I was going to start a group, but I've been told by the mods that music related groups will disappear.
This thread is for those of us who like stoner or heavy pysche. You know, bands like Trouble, Causa Sui, Colour Haze, Sungrazer, Baroness, Brotherhood Of Sleep, Samsara Blues Experiment, Spirit Caravan,Earthless, etc...etc...

I'm certainly In on this one. i'm not sure if I've heard Trouble or Baroness, but I like all the others; Earthless & BoS probably being my favorites. I'm not whining, but I wish Earthless would release a new album.

I have been trying to post youtube links for both Trouble and Baroness, but it does not work the same on this version. Trouble is an old doom metal band from the 80s. They basically had 2 incarnations. Their 80s output is definitely 80s metal sounding, but, imo, a cut above what most bands were doing back then. Then in the 90s, they worked with Rick Rubin for a couple of albums, and their sound morphed into a more straight-ahead stoner influence rock style.
Baroness is from Georgia and are similar in sound to Mastodon, though I enjoy Baroness more. Their "RED" and "BLUE" albums are superior to their newest double CD "Yellow & Green" .

I may be the only stoner fan who is a teetotaler. Probably like being a christian satanist, but I love Melvins, Yob, Sleep, Mammatus to name a few. If you haven't seen the Such Hawks, Such Hounds documentary, seek it out, pretty good overview of the scene and some of the better known bands.
Not sure what's up with Earthless, think Live at Roadburn was their last release and that was a few years ago. The drummer has been busy with Off! lately so maybe Earthless will get back together after Off! wraps up touring for their latest.

I like Yob, Sleep, Mammatus and many others. I think I'd like the Melvins if they were instrumental. I can't get past Buzz's voice. Odd, maybe, since Yob's vocals don't bother me at all.

Recently picked up High On Fire-Death Is This Communion. You decide if it is Stoner Rock. Cost me $1 brand new, and it doesn't suck.

The new COLOUR HAZE double CD as well.
For some strange reason I cannot get the youtube links to work on my PC at work, they they are fine on my Mac at home....

ANCESTORS are a weird deal. I prefer their first two that had a harder stoner vibe. Their last offerings Invisible white and In dreams and time have strong neoprog elements (the same washed-out Pink Floyidian atmosphere that prevails the current Anathema stuff). Pleasant but not mind blowing as their Neptune with fire album.

Re: Ancestors. I've got all their albums, but tend to reach for the last couple more often than the first two. That said, I agree they lay the Floyd stuff on a bit too thick at times these days. Heck, the cover of In Dreams could have been done by Hipgnosis.

i highly, highly recommend the first s/t album which has been long out of print but soon to be released on a double disc, it just absolutely kills. the whole damn Masters catalog is worth having.
Sufferbus, man, back in the day i was pretty obsessed with the first MoR that when i found out there was a new one on the way i couldn't be happier, then the 'holy shit' moment of finding out Ginger Baker was drumming on that one was even better.
yup, anything that Chris Goss puts his hands on is golden in my book, incuding the newest release from The Cult.

Like Whorg, I have recently explored this area. Current fave is My Sleeping Karma, can't seem to get enough of them. Something about them... the vibe, repetitive psychedelic grooves, thundering bass, spacey keys and solid, but tasty drumming. Some great tension and release music. "Soma" is an absolute monster. My favorite CD so far this year. And this is a genre of music that I knew nothing about a year ago. Cool stuff. Great to see other suggestions. A sample:

7 Zuma 7 - unfortunately I think they only did one album. According to All.music: The stoner metal movement of the late ‘90s was primarily based in the U.S., but other areas of the world spawned similarly styled outfits as well, including Eindhoven, Holland's 7 Zuma 7. Formed in the middle of the decade, the group's original line-up consisted of singer/guitarist Jerry van Eyck, guitarist John Peate, bassist Nick Sanders, and drummer Jacco van Rooij. 1997 saw the release of a self-titled, five song EP, which led to appearances at such music festivals as the Dynamo Open Air 1996 and 1998 and Lowlands 1998, and made a major fan out of Monster Magnet frontman Dave Wyndorf. December of 1998 saw Sander's exit from the band, as two bassists attempted to fill the vacant spot over the course of 1999 (first up was Ronald Herregraven, next was Arjen Rienks), before newcomer Miranda Vandervoot was welcomed onboard permanently. The same year, 7 Zuma 7 issued their debut full-length, Deep Inside, which featured a spirited cover of the Who classic, "The Seeker."

