sElf - Super Fake Nice [EP]

great new collection of tunes from Matt Mahaffey aka sElf, and the 1st thing to come out beyond a single or 2, in nearly a decade.

"Hey Hipster" in particular I love in many ways. He's actually on Jimmy Kimmel Live tonight in fact.

I just discovered these guys from Finland. Looks like they have quite a few albums out already, but never heard of them before. This track is from their latest album, "Pisara Ja Lammas 2" released this year. Incredibly, it is their 12th studio album.

These are all supposed to be "prog," right?

they all could be "good" but given that many albums that are "prog" aren't "good," and many albums that aren't "prog" are "good," the answer to your question is big emphatic no, they all are not necessarily supposed to be "prog."

Yup, but not as much as that new Yes record.

    A couple:

"[...] things that we never dreamed of doing in Crimson or in any band that I've been in," - Tony Levin speaking of SGM

That Stop Motion Orchestra album is lovely and that ^ tune is my favourite. Chronometers-era Muffins vibe.

That Stop Motion is really rather excellent, I'm clearly in tune with Scrotum and Kavus' reco's

I saw Hyrrokkin a couple of years ago in tiny bar in Columbus supporting Many Arms, they were really good. Reminds me of Zevious.

I blame Wynton, what was the question?

Many Arms themselves are an astounding band (and that Tzadik release of theirs espec). The whole axis with them, Zevious, Dysrhythmia et al. is really at the top of the deal.

It was bizarre seeing those two bands in a Chinese restuarant with all the dials turned up to 11 and about 6 of us watching them. Really great bands. Zevious are monstrously good, they were one of the highlights of Cuneifest for me, tore the place up.

Listening to Behold ... The Arctopus right now, man are the fast and heavy.

Yes it does. Fits into that whole 'sophisticated progressive pop' thing that has me giving the new Knifeworld so many spins!!

Because no one actually knows what the hell it is in the first place. So why dictate terms of that stupid "p" word to begin with?

of course, and so does everyone else...

but no two are exactly the same
Why is it whenever someone mentions an artist that was clearly progressive (yet not the Symph weenie definition of Prog) do certain people feel compelled to snort "thats not Prog" like a whiny 5th grader?

Thankfully, perhaps - yet still a curse of words.

My fifty cents: THE SHAGGS. Even the punters don't/can't "get it", so we're all in with the big crowd and their relation to, say, "Fracture" or "Sound Chaser".

Quiet and simple music doesn't have to be stupid
