Good, lord.

You think we would try to fool everyone by not saying this is a compilation from previous DVDs, if that's what it was?

And holy shit, is it good! First, Philippe Bussonnet has to be hands down one of the great bassists. Just watching the first 2 minutes of KA shows how hard some of those lines are. And I swear I nearly cried watching James MacGaw's solo during Kohntarkosz, knowing that this would be one of his last shows with the band. They are on fire! And Benoit has more instruments up on stage than I have ever seen- marimbas, glockenspiel, tubular bells, drums and cymbals and gongs, kids' xylophone. Plus Julie Vander as well.

Get this. Phenomenal!

...James MacGaw's solo during Kohntarkosz, knowing that this would be one of his last shows with the band...

If memory serves, he went on to play quite a few gigs with Magma, including tours of China, North America, etc., until he was forced to stop. I last saw him play with Magma in May 2015 (again at Le Triton), which was over six months after the performances caught on this DVD.

This being said, I understand & share your feelings, although I have yet to receive the DVD (I was at three of the shows, including one the first week which had Benoît Widemann on second keyboards).

Actually they do, although not this one. I learned it was coming out thanks to this thread. But I usually get e-mails about releases and important gigs.

I was fortunate enough to attend one of the concerts they did at Le Triton in 2014, the one the day after the first Lindsay Cooper memorial concert in London. Was it the last one in their residency? I believe so. Anyway, it was a memorable concert, probably the best I've ever seen by any band in my entire life.

They condensed some sections to make the whole thing last under two hours, and that's one of the sections that was excised. In the first week, even though they had Benoît Widemann on second keyboards, I don't think he had a solo in that section either.

That solo is truly MINDBLOWING!!! And it's such a high point that I really don't miss having the KA and Hhai solos...and actually that truncated section of KA was one of the highlights for me. The whole DVD though might just be Magma's pinnacle IMHO - a few more viewings needed! Beautifully filmed as well. Quite glad they ditched the funeral section though...

Why not? I love the performances - I just don't love the mix on the low end, with the usual 'thin' sounding kick drum and electric bass. That aside, this is one of the definitive performances of the TH Trilogie maybe along with the Epok versions. Magma seems to age quite well like good French wine. I still love the BBC Londres, but its not the full Trilogie. I'm really looking forward to diving into these ER DVDs when they arrive.

Is it music that they wrote recently, or a recording of old material? I recognised Hhai, but I mean the rest of it.

Is this just stiched 70's material or more recent music involved?

The first main fragment (E-R Intro / Hhaï) was always meant to be a suite. In 1977, this and the Zombies section were part of a long medley which also included De Futura and the Ptah drum solo, so there's a kind of logic that they should be part of the same suite, although the segue from Hhai to Zombies didn't exist back then (at least I don't think it did) since there was De Futura / Ptah between them. In 2005, Magma began playing a work in progress version of the complete E-R suite which iirc stopped a few minutes into Zombies. The next sections were added gradually until 2008. Supposedly this includes some completely new material, but Vander has remained evasive about exactly what is newly composed, as he likes to encourage the myth that this, somehow, was how the piece was always meant to be. Well, this is difficult to reconclie with Klaus Blasquiz saying in interviews ca. 1976-77 that Emehntehtt-Re was going to be a triple-album...

Lots of info in this French fanzine :
https://fr.calameo.com/books/000886196616f44af0512

My guess is that CV had an unfinished arrangement of the complete E-Rê in the 70's although not all of it could be performed then (cf the "barebones" version of "Zombies" on the Orléans 1977 recording).
The only new music added to the suite would then be the coda ("Funerarium Kahnt"), composed in the 00's.

Good to read. I really do place "Kohntarkosz" well above anything else in the Magma oeuvre in terms of emotional depth, and despite coming late in the band's career, I've never felt its power captured so well as in this particular version. James' incendiary, almost prescient (in terms of this being his Magma "swansong", so to speak) solo is a not unsignificant factor.

+1
His performance on the DVD (most likely from 21 november 2014), outstanding as it is, is not as "out there" as the two concerts I attended in this series (20 & 22/11. I made a note about his "insane" guitar solo in my diary. It was similar in concept to the one on the DVD, but on that last night it went to 11).

She is the daughter of Christian [his sole offspring] and Stella Vander, and half-sister to Marcus Linon who usually does the band's lights.

She used to sing in Ad Vitam (alongside Isabelle). More recently she has done a tribute to Freddie Mercury project with a pianist.

Yeah, that would be great. I'm sure there are ways to extract audio from a Blu/Ray or DVD.

I've always wanted a Univers Zero dvd accompaniment of a cd.

One was filmed. DD wouldn’t allow it - at least at a price that was in any way affordable, since I was paying for it / for him to agree to allow it.

Was supposed to be the second disc of Clivages.

I thought I read somewhere recently that things were looking brighter (like he was in remission), but I don't remember where or who possibly eluded to that? Hopefully it true, he seems like such a class act and sweet guy. Really hope he beats this.

News on James has been very positive. After his treatment, he is in complete remission, if I understand the French on the Magma FB boards. He has been present at some past shows, though has not played.