So then you have an idea of what I think of this "sub-genre".
For a sub-genre that claims to be influenced by the 70's bands and 70's production, only one person on Obelisk thanked me - or even made the least mention - for posting a linkiepoo there with a treasure trove of video clips of 70s hard n' heavies.

Not full-on stoner, but that Ancestors disc I recently ordered is good! How many have they released? Am I better to look for earlier recordings?
Three full lengths and one mini album.
Neptune With Fire (2008)
My prefered album of theirs. A concept work of savage stoner doom with an early 70s proto-prog influence due to the swirling organ work. Two side-long riff ladden tracks based on a thick rythm section, heavy guitar licks, extensive jamming with a psych/prog vibe and spiralling spacerock twists. And everything evolves effortlessly driven by a hungry need to "deliver the goods". Brilliant all the way through!
Of Sound Mind (2009)
Still a concept work but of a more controlled nature than their debut. It consists of a series of more song structured pieces, sandwiched between brief instrumental intervals. The hammond organ gets more space here, a fact that makes parts of the album sound somewhat Deep Purplish. Acoustic bits creep in, the guitar sound has a 70s hard bluesy nature in the jamming parts and the proto-prog influence is stronger. More diversed but compaired to the mammoth opus of their debut it raised some questions about their future direction but it is still a high quality offering.
Invisible White (2011) -mini LP
Here is when deception came in. Strong line-up changes and a new keyboard dominated direction that is a complete departure from their stoner doom roots. The guitars have a supporting 2nd role and the atmosphere is full of "poor man's Pink Floydisms" with a very deja vu impression to my ears. The tracks do flow, but nothing spectacular seems to happen and the majic of their earlier works seems lost. I would by-pass this one as their most weak.
In Dreams and Time (2012)
It builds on the path of Invisible White but with improved results. Structured compositions with more emphasis on Floydian prog paths resulting in lower edged heavy outbursts that remind me of a tamed Neurosis. The stoner influences are almost abandoned and they sound a completely different band than the one that recorded "Neptune with Fire". Those who love ANCESTORS for their doom metal character of their earlier work will be somewhat deceived but In Dreams and Time is clearly a work of musical evolution; the album that tries to push them in a wider audience than the one of the stoner fans (in a positive way). I have a feeling that they will further explore the prog aspect of their works with their future releases and I would like to see them abandon the Floydian stylings for more complex/adventurus structures. They seem capable of achieving higher levels of maturity.

you guys tend to like longer tunes , all these clips have the bands playing quietly arpeggiated guitar bits/sections then turning it up after 2 minutes or so and then having a loud screaming section and then a change and repeating the formula with pretty tried and true riffs somewhere in the mix.
I tend to like "stoner" that hits hard and has good riffs changes and maybe small solos of some kind. now back in the day stoner meant the kind of music you smoke dope to and then make a run to get munchies about 3 in themorning ; it tended to mellow everyone out. but it seems formulaic in many ways. i suppose i'm just jaded , lol

Nice haul indeed rael! All excellent bands! The only disc I don't have in my collection or on order is "She Said". The rest are all a part of my "Stoner" playlist on iTunes (which just happens to be my most played playlist)!

