American Hustle and Gravity I thought were very good but still overrated.

These are the only two that I have seen, and would have to agree. Both were good, but not sure that either are best picture worthy.

As someone who loves Tom Hanks, (named my dog "Wilson") I would like to see this movie and enjoy it. However, I'm having a lot of trouble with the concept of the film, since from what I've heard, the real story is nowhere near what is portrayed in the film. The crew actually wants to sue the shipping line.

The real Captain Phillips was no hero, more like a fool that never should have gotten his ship and crew into a situation where Somalian pirates could hijack them in the first place.

Do the crew members of the Maersk Alabama believe that Captain Phillips is a hero?

No, the majority of them do not believe that Captain Richard Phillips is a hero. In fact, due to the decisions made by Captain Phillips, 11 of the crew members have sued Maersk Line and the Waterman Steamship Corp. for nearly $50 million, citing "willful, wanton and conscious disregard for their safety." They believe that it is the Captain's recklessness that steered the Maersk Alabama into pirate infested waters. "All ships had been warned," says Chief Engineer Mike Perry, referring to a series of seven emails that had been sent to the Alabama by a private maritime security agency. The emails specifically warned of Somali pirate attacks in the area, stating, "...vessels should consider maintaining a distance of more than 600 nautical miles from Somalia coastline..." According to the Alabama's logs, the ship was only about 300 miles offshore. -CNN

Hmmm...very interesting. Hadn't heard that before.

    Well worth watching.
One of my favorite westerns. The long version with the newer score is the best.

Go see the film. Exactly what transpired in the movie.

    I might see it.

But if you read my link, there apparently was plenty that really happened that was papered over in the movie. Many of the crew reject the premise of the movie that Phillips was a hero.

Unless you're saying the movie does not depict the Tom Hanks character as a hero?

    Sorry, I couldn't resist.

But you need to see the whole film to become emotionally vested to the characters .

Then that finale really packs a satisfying wallop!

Machete Maidens Unleashed--doc about the Philippine exploitation industry, sort of fun to watch. I had no idea that their culture was that violent over there at that time.

Of course, that's a given! I was just teasing, Chris! Hopefully, I'll see that film at some point.

At halos walang Pinoy sa itong pelikula.

I'll have to watch this one. Pinoy film making still has a huge B-rate presence in the market. Lots of horror films, now, and many are rather well done. There is also a huge B-rate magical/fantasy genre in Filipino films. Lots of local-legend-oriented horror films. And, a pretty large soft-porn industry.

Yeah, it was quite original, I thought. I thought the kid who played Bradley Cooper's son was excellent.

I thought it was really cool telling three different interlocking stories. I thought it was well acted and an interesting plot.

I watched "The Butler" last night and thought it was really good. You know a film had an effect on you when you find yourself thinking about it the next day. It's easy for a white man like myself to forget how prevalent Jim Crow still was in this country well into the '60s. I was still a kid at the time and not really tuned in to what was going on outside of my little world. But ... wow. Powerful film!

Yup, great films. In fact I find “High Plains Drifter” to be such an uderrated classic, IMO the best of Clint's American westerns.

I love this movie, and yeah, awesome shootout. It's one of those films you are hoping has a strong ending to help complete the story, and this one totally delivers.

Interesting seeing Dumbledoor as one of the main vilians. He forgot his pointy hat and his wand for this movie. OK, he's the 2nd Dumbledoor, taking over in movie 3 from the late Richard Harris. I kept hearing his voice and realized I'd heard him before. And of course the credits showed it was actor Michael Gambon.

Watched a recent (2013) Western recently called "Sweetwater." Not up there with the classic Eastwood westerns, but a decent movie nonetheless. And they don't make a lot of westerns any more.

Speaking of Westerns and seeing all the fans of the genre here, you guys should check out the AMC TV series Hell on Wheels. It's very well done.

The guy who "The Wolf Of Wall Street" was based on was on Piers Morgan tonight. I thought it was a very interesting interview, although I have not seen the movie yet. I just caught it be accident flipping around channels.

saw an oldish Oscar winner last night for the first time

I avoided it thinking 'how can someone make a movie about a Nobel winning Physicist and it be anything but BOR-ING?!' ... plus I'm not a Crowe fan at all

well, I was wrong... A Beautiful Mind is a great movie

Why is it whenever someone mentions an artist that was clearly progressive (yet not the Symph weenie definition of Prog) do certain people feel compelled to snort "thats not Prog" like a whiny 5th grader?
