"Turn Around" by Tempest is a real burner. Damn, Ollie Halsall was underrated!
Confirmed Bachelors: the dramedy hit of 1883...
Pretty much the first two RDM albums are full of demented, sensational hard rock riffs. But I suspect many would argue it wasn't until their third album where they really became a "prog" band.
Some obvious ones I haven't seen mentioned and which may all originate from bass:
Yes: Tempus Fugit
Yes: Machine Messiah (they should almost send Tony Iommi royalty checks for this one)
Yes: Gates Of Delirium (several and not least of all the greatest bass riff of all time at 10:20)
Yes - The Remembering ("Relayer" section)
VdGG=White Hammer
GG-The House the Street the Room
Amon duul 2-"Race from here to your ears" loosens my teeth
If you want to talk Amon Duul 2, then I love that doomy riffing on "Wolf City!"
Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world.
So many great ones...
Here are a few that come to mind instantly
Caravan - Memory Lane Hugh, For Richard, several great ones in Nine Feet Underground
Soft Machine - Nettle Bed
Asia - Sole Survivor
Black Sabbath - Supernaut, Sweet Leaf, Snowblind (and many others...)
Deep Purple - Ted the Mechanic, (I'll omit the obvious one!)
Listening to Ephemeral Sun's Harvest Aorta right now - just one massive riff after another
I don't like country music, but I don't mean to denigrate those who do. And for the people who like country music, denigrate means 'put down.'- Bob Newhart
Brighter Than A Thousand Suns...Iron Maiden
"Mainstreet" from Helmut Koellen's posthumous solo album, You Won't See Me. The real rocker song on that album, shoulda been a big anthem!
"and what music unites, man should not take apart"-Helmut Koellen
I guess I interpreted this thread as wanting hard rock riffs from bands for whom "hard riffs"are not considered a trademark.
21st Century Schizoid Man
Covered 'n' abused by dozens of heavy metal bands...
heat. of. the. moment.
there...
"hard rock riff from prog related band"
A very loose category, lots of room for interpretation and a huge catchment field of bands, so there are literally hundreds. But I'd probably cut it down to a few from either Uriah Heep, Wishbone Ash, Arena, Marillion or Porcupine Tree.
But for now I'll go with the Heep's Easy Livin'
Yes - City of Love .. from 90125 around the 2;20 mark
"Normal is just the average of extremes" - Gary Lessor
Probably something off Stomu Yamashta's GO by DiMeola.
Maybe something off John G. Perry's Sunset Wading.
Gong Shamal more than likely has a riff by Hillage in there somewhere.
Zazan's Mystery School must have some in there also.