Glad you like 'em! With the Beggars, the ones to start with are Another Way to Shine, Mantra III, Ad Astra and On Fire. The first 3 have "Spice" on vocals; On Fire has "JB" on vocals. That's Per Wiberg from Opeth doing the keyboards you hear occasionally. They did another album with JB, "Demons" which I don't have yet, wasn't that crazy about the samples I heard. Their most recent "Return to Zero" has a third new vocalist, I've heard it on Youtube; it's okay but doesn't blow me away like the other stuff.
If you like JB's vocals, he has another band called Grand Magus, which may or may not come under the stoner category. Each album is different in style from the next so listen to samples before buying. One album is very doomy, another is heroic metal a la Manowar, etc.
Grand Magus, to me, is classic metal. I'm a fan. I think JB's vocals fit that style better than stoner. Stoner rock is about sparse vocals, which should never be the focus of any song. JB's voice is too strong and tends to over power the music. The debut Spiritual Beggers is still my fave of the 4 or 5 I own.

Well, they started out as a doom metal band, so I guess they are on the boards of stoner (due to the savage Sabbath riffing). By their 3rd album Wolf´s Return, they switched to a more NWoBHM influenced style that led them on the full blown (and boringly mainstream i.m.o.) heavy metal of Hammer of the North and The Hunt.

Yes, it's interesting that I'm so drawn to this music considering I didn't care for Sabbath at all and was lukewarm to Led Zep back then. I didn't like Ozzie's voice and thought their albums always sounded so compressed.... yet when all these modern bands reach back to that sound I can't get enough of it. Maybe it's just being tired of hearing digital recordings and music made with ProTools that I like the sound of something real, with dirt under the fingernails, warm analog music...

Yeah, yer a stoner all right! :lol You just named 3 FU MANCHU albums! (and I think we discussed some of these a few pages back)
The Wo Fat albums I have are Psychodelonaut (2009), Nocha del Chupacabra (2011) and the newest, The Black Code. Blistering, smokey, analog-baked goodness with an emphasis on the guitar (i.e. there are vocals but not a lot).

...and since you brought up Fu Manchu, I'll comment on some other albums you don't have yet by them. "Daredevil" is killer, possibly my favorite by them, came out right before In Search Of and The Action is Go. "King of the Road" and "California Crossing" come after those, both excellent. There's also an EP in between there called "Eatin' Dust", which I haven't picked up yet. They lose me on the next one, "Start the Machine". I like the opening track, "Written in Stone" and nothing else. Sounds like punk rock with short songs, no guitar jamming, backed off on the fuzz tone... I can't listen to this album. "We Must Obey" is somewhat better, a few tunes I like but still stuff that sounds like punk and I never liked the Cars original of "Moving In Stereo" and don't like hearing FM cover it, should have been at end of the album as a bonus track. The latest, "Signs of Infinite Power" is a return to thick fuzz. Maybe 2-3 songs still retain a bit of the punk approach but overall I like the album a lot. I don't have their first album, "No One Rides for Free", heard a few cuts and it sounds like they hadn't developed their signature sound yet.

I did a little research and found that they played their first gig in March of this year and it appears that they do not have any recorded material. But they are planning a CD release in Spring 2013.

their first album is one of my desert island picks, packaged with a live disc - that's a no brainer.
I cannot believe all the great music I'm discovering thanks to this thread. No shit, it's been a little like discovering the underground prog scene in 1991!! Some of the bands I'm really digging so far are Colour Haze, Ancestors, Kyuss and Glowsun. Last night, I listened to the new OM album for the first time and it blew me away. It kind of reminded me of Dead Can Dance jamming with Black Sabbath and The PLJ Band. Just awe-inspiring stuff. Not to mention Witchcraft and Blood Ceremony. It seems like there's an endless amount of music under the psychedelic/stoner rock banner out there. And I've recently re-discovered Saint Vitus, a band I hadn't listened to since I had them on an old SST compilation cassette back in the 80s. Thanks again guys!
Welcome to the fold Steve! I could not agree more! This has been my favorite subgenre to explore in the last couple of years. Guys like avestin and spacefreak would start dropping names in threads and I'd have pen and paper in hand. Then I started exploring labels like Electrohasch, Tee Pee Records, Rise Above... and discovered this was a vibrant scene, with talented bands from different parts of the world.
You may want to check out retro bands that aren't necessarily stoner also; like Siena Root, Causa Sui, Astra, Graveyard....

