    hasn't Lenny been mentioned?

I know there are technically better Drummers but for my money Lenny has always been the most tasteful and musical
Why is it whenever someone mentions an artist that was clearly progressive (yet not the Symph weenie definition of Prog) do certain people feel compelled to snort "thats not Prog" like a whiny 5th grader?

I haven't noticed the arrogance you speak of. Now, he seems to be a bit on the OCD side, and sort of wears his emotions on his sleeve. But arrogance? I know he's mentioned "needing" to win drummer magazine polls, but those seemed to be in the context of promotion for (at that time) Dream Theater, not for his own ego. Every time he won one of those, it was good for a few magazine covers, and helped keep DT in the limelight. MP was all about promotion and fans.

I forget his name, but imo Morglbl's drummer (always wears a backwards baseball cap, and I've seen women gush all over him) is killer city! Right up there with all of his contemporaries afaic.

He strikes me as very arrogant, but most arrogant musicians get away with it when they have the skill to back it up, and I don't see why Portnoy shouldn't as well. Maybe it's something to do with being a drummer, because that's often a self-effacing job in a band: John Bonham is the other one I can think of who seemed very vain.

I think someone already mentioned him; right now AFAIC the nec plus ultra of drumming is by a certain Virgil Donati. His solo In This Life is awe inspiring.

Couldn't agree more, whether with RTF or solo (e.g. Astral Pirates)

It's likely the result of repressed libido due to assumed morals.

Portnoy has the skills to be sure

I think he also has a very dominant showmanship to him that could be mistaken for arrogance. I like his drumming alright, but he doesn't make my top 10

Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not his own facts.
In my opinion Portnoy is extremely boring. He is good, but boring. Like Simon Phillips.

Anyone mention Marco Minnemann's Normalizer project?
