boastfully rapping about killing his wife 'cause she cheated on him." Well, yeah, he kills her in the song but that's a foregone conclusion; it's about so, so much more than that.

Let me put it this way -- this song has given me a new perception about self-expression and made me ask, "Just how far am I willing to go to expose myself."

I've gotta hand it to the dude, this is some seriously heavy, heavy shit.

Now -- back to "Pet Sounds". :)

After a blast of a show up in San Mateo this past November -- Nor Cal Prog (http://norcalprogfestival.org/) II -- I told the guys, "Guys, I'm taking the next six weeks off, let's chill and revitalize ourselves come January '14." Here's a pic courtesy of prog-rock fan and spectacular photographer Esa Ahola (http://esa.ahola.net/):

Apparently, I'm now a chicken farmer.

So, yeah, 2013 was full of challenges; if Heliopolis (http://heliopolislaprog.wix.com/heliopolislaprog) were a super-carrier we'd be called the USS Fraughtwith Peril. To begin with, we played six gigs last year so that right there took up a good chunk of our time; then our vocalist Scott lost his beloved father, then our guitarist Mike lost his beloved mother, and finally our keyboardist Matt learned he's due for some pretty major surgery next month.

We started recording our debut album, "City of the Sun", Memorial Day weekend 2013; between our various and sundry personal crises and gigs we managed to wrap up guitar and keyboard overdubs by late fall (drums and bass were finished on the first day -- oh, hells ya!). We recorded vocals for one song in November, then we slowed down a bit over the holidays and reconvened last week to finish off the singing. Last Sunday was incredible -- we nailed a bunch of vocal stuff and I've gotta say I am exceptionally happy with the way it's all coming together.

This weekend is a second, hopefully final, vocal session; in yet another setback, Matt's got the flu this week -- and surgery to follow shortly thereafter -- so he is officially finished with his contributions to the album unless we delay this endeavor another 3-4 months (which, believe me, I do NOT want to see happen). Four of us sing so we've got a good bench to fall back on, and, while I am bummed Matt's not going to be able to record his harmony vocals on the last two songs, I'm looking forward to the challenge of stepping up and kicking some ass -- cords? -- this weekend. I love singing harmony and with Scott and Jerry at my side, I'm confident we'll walk away with some keepers.

The plan is to finish all the vocals by January 31, do vocal comps and pre-mixes the first 2 weeks of Februay, then it's off to David Javu Morse for mixing (he also mixed and mastered Mars Hollow's "World in Front of Me"). We hope to be mastering the album at LA's Bernie Grund Mastering (http://www.berniegrundmanmastering.com/) in early March and manufacturing a small run of physical CD's by the end of said month whilst simultaneously getting the artwork and credits together.

Meanwhile, we're talking to some friends at a great label about signing a contract and ensuring a little press and distribution in North America.

After all that, I'm planning on taking a nice nap.

I've got all the most current tracks and I think the album -- about 45 minutes, 5 songs total -- is a damned fun ride. It's book-ended by a couple of mini-epics very much in the classic uppercase Progressive Rock vein, a "pop" song with a nice, blazing Hammond B3 twist in the middle, a slow-burning rocker and a weird-ass instrumental.

I wish I could share some stuff but I've already leaked enough (that's what adult diapers are for) and if I share anything else I'll be fired from my own band with good reason. However, if, on the off chance, anyone hasn't heard a little 4-minute sample of the opening track, it's streaming on our website (http://heliopolislaprog.wix.com/heliopolislaprog).

Dan, you asked for an update. :) Thanks to anyone who checks any of this stuff out, we appreciate it! With that, I wish everyone a wonderful, adventure-filled weekend.

Sounds awesome, Kerry! Thanks for the update!

Sorry to hear about all of the personal tragedy within the band. I hope 2014 brings better fortune for all involved.

I happy to hear that the plague of locusts has, at least for now, left the chicken farmer (great pic, man!).

In a macabre twist of fate, this thread was resurrected today on my 69th birthday. My last year of middle-age before I become "old & in the way".

Stay well, dude!

Thank you Scott, and Steve: happy birthday man! Sixty-nine, are you kidding me? Last time I saw you, you looked maybe, I dunno, somewhere between 12 and 57. :) Wishing you an exceptionally happy birthday my friend; it's 6:42PM PST now so I assume you and your better -- ok, way better -- half are out setting the town on fire (for warmth and survival) in Madison celebrating like it's 1999.

For all I know you're in Hawaii. Happy birthday!

Thanks for the news! Marty & I had been dealing with a bit of our own crud, so I hope 2014 is mucho better for all & ever.
I hope we can get out & catch some live Heliopolis later this year... Just not May, okay? We got two tickets to paradise (four actually) going to The Big Island of Hawaii.
Cheers & Happy Fewbeers!

Sorry to hear this, man; it was so cool meeting you and Marty last year up in Berkeley, we would love to see you guys again. Here's to a hassle-free 2014.

I hope so, too; last year was great as far as gigs go and I'd like to think we achieved what we set out to achieve, which was proving ourselves capable of delivering the goods as a live band. With all due respect to my past bands and band-mates, Heliopolis has more of an improvisational thing happening and the more we play, the more confident we are in getting out of our comfort zones and just going for it.

As of now, we have nothing on the horizon as far as live shows; I'm not booking anything until I'm holding the album in my hands. Plus Matt's upcoming surgery will put us out of commission until probably...May. :) Will keep you posted, we would love to go back to the Bay Area again, I'd really love to play San Francisco proper and make a holiday weekend out of it.

I've got two ticks and they're parasites. Have a blast on The Big Island!

Prog on, Kerry! Looking forward to hearing the album when it comes out!

Oh, and happy birthday, Steve! And thanks for suggesting that at 60, I'm still middle-age. :)

Postponing a suicide for this (not mine... :) ) so it'd better be WORTH it!

Kerry - will you be doing a pre-order type of thing?

Or, whatever - just let us know how to order it. :)

Will do Scott, thanks man. Mastering starts next week, really excited to hear this album in final form soon.

Also, we've got an LA-area gig coming up, our official CD release party with a couple of excellent local bands, XNA (http://aliiwebservices.com/dmh84/main.html) and a re-formation of the much beloved Genesis tribute Gabble Ratchet; I'm pasting Matt Brown's Facebook post:

Heliopolis (http://heliopolislaprog.wix.com/heliopolislaprog) are teaming up with XNA to do a gig on September 27, at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza.

Also playing that night, the Brown/Hussey/Collins/Wilson/Connor lineup of Gabble Ratchet, for the first time in 4 or 5 years. I've lost count! A special guest will be there too, just don't call him Shirley. :)

Will advise when tickets are available!

Hi Steve! :)
