A proper orchestrated overture can be found on Amon Düül II's Made in Germany album. Themes from the rest of the album can be found here.
Confirmed Bachelors: the dramedy hit of 1883...
The concept of an overture as a medley of themes to be heard in the ensuing program comes from Broadway. The term has numerous meanings in the classical tradition--it can be the prelude to an opera, or to an instrumental suite, or it can refer to the suite itself (Bach titled his orchestral suites "Overturen"), or it can be a stand-alone concert piece (like the "1812 Overture").
I saw this tour, and the second set of the show was the entire disc 2 of Six Degrees (which is excellent) but the Overture was wayyyyyy too long and people were grumbling about it, yelling "C'mon!" and "Enough already!"... that was maybe a poor choice on their part. Anyway the rest of the show was fantastic.
