    L.A. Music Shops

    Hello fellow PE'ers.

Heading to Anaheim in a couple weeks. On my visit last year hit Amoebas, Freakbeat, CD Trader, Second Spin. Was hoping to try a couple of new places if time allows. Any suggestions? How about Rockaway Records or Rhino?

    Regards,
    Jon

Going to Amoeba beats just about anything. Their inventory changes a lot. Rockaway Records is a very nice, good-sized store in Silver Lake (which isn't far from Amoeba Hollywood). I'd definitely swing by there. They had a lot of used CDs and collectible vinyl last time I was there.

If you're staying in Ana-sleim (LOL), cruise down to Factory Records in Costa Mesa. Probably 15 minutes down the freeway. http://www.factoryrecordsshop.com A friend who lives in C.M. goes there regularly and knows the owner fairly well. The shop apparently stocks a lot of vinyl, discs AND tapes. Second Spin's CM location is close by, too, right off Harbor Blvd.

Then you can drive about 20-30 minutes up the coast and hit a bunch of places in Long Beach like Fingerprints, Bagatelle Records and a few others I've never had a chance to visit. Pretty close to Anaheim, though.

Hoping to meet you at Freakbeat, Jon! If you are on the West Side at all, this is a cool shop:

Amoeba is hard to beat. I go there at least 2 times a month.

Freak Beat is owned by a couple of guys I used to work with, so I'm a bit biased, but it also a great store.

If you make it to Burbank, Atomic Records is a great shop to add your list.

It was recently voted by LA Weekly as the number one record store in LA.

Thanks for the Atomic Records rec and the link. Have read about that one as well. It's just nice there are a few places still left for us to seek out. Going to Amoeba for sure.

IIRC, Rockaway in Silver Lake has some amazing titles. I saw several rather obscure prog records there that I hadn't previously seen at a bricks and mortar shop. The problem was that their prices were pretty high. I ended up walking out empty handed, which says a lot because I'm not exactly a cheapskate when it comes to buying vinyl.

Anyone here been to Rhino Records in Claremont? Curious to hear about their CD selection. Might have a chance to check it out but only want to if there is a decent amount of stock as it is a bit of a drive.

    Regards,
    Jon

By all means, take a trip to Rhino.

They have a quite large prog section. At least as of about 6 months ago they did.

Back from our trip to southern California. Great time and awesome weather! Sucks that there is still snow on the ground here. I guess that's why they call it the 'great white north' . Anyway, for those who care, I thought I would post my music purchases. Had a great time browsing the shops. Visited Amoleba, CD Trader, Freakbeat, SecondSpin (both locales), Rockaway Records, Bagatelle Records and Factory Records. Here it is (a mixture of new and used):

    Pathosray - Pathosray
    Pathosray - Sunless Skies
    Chicago - V, VI, VII
    Roxy Music - Stranded
    Kaipa - Vittjar
    Classix Nouveaux - Best Of
Yes - Going For the One
Orpahned Land - All Is One
The Reasoning - Adventures in Neverland
Spheric Universe Experience - The New Eve
Happy the Man - The Muse Awakens
    Clive Nolan - Alchemy
    Gentle Giant - Free Hand
    Devin Townsend Project - Deconstruction
Riverside - Anno Domini High Definition
    UK - Danger Money
    Sieges Even - Steps
Threshold - Extinct Intinct (special edition)
    Phideaux - Ghost Story, Chupacabras
Big Big Train - Goodbye to the Age of Steam, Far Skies Deep Time
    Depeche Mode - Delta Machine
    ELO - II
Nektar - The Dream Nebula, A Tab in the Ocean
The Flower Kings - Unfold the Future
    Amplifier - Echo Strfeet
    Circa - HQ
    King Crimson - Islands
    James Labrie - Impermanent Resonance
    Glass Hammer - Shadowlands
Hawkwind - In Search Of Space
    Black Mountain - Black Mountain
Uriah Heep - Wake the Sleeper
Supertramp - Brother Where You Bound
Coheed and Cambria - The Afterman Descension
    Donald Fagan - Sunken Condos
    Amorphis - Circle

    Regards,
    Jon

I once mentioned by same request Rhino Records in Claremont, which is appox. a half hour drive from Anaheim. I also previously mentioned that one of the owners is Ckuck Oken, Jr., the drummer of Djam Karet. So if it's PROG that you are looking for, this store is a must since IMO they have one of the best and few prog music sections of new and used anywhere that is left in the entire Los Angeles region. Good finds there! Oops! Didn't read the last posts! Sorry I was late on this one, but remember this for your next trip down.

Thanks for the info. I did want to go to Rhino. Two years in a row we have been down to southern Cal but have yet made it there. Hopefully next year.

    Regards,
    Jon
