Sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar passes away at 92

Pandit Ravi Shankar, the most known contemporary Indian musician, passed away in San Diego city of United States on Tuesday evening.

The sitar maestro, aged 92, had been under treatment for last one week. He was hospitalised last Thursday after he complained of breathing difficulties.

For nearly three decades, ever since his first tour of the United States and Europe in the 1956-57 season, Ravi Shankar has served as India's unofficial ambassador for music.

The music doyen was awarded India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna in 1999. He also received three Grammy Awards.

Sad to hear. I had the extreme privilege of seeing him perform as part of George Harrison's 1974 tour.

I heard him live at Woodstock (I won't pretend that I actually saw him:lol). A tremendous influence on not just George H., but many others as well, including my friend Aldo, the real voice of Le Orme. RIP

He lived a good, long life. Thanks to the Beatles I'd never know what a Sitar sounded like. I don't have any CDs of Ravi but I have one from his daughter Anoushka. I'm not a big fan of Indian music but I have more than a healthy respect and admiration for it. Ravi needs to be in the fucking R&RHOF. Ravi really influenced a lot of rock musicians.

RIP

A sad way to start the day.Ravi Shankar was my introduction to Indian classical music. He lived a long rewarding life and was a great spokesman and ambassador for(of) Indian music.

He was a musician whose influence on Western music and musicians was immeasurable. He recorded his most recent cd(The Living Room Sessions Vol.1) last year at the age of 91.I'll listen to that cd now.

RIP Ravi Shankar.

Yeah just saw this on the morning news. Sad indeed. I have several albums by him. All very transendent and hypnotic. RIP Ravi.

RIP. I'm glad to have had the opportunity to see him about five years ago. Very skilled at that age.

Someone asked this on another board, but I thought someone here might know.

Did Shankar and Brubeck ever play together?

A quick Google search turns up one (not particularly reliable looking) source that suggests they jammed when Brubeck visited India in 1958, but I was wondering if there was anything more definite.

Shankar's performance at Woodstock remains one of the most jaw dropping musical events ever captured on film.
