I think you might be. In the tune I hear no similarities at all, a constant drive & beat yes, but surely having a permanent beat through a song is not ripping off another song with a permanent beat through it. Otherwise you could say ALL dance tracks rip each other off.

The second one does Enjoy the Silence nicely but then you discover when you hear the same vocalist do Toto's Africa that he doesn't really have a very strong vocals, which is fine depending on the song

Knowing he was dead by the time this was released it gave me the impression he knew he was dying. The music sounded sad and melancholic.
In the end I learned he was beaten up by some streetgang and died from it. So it was an unexpected dead.

When I think of synth pop the only band who comes to mind is Depeche Mode, who I'm not a really big fan of.

I'm a huge fan of dark synth stuff ala 80's horror movies. Carpenter Brut does this to perfection. (Thanks to Battema for this recommendation)
