I would presume that the Huddersfield concert will be broadcast by the BBC (since they usually cover this festival).
Speaking of modern classical music : Tim Hodgkinson has released an excellent new CD of ensemble music : Onsets. If you liked Pragma, or Sketch of now, if you're into spectral music, specifically of the Iancu Dumitrescu persuasion, this is for you.

"I can honestly say i haven’t heard anything as startlingly original as these five pieces in quite some time, & in a way it feels as though i’ve only begun to scratch the surface of them. But what a surface! Hodgkinson’s textures are fiercely elemental, coalescing in & out of gestural outbursts. In "Ulaarar", they contribute to a pervading undercurrent of violent aggression, exploding as pitches that are first focussed upon & then massively iterated, loud & often. By contrast in "Amhas/Nirriti", in conjunction with electronic sound the instrumental textures form a dense amorphous fog, acting in stark contrast to the diverse soloistic episodes with which it alternates. Most striking of all, though, is "Attaot", a piece seeking to evoke “virtual space-time continua that have a transformative movement of their own irrespective of the material used to evoke them”. Here, textures evolve & interweave with great subtlety, formed from tappings over a static sound field, from an agglomeration of embouchure noises (with & without pitch), & from acoustic sounds treated & assembled into amazing electronic outbursts that interact seamlessly with the ensemble. Passing through passages of pure euphoria &, later, hinting at a leftfield kind of ritual, "Attaot" perhaps epitomises the astonishing unchecked invention on display in all five works on this disc. Anyone doubting the capacity for originality in contemporary music should spend time with Tim Hodgkinson’s music & hear what’s actually possible. Outstanding. "
Chris Cutler has revealed some details of the upcoming event:
http://www.cloudsandclocks.net/inter...nterview2.htmlIt would have been more than I could manage - or anyone could finance - to present a full cross-section of Lindsay's work so, in the end, I opted to reconstitute the four main groups that had performed her compositions, Henry Cow, Music for Films, News from Babel and Oh Moscow - because that was practical and could be achieved with an ensemble of 12. By very good luck David Jones at Serious was prepared to take it on (no one else I approached would take the risk: 'nice idea' they said, 'but impossible to sell'). David said 'yes', taking a big chance on the back of old friendships, for which I am very grateful.
So. Fingers crossed. The four bands will play Lindsay's compositions in the order they were composed (HC, MFF, NFB, OM), and all members of the ensemble will play in each other's programmes as required. Lindsay played Bassoon, Soprano and Piano - and often all three at once on recordings - so it takes three people just to cover that. Michel Berckmans from Univers Zero will take the bassoon parts, Alfred Harth and Tim Hodgkinson the saxophones, Fred, Zeena and John the piano parts. It'll be fun.
Another bloke here who thinks the same.
For me it is going to be also the auspicious return to London Jazz Festival ten years after, with still vivid memories of a late autumn evening in Purcell Room, where I experienced the most transgressive (music) event of my whole life, witnessing the last coming of Ganelin Trio.
ReR is compiling a double CD with rare Lindsay stuff for the occasion.

The piano piece is amazing, fantastic playing and lots of humor.

It's completely different in France, where the national train service has a monopoly on transportation within France, and there are no equivalent coach services (unless operated by the SNCF as replacement for disrupted or discontinued lines). The only coaches that exist (Eurolines etc.) are for destinations abroad. It's really a little absurd, and sometimes makes it difficult to travel at reasonable prices.

Heads up to anyone still in London on the 23/11 - there is a Q&A with Robert Wyatt, held by Marcus Odair (hope I spelled it right) in the southbank center, for the launch of the book and accompanying double CD compilation on Domino records.
Busy with the logistics of this trip this week... Eurostar trains shouldn't be a problem from Brussels (whether that will be cheapor not is another pair of socks)...
Hotel rooms might just be a little more problematic, though >> finding hotel accomodations is one of the most painful search on the web, because of all thse vulture sites squatting the front pages
Can I ask those of you that are going to this "Barbecue feast" where they're staying at??
