I saw Looper over the weekend. Overall I liked it, although I think it started a lot stronger than it finished. I spotted what I think are two Sergio Leone references in it. There is one scene in which the main character is being pursued and he stops by his apartment and realizes that someone is probably in his place, because there is a still-lit cigar in his living room (which he puts to his mouth, much like Tuco did while stalking Clint Eastwood in The Good, The Bad & The Ugly). I thought that this might just be a coincidence, but then when a child is gunned down later in the film, the manner in which the scene is staged and shot very closely resembles that in Once Upon a Time in the West, when Henry Fonda kills the little farm boy at the beginning of that movie. So I would say that this very obvious homage scene makes it likely that the cigar scene wasn't just a coincidence (not that this would be particularly surprising, as those old spaghetti westerns continue to be a source of inspiration for filmmakers today). Did anybody who saw this movie catch any other Leone references?

Haven't seen that, but did just see Patsy Cline: Sweet Dreams Still, Anamorph, and Sunshine State. Enjoyed all 3. Last week saw enough of The Darjeeling Limited on showtime (with audio gaps) that I put it on the netflix list and pushed it ahead of the other 1000 films. We also have 11 weeks of http://www.chillerdrive-in.com/index.html to catch up on.

We saw Moonrise Kingdom over the weekend. Now I know some dislike Wes Anderson's admittedly twee style but if you can overcome that, or if you are indeed a fan of it, this is one of his best films.

Has anyone seen Here Comes The Boom? I've been wanting to see that. I did see Argo, and loved it.

Is this for movies that have been released recently, or for films you have seen recently? The last film I watched was made in 1933 :-/

Yeah, I guess I wasn't totally clear about that. I suppose I meant for it to be about recent-release movies that you've seen. There is possibly more urgency to have this kind of discussion, since films have a limited amount of time in the theater (where some people might prefer to see a movie that they are interested in).

Argo F&ck yourself! :D

Argo is great, very realistic not some superman actions in it, just normal inguniuty, lot of hope and luck....one thing I am not sure whether it was really that close as it was portreyed at the end with the cars chasing plane on runway or it is just Hollywood...

I'd love some suggestions to add to my Netflix queue that have been released recently. Saw Paul last weekend, which was all right.

Hollywood.

I see movies in the theater just about every Friday at a matinee. Recently I've seen:

Argo
Cloud Atlas
Flight

I'm going to see the new Bond tomorrow.

Saw Looper on a whim, didn't really know anything about it. Good movie, cool ideas, good acting- I don't think the actual premise of the film was explored as well as it could have been; it sort of wound up going off in left field by the end. But it was engaging. It's the sort of movie that works well enough when you're watching it but after you start to go, "Hey, wait a minute..." :D

Liked Looper, even with the hated Bruce Willis. If you can put aside all the issues with time travel you'll enjoy the movie.

Skyfall - Excellent!! I absolutely love Daniel Craig as Bond and this is the best story he's had to work with. Won't get too much into it as I know it is still releasing, but if you like Bond at all, go see Skyfall.

Looper was good we saw that. Celebration Day was the last film we saw out. That was great!

Tonight is Skyfall. Very much looking forward to it. :)

I loved District 9 as well...one of the best Sci Fi flicks of the last 10 years, IMO.

District 9 was unbelievably good, light years ahead of that expensive turd Avatar.

Count me in with the District 9 fans.

Took the kids to Wreck It Ralph last weekend, they all loved it.

Just Netflixed Cabin in the Woods last night. That was a hoot.

Still wanting to see Loopers before it disappears off the big screens.

Saw Argo and Looper.

Both very fine. (And very different.)

One I have mixed feeling about: Hugo.

Wonderful acting and effects. However, it's too childlike (childish?) for adults, too adult in outlook for children.

Cloud Atlas just got rated the worst movie of the year by Time magazine, and that was a list that included 'What To Expect When You're Expecting."

Yikes.

I saw "Life of Pi" in 3D last night. One of the best film adaptations of a book I've ever seen! I loved the book when I read it about 5 or 6 years ago and you know how it usually is when somebody makes a book you loved into a movie, but I was surprisingly impressed. Highly recommended!

Time Magazine is so incredibly full of shit - and I've stopped considering them a proper conduit for modern day news and journalism log ago. If you want a spoon fed plot with lots of explosions and tits - like most of the American viewing audience - then Cloud Atlas won't fill your cup. It's a very cerebral movie - with tons of details and layers that weave amongst multiple plot lines that surround themes of humanity, balance and effect. Easily in my top 10 for sure - but, as always, YMMV. It will become a cult classic - - -

Hugo looked terrible from the previews. I saw some of it when it came out - looked like it was unwatchable. Reminded me of that Pinnochio movie that was a flop - why does anyone think people want movies like that?

Maybe I should wait a week for this, but I'm not gonna. We have Dead End Kids: Little Tough Guy; Take Shelter (because I LOVED Michael Shannon in The Missing Person); and The Business of Strangers (Stockard Channing) to watch this weekend.

We had a ton of those dvrd too. I deleted all but 3 to make room for other stuff. I checked a couple of weeks ago and it's now not on RTV in our area. replaced with Offbeat Cinema, which is ok but not nearly as much fun as Wolfman Mac.
