John Zorn - A Dreamers Christmas. Zorn doesn't play, but many of his friends are here - Trevor Dunn, Mike Patton, Cyro Baptista, Marc Ribot, Jamie Saft, Joey Baron, Kenny Wollesen

I think the subtext is rapidly becoming text.

Thanks so much for posting this. Strangely I've never heard this before. It's a great song. I've heard many times that Christmas is the time of the year when more suicides happen. It can be a very emotional time of year thinking back on loved ones gone and feeling lonely can really depress someone. My parents always made Christmas a magical wonderful time of year when we were kids and I miss them deeply at this time of the year, but my memories keep them alive in me. I knew a couple who had lost a son near Christmas and it hurt every year to them thinking about it. I remember the mother telling me how they would take the tree down the day after Christmas every year.

For fans of Moon Safari - Simon Åkesson put together a youtube playlist of all his various Christmas related recordings:

    https://www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...BGwb2u1QIe1YA-

Some ACappella, some with Accent, some choir, couple instrumentals. All really good. I downloaded the songs and also added this other one he missed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hxqgzdkc1k

It makes a really nice 46 minute Christmas Disc.

One of my wife's favorite seasonal albums is Yo-Yo Ma's Songs Of Joy And Peace.
It is really nice, without being maudlin.

The way the Flyers are going this year they may need him on the ice.

Sorry, long suffering Isle fan here just happy not to be looking up at the rest of the league this year.

Back on target, I never heard of 'Fairytale of New York' before. It's fantastic! Definitely not your traditional Christmas tune. Excellently played with some painful lyrics.

Here is a link giving insights and interviews of the Pogues about the song. Its long but worth it.

If you like the darker, moodier, more minor-key approach to Christmas/winter themed music, I must insist that you check out Nox Arcana if you don't already know them:

    https://noxarcana.bandcamp.com/

In this case, particularly the albums Winter's Knight, Winter's Eve, Winter's Majesty and Ebonshire.

George Winston - December is pretty nice also.

Hey Folks.....here's a question for ya..... Do you "run out" of Christmas spirit Before Christmas actually comes?

Really got into it the day after Thanksgiving.....put up the outdoor lights....a few days later, the tree went up.....indoor decorations up by Dec 1.....and the 5+ hour Holiday playlist in iTunes going every morning for my workout......ran out of gas last week.....but never got tired of the playlist....I'm retired and don't go retail shopping so I'm not saturated with the commercialism....I'm getting a "few" holiday greeting cards (a rarity nowdays) and a few old friends are calling to chat.....funny....it happens almost every year.....except I Never burn out on the music or the classic movies for the season.....well, maybe Mr. Hanky The Christmas Poo is a little old but Cindy-Loo-Poo who is just nearly Two saves the day...

Never burn out but never start as early as you. No Christmas music until December. Christmas movies start then too. Even some Lifetime or Hallmark movies have crept in as I've gotten older. Everything from the old classics and the newer, not always so wholesome ones too. The tree doesn't go up until Christmas Eve but my kids have been at me the last couple of years to put it up a little earlier. Tonight it is going up. No more going to sleep at 4 AM and having them get up at 6:00. Everything has to stay up for Little Christmas but most everyone else is tired of it by then. Last year I was still listening to Christmas music thru January. Pentatonix was like ear candy to me. After that I was very ready to get back to prog, classical, jazz...

A favorite! Except for TSO, I don't really have anything in the prog or rock realm for Christmas. All sorts of stuff the crooners, orchestral, jazz, new age and a bunch of pop/rock.

I try to mix in some Christmas music with other music when I'm in the mood to not get overwhelmed with it. My favorite is Bach's Christmas Oratorio which I play a few times during the season. It's easy to get burned out on Christmas early since it seems to go on for so long these days.

Sounds like someone got a Casio for Christmas.

As a general rule I really don't care for Christmas music, but I dig Jethro Tull. Listening to the JT Christmas Album for the first time. It's bouncy, happy, and flutey. I like it. Hey Mikey!

Time to bring back this thread. Just received IQ's Dark Christmas on Vinyl for 2019.....they stated they will NOT re release the CD version to keep it special so now your only option is to buy the Vinyl. What and EXCELLENT EP it is too!

Found a curious title on Amazon this past weekend. The Monkees Christmas Party.....released in 2018. Some vocals from the Late Davy Jones & Peter Tork included. Need to investigate further but enjoyed Dolenz singing McCartney's Wonderful Christmastime.

Broke down and bought Burl Ives.....

some Baroque CD's too......Will start tonight while decorating the Tree. Just finished the outdoor display this afternoon.

I was at the grocery store and they were inflicting an autotune remake of that horrible McCartney Christmas song on us, as though the original wasn't already bad enough.
