I suggest Repertoire if you can find it.

If you mean the cardboard sleeve version, I would rate this the worst I've heard. I haven't heard the earlier Repertoire version (from circa 1994).
Since he asked about the best, I'd say just get the Vertigo CD, but a decent vinyl copy will smoke any CD I've come across.

Eroc hammered that thing with way too much compression for my taste. I am curious about the earlier Repertoire, however.
A friend made me a vinyl rip from his original Vertigo LP a while back and that's all I ever listen to now anyway. Never heard a CD version within a mile of it.

The card sleeve repertoire is also missing most of those little synth links between tracks...one of my favourite characteristics of the album.

The problem started with the Line edition. Apparently those synth bits were added later and just prior to cutting the vinyl. They were not on the Polygram tape that Line used and probably every CD version since then originates from that transfer except maybe the Vertigo. The Japanese versions used the Line CD but added the synth bits from vinyl.
The links are intact on the U.S. Vertigo edition.
