You mean, like, as opposed to a few thousand metal artists who can't perform their craft without a fucking fuzz-box or a distortion unit?

True, but several thousand and one wrongs don't make a right.

Is tuna a kind of fish, or a kind of chicken? I mean, they call it "chicken of the sea"?

I think you're confusing Britney with Jessica Simpson.

    Easy mistake to make.

Not really true. Yes there are a lot of what you describe above, but there also some of them who actually have talent and can sing and write. Pink is an artist that comes to mind. Katey Perry is another one too. They both sing live on stage and do it very well.

    Katy Perry's singing = yelling

I don't think she is very good.

I knew they were separate blonde bimbos but I figured they were fungible.

I don't think that's a fair comparison. Most of those guys do have talent and they work very hard to do what they do, even if the result is sometimes cheesy or predictable (not unlike a fair amount of prog I like). The hairy distortion gives them the sound they want but give those guys an acoustic guitar and they'll still shred the same way.

Or worse, a few thousand metal vocalists who can't do anything except a bad Cookie Monster impression.

I'm probably one of the few remaining fans of metal (other than those of us into prog rock) who don't have any desire whatsoever to explore the so-called 'hardcore' neck of the woods for this very reason. 'Clean' vocals for me, thanks.

Would Britney Spears have made it without makeup?

The purpose was really to emphasize how silly her producer sounds while he makes excuses for her. Of course, her inability to hold a tune without technological assistance is a given. In regards to your other point however, yes, I have heard plenty of people sing naked, without any tricks or tools and completely on key and in pitch. It used to be the standard.

I cannot believe I am still following this thread after being away for a week. But, Katy Perry CANNOT sing. She's awful. My kids are into pop and any time I've seen live footage of her, she's been terribly out of tune with a shaky range, at best.

She looks great, though, and doesn't take herself too seriously, which is a bit refreshing. But she couldn't carry a tune in a bucket.

Replace Katy Perry with Taylor Swift and the above paragraph is still true Well, apart from the "looks great" and "doesn't take herself seriously" parts.

Or at least the price of admission. Nowadays boning the producer suffices (hello Pia!)
