Fusion to me is just a form of jazz with rock mixed in.
However, I'm prepared for people to tell me I'm wrong.

We've hit on this subject before. Obviously, it's subjective. Do you think that prog is just a form of rock music? Though technically it is, there's so many things that distinguish it as it's own genre that it's hard for me to think of something like Gentle Giant as belonging under the same umbrella as, say, AC/DC. For me, the same is true about jazz and fusion. Fusion runs the gamut of being jazz with a sprinkling of rock sensibilities to being rock with a tiny bit of jazz influence. Dixie Dregs: I think they're generally considered to be fusion, but aside from a few of the keyboard solos, there's not much jazz in the mix. Bands like Ohm, Morglbl or The Aristocrats have more in common with rock than jazz; the only thing "jazz" about them is interactive improvisation and a broader harmonic palette. Bands like Bruford and Kenso blur the lines between prog and fusion; more writing and arranging than is generally common in fusion, but with some jazz-informed improvisation that you don't often find in prog. Hell, King Crimson used a lot of improvisation, but generally not employing the jazz "lexicon." And people think of them as prog.

So, much as I hate genre labeling and categories in general, I hear something distinctive about fusion that makes it stand out from other sub-genres of jazz. For one thing, I think of most jazz as utilizing acoustic instruments (besides drums) more than fusion, which of course is a generalization with enough exceptions. I think there's a common language with certain harmonic sensibilities and melodic clichés or licks that is prevalent in most forms of jazz that fusion is pardoned from having to adhere to. For instance, I don't hear evidence that somebody like Al Dimeola ever listened to Charlie Parker or John Coltrane, but I do hear it in the practitioners of most non-fusion jazz.

Hope at least some of that makes sense. If not... well, I tried!

Well it was certainly an over simplification, but I'm glad it helped and you're welcome!