I'm ashamed to admit I've never heard a note from Candlemass. What's a good entry point?
I just received a couple of issues of a new magazine called Occult Rock. At $13 a pop, they are pretty expensive with only about 30 printed pages or so. I guess it's more of a fanzine in a way, but I got them from Amazon. Blood Ceremony is on the cover of the newest issue. Good Gawd, there are tons of band names that begin with Witch, Devil and Demon. They all start to blend together after awhile. Pretty soon, they are going to run out of names!

They're not stoner but the very first band that mixed traditional Sabbath influenced doom with epic metal. Their first two, "Epicus, Doomicus, Metallicus" and "Nightfall" are essential timeless classics and among the best releases of 80s metal (when the genre was at its peak).

there are like 4 or 5 shows from the sugar megs website.
I was listening to Earthless and Wo-Fat last night. Two very different bands but I guess both firmly fall under the stoner umbrella. Anyway, every time I spin "Rhythms From a Cosmic Sky", I hear something new. I don't know if they were influenced by Krautrock but I hear a lot of things that remind me of Ash Ra Tempel and Amon Duul...as well as Blue Cheer! Incredible power trio.
And am I completely nuts if I say that Wo-Fat reminds me of classic ZZ Top? I don't know, there is almost a southern rock sound to my ears. At least there was last night while under the influence. ;)

They definitely have a "Texas" vibe going on. I won't complain as I think it adds a little something to their sound.
I finally sat down this weekend and seriously listened to Causa Sui's "Pewt'r Sessions". Yeah, it's just extended jams but man do I love these guys! This one is every bit as good as their Summer Sessions from a few years back.
Not stoner per se, but heavy retro psyche that deserve a mention in this thread.

Yes, there is a bit of that vibe. There is also a bit of Mississippi Hill Country blues artists in their overall sound. Before I bought their albums, I was doing some reading about the band and was thrilled to see they were fans of that genre (i.e. RL Burnside, Junior Kimbrough, Fat Possum Records) and that cemented my decision to buy (along with having heard the samples). They do quote some of those artists on the Psychodelanaut album. Their overall smoky, blistering sound that threatens to veer out of control is right out of the MHC blues playbook...

I second Steve's statement above. So much cool music in this genre. I picked up that latest Kadavar based on Yves' recommendation, and really dig it a lot. Have you guys checked out Sideburn? Their latest IV Monument is SMOLDERING stuff, doomy metal with some classic metal overtones and plenty of crushing riffs. If you like the mix of stoner with '70s hard rock the Transubstans Records/Record Heaven folks are coming out with tons of great new bands out of Scandinavia, like Captain Crimson, Three Seasons, Thalamus, Stonewall Noise Orchestra, and many more.
Pete, I think you'll really dig Wo-Fat! Funny you should mention Three Seasons. I just got their first album but haven't had a chance to listen to it yet. I heard a few samples and it sounded like really cool Deep Purple-ish retro rock.

^ this is from Amazon: "Yes, Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats have, in recent times, become one of the most talked about rock bands currently in existence. Mind Control (their third full-length album) is set for release in April, following their two debut London sell-out concerts at The Garage. ...From the album comes the monstrously catchy Poison Apple, which gives a glimpse into their exciting dark melodic realm and fuzzorama enhanced tales of terror and horror. Mind Control is a concept album with a theme that makes the acts and intentions of the likes of Charles Manson and Jim Jones seem like petty crimes. What makes Mind Control scarier than most albums is that it doesnt seem as sinister on the surface as it really is deep down within the core of its black acid-drenched world of pain and torture. It's very easy to get carried away and lost in the magnificent heavy groovy sounds and psychedelic jams but dont forget this UNCLE ACID HAS COME TO KILL!!"
