The release of that new deluxe box set which is a best of compilation of Rolling Stones material has me thinking about picking up copies of the 60s era Stones releases. However, I noticed that there are different US and UK versions of the 60s stuff with different tracks. Can anyone help guide me which versions are the one to pick up? Thanks in advance.

I think it's just easier to get the US releases. Although I'm sure many will disagree.

I've been on a Stones kick lately......I picked up the US versions of Let It Bleed, Exile on Main St., Sticky Fingers, and I think one of the first CD versions of Beggar's Banquet--the one with the urinal cover. Those, and Get Yer Ya Ya's Out, represent the peak, IMO.

Of the ones that are available in both U.S. and U.K. track listings, I would go with the U.S. version of Out of Our Heads (including "Play with Fire" and "Spider and the Fly"). The U.K. version of Aftermath gives you 14 songs vs. only 11 on the U.S. version, but the latter has "Paint It Black." The U.K version of Between the Buttons includes the splendid "Back Street Girl" and the raucously psychedelicized "Please Go Home," but again, you get more big hits on the U.S. version ("Ruby Tuesday" and "Let's Spend the Night Together"). For those two I recommend getting the U.K. versions and also buying a greatest hits album (maybe Through the Past Darkly) to cover the singles that were added to the U.S. editions.

Good Lord, I'm glad to finally be over my latest Stone's kick. It started with the Keith Richards book. That led to a Jagger book, A Wood book and finally the Wyman book, Stone Alone. The Wyman book nearly killed me. All the while playing my old smelly Stone's vinyl. I'm Stoned out for awhile.

Is there a pattern I can follow so I can collect all The Rolling Stones songs from that era without overlapping over simular CDs?

It's impossible to get a complete collection on CD without overlapping. In particular Flowers and More Hot Rocks contain tracks not found anywhere else but also overlap heavily with other albums. My own solution was to buy all of the studio albums (including the U.S. Out of Our Heads and U.K. Aftermath) plus Flowers and Singles Collection, and to download the rare More Hot Rocks tracks from iTunes. Flowers could also be replaced by just downloading the needed tracks; I just happen to like it as an album for nostalgic reasons.

I bought the mp3's off Amazon, and burned my own versions of the albums. Not only was it cheaper than buying the actual CD's, but I was able to make my own "deluxe/legacy edition" of each of the UK albums, using the tracks that appeared only on the US albums as bonus tracks. For instance, my version of their second album combines all the material that appeared on 12x5 (the second US album), The Rolling Stones No. 2 (the second UK album) and The Rolling Stones, Now! (the third US album, which had some, but not all, of the tracks from Rolling Stones No. 2 that hadn't been on 12x5). I think I included both versions of Time Is On My Side, as well. Since The Rolling Stones No. 2 isn't part of the current CD release series, I had to grab some of the songs off the Hot Rocks compilations, I think.
Meanwhile, my "Between The Buttons...Plus" CD has the entire UK album, plus a gaggle of songs that were on the US only Flowers compilation (including the brilliant Ride On Baby, which I don't think has ever been issued anywhere except on Flowers). Again, I had to go to one of the compilations (I forget which one) to get Who's Driving Your Plane, the B-side of Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing In The Shadows. For whichever reason, Who's Driving Your Plane was left off Flowers, a stupid decision, I think, since Flowers includes two songs (Let's Spend The Night Together and Ruby Tuesday) that were included on the US version of Between The Buttons just a few months earlier.
I guess it should come as no surprise that a record company run by the likes of Allen Klein would try to rip off record buyers with such a crummy reissue campaign. Some of those albums weren't even a half hour long, and they've been kept that way in their present CD incarnations! What an asshole!!!!

Well, I've always thought of TRS more of a song band, especially in the 60's... some I'm quite content with Hot Rocks (I find More Hot Rocks very forgettable)
But in the 70's, I went for two compilations as well: Made In The Shade and Sucking In The 70's >> it's got everything I need from that decade... nothing from the 80 or 90's, though, thanks... ;)

There's a box I have called The London Years. Every single and b-side from the 60s. I think it's gotten a little pricey so you might want to see out used copies. The only issue with it is you get single mixes of some longer songs like Can't Always Get and Sympathy for the Devil. But by the time you get to that era, you need to get the CDs (starting with Beggars Banquet). I have a UK copy of Between the Buttons and it is sublime.

With the exception of Beggars Banquet, my favorite Stones records are the debut through Aftermath, mostly the UK versions. I'm not a completist so can live without the comps.

I only recently (last year?) heard the UK edition of Between The Buttons, and was astonished at how much better the songs flow. I can't listen to the US version anymore.
That's my fav LP, but Satanic Majesties, Beggar's Banquest & Jamming With Edward all get top nods too.

The Stones are one of those big groups that I know a bunch of their songs but I only have "Thru the Past, Darkly". A great compilation but my collection has a serious hole in it that needs to be fixed. I am looking for collection that spans their career but I don't wanted, b sides, 12 inches, unreleased stuff etc. Recommendations?

BillI would agree, but Flowers overlaps some with the U.S versions of Aftermath and Between The Buttons. I don't mind cause it's my favorite Stone songs that overlap.
