There was an American band Gandalf, a Finnish band Gandalf, and the Austrian artist named Gandalf who did David Arkenstone-type stuff. Not sure which came first or is best-known.

And also The Architectural Abdabs at one point, right? And possibly just The Abdabs? They were clearly conflicted.

Actually, they were never called The Architectural Abdabs. There was an article in a student newspaper, with a headline that identified the band as such, presumably a reference to the fact that Mason and Waters were studying architecture at university. Other names they used included Sigma Six (when the band was still a six piece, with two singers, Wright and Waters both on guitar and a different bassist...this was before Bob Klose or Syd had joined) and The T-Set, I believe. And yes, it does appear that The Meggadeaths was one of the band names they used, and every time I've seen it mentioned in any of the Pink Floyd books I've mentioned, it's spelled with two g's.

I suspect they were either really indecisive about the name, or it was one of those deals, like Jethro Tull where they kept changing the name so they could get more bookings or whatever.

Oh there's another topic: bands named after Lord Of The Rings allusions.

Ron Ashton from the Stooges and Dennis Thompson of the MC5 had a band called The New Order in the 70's
