Top 25 from these 8 nifty groups

    Cool, a list thread!

Okay, so I'm curious to see how your favorites stand out when compared to your other favorites from these 8 well established NIFTY GROUPS.

List your top 25 albums from this collection of bands:

Yes, Genesis, ELP, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Van der Graaf Generator, Gentle Giant.

It can be studio, live, whatever. Though preferably no solo albums.

NOTE: This thread is not about who makes up the NIFTY GROUPS. Just play with the hand I'm dealing out please.

... hated having to leave so many out! That was tough. If Hammill solo albums were allowed, The Silent Corner, In Camera and Over would all have been included. Likewise with Voyage Of The Acolyte and Fish Out Of Water.

You read right: no ELP (the first missed the cut by a hair), but then again there is some kind of trend in this thread...
Yup, some of you will jump at Supertramp as a Big X of prog...

I didn't list live albums, though.

Not sure I did that on purpose (maybe I read top 10 ) (all those bands managed to collectively release 73 studio albums )

Cozy, I know, I wasn't about to start a debate... just pointing out a small quirk of mine...

We'd have a hell of a music evening together though

BUT, to clarify, those are what I prefer NOW & what I listen to NOW. I own all the other stuff as well, and maybe 15 years ago a lot of your favs were also a lot of my favs, just not any more. Never been a huge crimson fan, never been a huge ELP fan, but there are albums I like, and still listen to just not enough to be top 25 material - Islands, itcotck, itwop, Pics at an Ex, BSS.
GG - Octopus, Three Friends, Free Hand
Genesis - only Nursery Cryme from the Gabriel years is something I occasionally play, I just can't stick his voice or his lyrics.
Pink Floyd - never liked anything after DSOTM, except Final Cut & Division Bell. I like Roger Waters various live versions of The Wall though but not the studio album or the film.
As for Yes though, I actually dislike most Yes albums, don't like JA's voice.
As for VdGG, never got into them at all...sounds bloody awful to me, and I can't stand PH's voice
Taab & PP, no thanks, nor do I like Minstrel or Stand Up or This Was. For me Benefit & Aqualung are the only good albums from the early period.
If PY had named them my 25 would have included at least 3 albums each from Camel, Alan Parsons & Mike Oldfield.

You see my prog favs have always been of the more melodic type rather than the jazzy, fusiony, freeform, avantgarde, experimental type.
For me if the voice is wrong I can't listen to it, which is why I gave up on DT so early, love the music, but I can't STAND LaBrie's voice.

Sure seems that way, even though they sold over 50,000,000 albums. Almost like it add cool points NOT to list them. Reminds me of back in the day when Yes fans or non-Big Six fans snubbed ELP as if to say, "I'm not a lemming. My taste is more sophisticated..."

I think, based on other threads I have read at PE over the years, that ELP doesn't have the staying power over the decades that the other larger bands have. I know that's my case. I rarely reach for an ELP album and it's been that way for over a decade.

NOTE: This thread is not about who makes up the Big 5. Just play with the hand I'm dealing out please.
But the title implies the big 5,6,7,8 etc so it was always going to fan a flame, especially when you list VDGG who where never even big 20. Now if you had listed Focus, Camel, Supertramp etc. that would have been more accurate! !

I grew up in prog circles & still mix with the same and VDGG are seldom discussed. There might be one VDGG per year here on PE which reflects their importance, popularity& influence!

I just plugged VDGG into the search engine and got 3 threads in the last 4 weeks
In the same period Focus had 1, Camel 2 and Supertramp 0

I can't help but laugh at the idea of a different opinion being described as 'more accurate'.

VDGG are wildly popular on PE. They are listed in 10 of the 13 submissions in this thread alone. They are an amazing band, one of the absolute top tier of prog, regardless of the constant negative opinions expressed by a tiny handful of forumers. You've made it clear you don't like them - but you're going to have to accept the fact that a LOT of people do. Phil Collins rules too, btw. Even more people love him.

Fortunately I had the brilliant foresight of knowing this would fan flames and requested people just stick to the 8 bands I specifically listed. At that stage it becomes less about interpretation and more about the ability or refusal to simply follow directions.
