I am also previewing an existing Pandora station called "Doom Metal" -- Workhorse, Candlemass, etc.

Arjen Lucassen always knows how to give the stereo a good workout.

Well in all fairness, Helter Skelter is a pretty terrible recording. It's one of the first victims of the Compression Wars.

Animals as Leaders or Blotted Science should give it a workout.

The Blotted Science album "The Animation of Entomology" should do the trick

    Seconding some Animals As Leaders.
    Also Meshuggah.

That's debatable. The mono version, especially, sounds pretty damned good to me and it's one of the heaviest songs ever recorded, IMO. Now, the pressing technology back then could have been better.

But, you did ask for something that would blow the doors off your stereo.

These two terms can be mutually exclusive...To answer the thread title:

Dimmu Borgir's "Death Cult Armageddon", "In Sorte Diaboli", and "Abrahadabra" are phenomenal --- and Im not even a fan of metal

Which is precisely why I wrote:

If you're looking for just one song:

    after listing some albums.

The Beatles? You consider that to be metal that will blow the doors off a stereo?

Okay, fair enough, each to his own.

Some people just seem to like being deliberately contrary. It's getting boring reading it, though.

To be blunt, I never considered much metal/hard rock to be an audiophile delight- Judas Priest's classic stuff sounds good but you know that already. I seem to remember liking the production on Montrose's early stuff...'Rock Candy' for instance I recall has a great drum sound. But as ever, the 'is this metal' debate will apply!

I think Winger's 'Pull' isn't a bad sounding record (aside from what sounds like a 'drum trigger', quite common then)- some heavier tracks on that like 'Blind Revolution Mad', which has a quiet start and then gets much heavier. It has a song on it called 'Junkyard Dog', BTW!

You know, Dream Theater has a lot of the earmarks you mention; dynamic changes, abrupt start/stop, etc. However, I don't know if any of their albums are uncompressed enough to qualify. After all, my favourite DT recording is XX, a DVD...

That's negated by the douchery of a band member.
