No-one mentioning Mahavishnu Orchestra, especially the first edition with Jan Hammer and Jerry Goodman?

"Improvisation is not an excuse for musical laziness" - Fred Frith
"[...] things that we never dreamed of doing in Crimson or in any band that I've been in," - Tony Levin speaking of SGM
Wow, must have been the first time I've "inspired" a thread! Since it's not actually my thread, I can't really define what is edgy and aggressive. But I will say why I used the description. In the Weather Report thread, I mentioned why I'm not into them. They are a band that had great musicians, the playing and the musicianship, I'd never argue it was anything but great. Just not a style I prefer with fusion, its a tad mello and mild to my ears. For 70's era, I much prefer Mahavishnu and Return to Forever, that sort of "rocking" fusion. I don't care for the early RTF albums as they don't emphasize the rock element much. But from "7th Galaxy" on out, maybe my ultimate fusion act. And today there are so many great acts doing this sort of thing. I mentioned Ohm and KBB off the top of my head.
Other great ones have been mentioned, and here is my list, not in any order:
Planet X
Cab
Vital Tech Tones
Tribal Tech
Hiromi
Spaced Out
Aristocrats
Tunnels
Brand X
Uncle Moe's Space Ranch
Bruford
Electromagnets
Gambale Hamm Smith (GHS)
Gong (fusion era)
Jean-Luc Ponty
Niacin
One Shot
Ohmphrey
Simon Phillips
OK, I know I'm missing a bunch, and there are some I don't really call fusion, though they could be defined that way, like Kenso, the Dixie Dregs and Morglbl.
OK, I should have mentioned Bad Dog U, shame on me!
If you can find it, Machacek - Featuring Ourselves ( abstract logix download only ) mentioned already, but once more for emphasis
Conrad Schrenk - Save the Robots
Scott McGill's Handfarm
and even through there are vocals;
Thank You Scientist, just because

Nostalgia, you know, ain't what it used to be. Furthermore, they tells me, it never was.
“A Man Who Does Not Read Has No Appreciable Advantage Over the Man Who Cannot Read” - Mark Twain
Michael Schrieve - Two Doors The first half has Shawn Lane & Jonas Hellborg the second Bill Frisell & Wayne Horvitz 1st half much edgier

Anything by Kenny G.
Only if you subscribe to definition #2 in Post #5, otherwise it would be the other way around.
Is this fusion? Is it edgy? I don't know, but it's certainly aggressive!
Latin-jazz pianist, Michel Camilo:
Seconded for the Impact Fuse - Moscow, excellent no filler cd.
Also::::
Alko Trio - features Impact Fuze guys, sans the drummer.
Hectic Watermelon
Fragile
The Renegades
Alexander Kostarev Group
Mindflowers
Don't think this has been mentioned - Kazumi Watanabe's Spice of Life with Bruford and Berlin - phenomenal album. Unfortunately, Spice of Life Too isn't nearly as good to me, different lineup, just doesn't smoke like the first one.
Here is the setlist from the last two weeks of the local jazz/fusion show, which happens to be airing now from 6-8 eastern time. When he emails me tonights list I will post it and that should give you some edgy stuff to check out. He only likes to play stuff from 2000 and newer, with a few rare exceptions that I send him.
