Obviously it's clearly "not Krautrock" but I never really understood the link between say, Can, Amon Duul II, and Popol Vuh. They're all so different!
I've always assumed the only criteria was "being German"; same with the New German Cinema guys from the '70s - Fassbinder and Herzog have NOTHING in common but there is still a continuum even if it's only the fact that they have this post-WWII legacy inevitably informing the artwork. I myself heavily lean towards the electronic and repetitive side of "kraut"rock, but there are as many sides as their are bands, really. And a lot of my favorite things are from the '80s (Dieter Moebius and Conrad Schnitzler!) so I don't necessarily draw a distinction between decades, either.

The musical diversity whithin the kraut names are big
    How to define Kraut?
Only the first 2 Kraan albums are 'genuine' Kraut in my ears, later they added jazz, middle east, pop.

Looking through the video's you guy's post, as a quick way to find something I will assume you feel is "Good" music... and taking notes on several bands I have never heard of... I now have 11 I will research when I have time. I just wanted to say. in general I find I dislike much of the 80's techo pop electronica that came from both sides of the pond, so I did not expect much.... but some of this was actually good enough and the last bands show was funny enough that I can see the attraction. Won't be my normal listen.... but it this was fun, thanks for posting.
Of course, not being of the daily persuasion in this opinion laden public prog bathhouse, my diatribe of recent lucubration is perhaps as welcome as a rats teat. One often is forced to weigh the desire to flash judgment within against the effort required as well as the value this knowledge will be to the greater good of all mankind or whatever inhabits the current spa. At best, its a slippery slope.

I haven't heard those Kraftwerk albums in their entirety, but from what I have heard, I think I prefer Trans Europe Express to any of them.

This is the famous and famously GREAT, excellently recorded (for the time period) Radio Bremen radio broadcast from Gymnasium Leibniizplatz on September 21, 1971. 1/3rd of this originally appeared on the United Dairies lp release by Uli Trepte and Guru Guru, "Hot on Spot/Inbetween" and then 2/3rds of this previously appeared on the Spalax CD, "Live 1972 / Conny Plank Sessions 1974". But here, for the very, very first time is the entire show and from what sounds like a significantly better copy of the tapes. How do I know so much about the provenance of this? For the very same reason I am so enthusiastic about this - I wanted to release this; it's that great. This is three 20' long tracks: Der LSD Marsch, Bo Diddley and Spaceship. Now it's presented here in a cute little box with a poster and button and balloon (and a picture of the wrong version of the group on the cover - hey, you can't have it all, can you?). Highly recommended; the best live representation of the mighty Guru during their prime period and one of their best performances ever - as great or greater than some of the studio work of the same period.

I'm not sure what my top ten are, as I have at least forty that would be on that list, but someone mentioned Einsturzende Neubauten earlier and I'd just listened to an album by them that I like very much and fits within the general vein. I saw them on this tour.

Gee, thanks for the extensive andwer (I knew youwere an early Guru enthusiast too) >> Apparently, this dates more about Hinten than UFO, since two tracks are their second album
