Compact Disk brought high fidelity to the masses and audiophiles will never forgive it for that
"Can-utility..." has to be it for Genesis.
They pack, loikes, three songs into those 6 minutes.
Its not feckin' "Safety Dance" and that is for sure.
I have three:
Camel - Lady Fantasy
Marillion - Afraid of Sunlight
Galleon - Permanent Vacation
Camel: Mystic Queen
It just seems like the greatest progressive song ever in that it has both a cinematic and dream like quality that makes me think of the most beautiful girl and the most wonderful place you could imagine.
Transatlantic's Whirlwind...a song which fills a CD nearly to capacity.
"Well my son, life is like a beanstalk, isn't it?"--Dalai Lama
Genesis-- Unquiet Slumbers/Afterglow
Utopia-- The Ikon (if that's a "song"...)
PFM-- Out of the Roundabout
Renaissance-- Can You Understand
Transatlantic -- Duel With the Devil
Brian Wilson -- Surf's Up
If I ever had a prog radio program - like....grrrrr....Lino has - I would start the very first broadcast off with
Renaissance-- Can You Understand
Now that would be a fine beginning.
I grew up in the 70s, so Easy Money from KC and And You & I from Yes are two from my formative years.
Currently, my tops from the new generation are As the World from echolyn and Late Night Salvation from IZZ.
Easy: Thick As A Brick. Forever... !
Peace,
Alex
Though I can't possibly pick a favorite prog song, I think that's the one I'd choose to play for somebody (probably young) who has never heard or heard of prog. That or The Advent of Panurge. If I thought they had the attention span for it, I might choose Gates of Delirium.

Mike-progbear: that is wonderful! I'm checking more stuff from them out.

Wow that's a tough one. Supper's Ready, CTtE, South Side of the Sky, Gates. Tarkus etc... but i have to say the one that takes me into another place is Awaken.
Close to the Edge, followed by Gates, and Heart of the Sunrise.
Does Thick As A Brick count as a single song?
Otherwise, it's Cinema Show.
There is not a thing shabby about echolyn's "Memoirs From Between", no matter the sentiments of certain members of the band.
