I saw American Sniper this afternoon. It was a tremendous movie. I'd give it 9/10.

Watched a flic called Never Love A Stranger, a 1958 B crime movie. Noteworthy in that Steve McQueen has a supporting role. The movie itself is representative of B crime dramas of the time , although contains some deeper plot elements than the typical B. The lead turns to crime after it is discovered he is a jew and has to leave his orphanage. His now jewish identity plays in the plot. All the acting is competent but McQueen's future star-power shines. No phoned in performance, his trademark intensity is already on display. McQueen's presence and the films ideocincracies elevate this one to 7of 10. From Netflix dvd rental.

I saw it last night, and I agree with your assessment. Bradley Cooper was amazing. Fantastic performance. I wasn't as impressed with Sienna Miller, but she didn't take away from the film. Very powerful ending, too.

I watched Men, Women & Children, a movie about what can happen to people who use texting and/or internet unwisely. There were a lot of characters to keep track of, all of whom were connected by either kids knowing other kids, or parents knowing other parents. And it wasn't always the kids who got themselves into trouble by way of the technology. Some of the parents were unbelievable fuck-ups. The movie was entertaining and insightful. The only drawback, besides keeping track of the characters (some of which looked a lot alike), was several instances where people were texting but not speaking. The text may have been legible on a big movie screen, but it is hard to read on a television. And the only sound at the time was the movie's sleep-inducing score, much of which seemed to be a cross between bad new age music and porn film music. It is not one of those "internet is inherently evil" kind of movies, and is worth watching, not just by people like me, who grew up before there was internet or cell phones, but for younger people who might grasp how the technology can desensitize us and affect (not always negatively) the way we communicate with one another.

Also watching season 2 of Justified.

Watched the doc, Finding Vivian Maier, about an unknown, recluse photographer in Chicago. It was excellent.

Also caught this live action film, taken from the anime: Space Battleship Yamoto, which was fantasy SF.

Watched Lucy last night. Slick, empty , fluff , but entertaining. 7 of 10. Actually calling it empty isn't fair. There were some cool bits, I liked the cuts of cheetahs stalking prey as the Chinese mob closes in at the beginning. That and some other nicely done bits kept this from being just another cgi action fest.

The Zero Theorem - futuristic Terry Gilliam movie. Interesting and entertaining. May give this a second viewing.

A Walk Among The Tombstones - decent detective-crime-action flick with Liam Neeson as the ex-cop private investigator.

    Silent Partner (1978)

Very good bank robbery caper starring Elliot Gould and Christopher Plummer as the the baddie.

Interesting film & worth a watch if you like 70s crime dramas.

I liked this one also, although I can't remember a damn thing about it.

Do you have movie amnesia, too? If I didn't still have the DVD in the house, I wouldn't remember the name of the movie I saw last. And all movies star what's-his-name or what's-her-name. I'm pretty good at remembering things about music, songs, bands, and albums, though, so it seems to be a selective amnesia. Turn off your mind, relax and float downstream...

yeah, I've seen so many great great movies and very few seem to stick with me like a Casablanca
Why is it whenever someone mentions an artist that was clearly progressive (yet not the Symph weenie definition of Prog) do certain people feel compelled to snort "thats not Prog" like a whiny 5th grader?

Yeah, I liked Lucy too, a lot of people slammed it, but I had fun.

Predestination--Ethan Hawke in a SF time traveling movie, it's bizarre like the movie Enemy, but still makes sense, and you have to think somewhat while watching it.
Hawke tries to help out this person he meets in a bar.

I enjoyed Lucy in brainless sort of way.

Predestination was pretty good though the twists were a bit obvious by halfway through.

Birdman is the greatest Dark Comedy film ever made.
I don't like much modern music, but there are some great films being made.
I wish music would be as innovative as the film industry has become.

Just watched "Whiplash" and loved it. Fingers crossed for J.K. Simmons to win the Oscar for that performance. Outstanding.

Not sure if your pro or con super hero but I for one consider the super hero movies dead to me. At the start of the craze they were fun , but to much of a good thing turns it bad. I will not watch movies where the hero wears his underwear outside his pants. Reminds me of pro wrestling ,which I also avoid at all costs.

Speaking of Super hero movies, caught two at home trying to stay out of the deep freeze-

    "The Amazing Spiderman 2" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1872181/?ref_=nv_sr_1
Wow, was this bad. Jamie Foxx channeling Damon Wayons' "Blankman" type character along with really bad cgi scenery. And just when you thought it was over, there was like another hour. Too much lovey, dovey reminiscing sap in there too.

    "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1291150/?ref_=nv_sr_1
Wow, was this better than I imagined. Lots of action and suspence and Megan Fox. Was never a follower of the shelled heroes in the past but found this to be very entertaining.

Continuing our Jake Gyllenhaal film fest, having seen Prisoners and Enemy, we recently viewed End Of Watch. Possibly the best cop opera I have seen.

    Saving Mr. Banks

This movie was our flick of choice for Sunday Night Nachos and it was excellent (both the movie and the nachos ). Engaging film. Hanks played his role as "Walt" very well. The rest of the cast were superb. Great to hear the true backstory behind Mary Poppins. Never heard it before. Wasn't aware there was one, nor that it was based on a book.

Yeah, that look is pretty much gone. It's either armor or just spandex. Or in the case of Jennifer Lawrence in the last couple X-Men films, no underpants at all.
