I don't know Cohen at all, but I've always liked Neil Young. "Everybody Knows this is Nowhere" is a great, great record.

Well it was The Beatles that turned me into a music fanatic and musician in the first place, so I'll always have room in my heart for well written pop. And within that realm, much of my favorite stuff just happens to be British.

Also, I'll say this: Though I know now that there was some good prog being made in the '80s, I wasn't aware of most of it at the time. In comparison to what else was out there (that I knew of), Nik Kershaw's stuff was fairly progressive. I like pop that has some harmonic intrigue going on and his off-the-beaten-path chord progressions and modulations scratched that itch for me.

    That's too bad.

The Beatles are a bit over-hyped but Rubber Soul through Abbey Road is really an amazing collection of art rock. I'd say at least give the 1967-1970 "blue" greatest hits album a spin.

Excluding classical, keeping to 1 per artist per decade (and not in order of quality):

    1950s

    Ella Fitzgerald, Gershwin Songbook

    Duke Ellington, Such Sweet Thunder

    Broadway Cast, My Fair Lady

    Mingus, Pithecanthropus Erectus

    Davis/Evans, Miles Ahead

    1960s

    Dylan, Blonde on Blonde

    The Band, The Band

Duke Ellington, ... and His Mother Called Him 'Bill'

    Nico, The Marble Index

    The Mothers, Uncle Meat

Does it matter that this waste of time is what makes a life for you?
