    What's the best recorded metal?

    Somebody recommend a metal album that'll blow the doors off my stereo.

    Not going to play that game, sorry mate. The exact sub-genre of metal -- of which there are 12,321 and counting -- is unimportant.

    Well, if you like what Steven Wilson does with the sound of Porcupine Tree, there's the Opeth albums he produced.

    Or just put on Zeppelin's "When the Levee Breaks" - that can still shake the foundations of any house.
    I don't like country music, but I don't mean to denigrate those who do. And for the people who like country music, denigrate means 'put down.'- Bob Newhart

    Judas Priest "Painkiller".
    "Henry Cow always wanted to push itself, so sometimes we would write music that we couldn't actually play – I found that very encouraging." - Lindsay Cooper, 1998
    "I have nothing to do with Endless River. Phew! This is not rocket science people, get a grip." - Roger Waters, 2014
    "I'm a collector. And I've always just seemed to collect personalities." - David Bowie, 1973

    Iron Maiden during the 80's. Or Judas Priest when they were working with Tom Allom.

    Sabotage.

    Extraordinary production with amazing dynamics. "The Writ" will test your system like well recorded classical.

    It is sufficiently defined on hundreds of webpages.

    Black Sabbath - Paranoid (Includes their 3 best songs ever IMO)
    NWOBHM: Iron Maiden - Powerslave
    and post-return of Bruce: Dance of Death
    German power metal: Helloween - Keeper of the Seven Keys - pt.1
    American thrash: Metallica - Kill 'Em All
    Doom (from the Swedish pioneers of doom): Candlemass - s/t
    Italian doom: Doomsword - Resound the Horn
    Sweeping, huge, majestic: Avanatasia - The Metal Opera Vols. I & II
    Retro/heavy rock: Graveyard - Lights Out

    Iron Maiden "Killers"

    Black Sabbath "Sabotage"

    Judas Priest "Unleashed in the East"

    If you're looking for just one song:

    Beatles "Helter Skelter"
    "The White Zone is for loading and unloading only. If you got to load or unload go to the White Zone!"

    Perhaps I should clarify. Sabs, Priest, Zep, Maiden etc. I'm already familiar with.

    I'm hoping for recommendations of something new I may not have heard.

    Sub-genres do matter, though, when asking for this type. There is progressive metal, melodic metal, etc., and they all have some heavy stuff. Do you just want straight forward hesher head-bangin' stuff that is just a constant drone of sound?

    Evergrey adds some progressive elements and has some cool riffs...

    No.

    I want something that is a workout for my stereo. That Evergrey stuff sounds like AM radio, sorry -- compressed into a constant slurry with zero dynamic range.

    No apology necessary -- it doesn't bother me if you don't like a suggestion.

    It's a crap shoot if you aren't going to give a sample of what you might be looking for.

    I recommend going to YouTube and doing searches there.

    I would get Closer to Doom by Bigelf. Analog fatness. Is it metal? Well, it's loud, doomy and sludgy, but better recorded than most stoner music.

    That's the problem -- I don't *know* what I'm looking for. To be clear, I'm not really looking for an album to fall in love with. I just want some loud, crunchy, dynamic, ballsy rock/HM for testing my stereo. Examples: I've been using Tool, Apocalyptica, Offspring, BLUE, etc. I'm sure there's lots of stuff out there I've never heard. Point me to some YT.

    Yes, this is a good suggestion. Some nice sonics in the YT videos. I guess I'd prefer something with more stops and starts. Stuff that roars out of the gate, then turns on a dime and bites you in the ass.

    I want a junkyard dog.

    Been doing that, but it's very hit-and-miss.

    So far I have found:
    * - Nightwish
    * - Suidakra
    * - Break of Reality
    * - Oomph!
    * - Megaherz
    and I'm still looking....

    Very nice!

    Unfortunately, there seems to be a weird inverse proportionality between how good a metal album is and how good it sounds. Most great metal/thrash albums sound like ass. OTOH, Bob Rock era Motley Crue albums sound awesome.
