I'm in for the deluxe CD!
Who is Squid?
Dave Kerzner, whose PE name is Squids. He played keyboards on and produced the Sound of Contact album. He also runs one of the premier keyboard sample companies, which gives him special access to many of the top Prog musicians in the world. My take on him is that he is a very real, likeable guy who has a major passion for music and some great chops as well. He's also a major gear geek. He has probably the best collection of vintage analogue keyboards on the planet.
Dropping 35.00 for the Deluxe version of his first solo CD was a no-brainer for me.
Have pledged!

I saw that! Haha. Thanks Henry. I hope you enjoy it!
Saw this early this morning: http://www.prog-sphere.com/news/keit...w-world-album/
The track Keith is playing a Moog solo on is for the Deluxe Edition and at the moment it's an instrumental with me playing Hammond (pretty cool man!!). For those that don't know, I made a Deluxe Extended 2 CD version of my album because I'm doing the album independently and I've used Kickstarter.com to "crowd fund" it which I think is a good way to go for a lot of unsigned Prog artists IMO. I think it's an ideal genre for being able to provide the "extra bonus tracks and extended versions" because Prog artists just can't help doing a long guitar or keyboard solo outro or a multi-part song!
Watch the video on this page and I explain plus you can listen to audio clips that feature Steve Hackett and others (not Keith yet though). https://www.kickstarter.com/projects...y-dave-kerzner
Thanks!
Dave (aka Squids)

Tarkus is great! His honky tonky not so much. Will there be covers on the album?
I'm in for a signed Dee-luxe Edition.
Make sure you write me a damn sincere love letter for that extra $20 Squids!

"MARKLAR!"
No covers on THIS album but I do have a whole bunch of covers coming with my Sonic Elements project and Keith is featured on a few things. One of them is Tarkus vs. YYZ with Keith, myself, Steve Hackett, Billy Sherwood, Francis Dunnery, Alistair Greene and Neil Peart Drums (Neil playing drums but from a sample session I did with him for my sound company Sonic Reality). It's sort of like a mash up at least in the beginning. A total progged out version of YYZ basically.
It's funny. To me if something suffered from certain 80s production that didn't stand the test of time (sparkly DX7 sounds or drum machines or over processed mushy snares) then it can really benefit from a modern production revisit... and while I can't say much at the moment I AM doing that with some artists. If an album sounded timeless from the 70s that's a different story. One has to be careful not to replace KILLER sounds of vintage instruments with mediocre modern digital sounds otherwise it'll really come out second rate and possibly pointless. It all depends on what I hear in it. An album like Dark Side of the Moon I think is perfect as it is. Still sounds amazing today and it doesn't scream out for any improvement or anything... yet, I DO hear all sorts of ways to approach those songs with a modern angle too because the core of them is so strong and inspiring. For example, this is a snippet from my version of "Us & Them" that I'm doing with David Longdon of Big Big Train. His vocals are really powerful for it but we're saving the sharing of that until release. However, you can hear the end of the track in a work in progress mock up here: https://soundcloud.com/sonicelements/squids-clip-1-2014 (that's what that is! You can hear the Pink Floyd backing vocalists doing the "aahs" at the beginning which is kind of a giveaway). I did a similar approach to the production and sounds on this as I did on "Dimensionaut" (Sound of Contact) which itself is kind of a hybrid of classic sounds and a modern sound.
So, anyway, it depends on the song(s). If I hear how it can be done and I have the time, budget and resources available to do it I really enjoy the challenge. That said, I definitely like to balance my time working on covers with writing new tunes.
What did you feel was lacking in the original version of Us and them? Ive always loved that track.
Nothing. As I said, to me Dark Side of the Moon is perfect as it is. No need for improvement. But the songs themselves are so strong that they do lend themselves to potential creative interpretation. So that way it has an alternate reality that works on its own too, even if the original is absolutely fantastic as it is. I'll give you an example. Years ago when I played in Kevin Gilbert's band Thud we did a cover of Led Zeppelin's Kashmir. Now the original is so iconic with that monster Bonham beat and Jimmy's electric guitar riff that you'd think that any cover version of it would have to be just like that (but probably worse at it because the original version sounds massive and perfect as it is). But, if you step outside of the arrangement you're used to and approach it differently it's possible to do something like this which we did. Now not everyone likes it and the original but it was kind of "hit" in LA back then and generally I was surprised how many people liked it despite it not having that same slow groove electric guitar riff thing as the original!
Hey, this made front page news on Prog mag today! http://prog.teamrock.com/news/2014-0...-kerzner-album
Btw, if any of you are members of progarchives or other forums, blogs, groups etc. and want share that link around I appreciate it. Let me know if you do and I'll put you on a list of people I'm going to give a 'rock opera' song download to even if you didn't back the album. Thanks!
