OK - I'll give it a go here (and perhaps some new entries to consider):

1970: Stray - s/t (if you have not heard this - it is quite revelatory)
1971: Micah - I'm Only One Man (a real obscurity and magnificent)
1972: Scorpions - Lonesome Crow (I think it's much more than a hard rock album, but what the heck)
    1973: Buffalo - Volcanic Rock (Australia's best)
1974: Scorpions - Fly to the Rainbow
    1975: Black Sabbath - Sabotage
1976: Judas Priest - Sad Wings of Destiny
1977: Judas Priest - Sin After Sin
1978: Judas Priest - Stained Class (I could easily go the first Van Halen here, but Stained Class is so good)
1979: Judas Priest - Unleashed in the East

1973 - Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (Pink Fairies - Kings Of Oblivion)

    1975 - Black Sabbath - Sabotage
    1976 - Rainbow - Rising
    1977 - Hawkwind - Quark, Strangeness & Charm (Motorhead - Motorhead)

    1978 - Van Halen

    What's with the abbreviations? 'Aeros'

"Made In England (AR) tied with Argus (WA)" - are you listing them from Arkansas and Washington?

I am not familiar with those abbreviations. Fleetwood Mac? Municipal River?

Troll? Pah… take a gander in the mirror, if you dare

    =============

Aerosmith was easy, but why do that abbreviation 'Aeros' when you're already almost done with their name?

    There does that S you, N? Or S I make it E?

I agree on the Stray and Micah being very good, however, I learned about (and purchased) these within the last 10 years. The albums that I selected, I grew up with, so the Stray and Micah were at a huge disadvantage. As for the Buffalo, it was a tie with "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" so I flipped a coin.

    1970- Deep Purple In Rock
    1971- Master Of Reality
    1972- Demons And Wizards
1973- Never Turn Your Back On A Friend
    1974- Quo
    1975- Physical Graffitti
    1976- Rainbow Rising
    1977- A Farewell To Kings
1978- Live And Dangerous ('Van Halen' as studio choice)
1979- Unleashed In The East because I had to have 'Rising' instead of 'Sad Wings...' ('Highway To Hell' as studio choice)
    1980- Iron Maiden

And this is without Aerosmith, UFO, Nazareth, Blue Oyster Cult etc. This is the era of hard rock I love, when the tunes were still there, before the overt posturing, shredding, growling and blast beats. 1976 and 1978 were very, very tough. 1979 I find a bit of a lull year...older bands either weren't active or putting out lesser material, and the newer bands weren't releasing records then, like Iron Maiden etc.

In the case of Stray, the debut is a great album, but they were on Transatlantic- more or less a folk label.

Yea, you'd almost think he didn't like Sabbath.

Yeah, looks pretty one dimensional in a way.

What can I say? That Sabbath catalog is easily amongst the most important music of the last 50 years, IMO. So when it comes to a list of just hard rock/metal, it's going to dominate because I feel strongly that those recordings are the best in that field most every year. I'd like to find room for Zeppelin but it just isn't possible. Houses Of The Holy comes closest. I could almost switch that out with Sabbath Bloody Sabbath but not quite. And then there is Physical Graffiti which I absolutely love, but pretty much nothing in the history of ever tops Sabotage.

Amen! Have you ever seen them live?
I've seen them live twice; and will again this summer. Unbelievably fantatic live. Each time with Ozzy. First time I saw them was the original line-up. Just don't ask me years or places, I've got no memory for gig details.

Yes, I have seen them live many times.

Between Sabbath and the Heaven and Hell project, I believe it has been 14 concerts total. Most recently I just saw them at Hollywood Bowl last month. It was very strong but Osbourne's vocals were better at Shoreline in Mountain View last summer, IMO.

First time I saw them was in '82 with Dio at the helm. Perhaps ironically, one of the very best shows I saw by them was when Neil Murray and Cozy Powell were in the band and Tony Martin was on vox. And probably the very best was Heaven and Hell on the 'Metal Masters' package tour a few years back. That lineup had been playing together again for a couple of years at that point and were so good it was absolutely ridiculous.

What do you think of the new boy on drums? I think he's brilliant, saw him with the band last year, when he did a 10 minute solo.

Luckily for Jeff, the Sabs didn't make an album in 74, 76 and 79, or he'd have looked like a fanboy

well, for 70's standards... Nowadays that kind of album wouldn't be far from most yearly top lists...

TE is my least favorite Sabs album, and doesn't make the list.

But I do think it's highly misunderstood. It's a merging of their sound with more commercial elements and Ozzy's Beatles influence perhaps at its most prominent. The songs are sensational for the most part. I think they intended it to be an international smash and it should have been. Tony's lead work on the album is completely off the charts. I enjoy Woodruffe's keyboard work as well. Still, after Sabotage, it's just a bit of a letdown and the overall sound is a bit misguided, IMO. They were completely producing themselves by that point. It might have been an album that could have benefitted from an outside Producer and a strong, alternate voice.
