AAJ Review: Chick Corea: The Vigil

My review of Chick Corea's The Vigil, today at All About Jazz.

in what is one if his most hotly anticipated groups in years, featuring saxophonist/ flautist/bass clarinetist Tim Garland, guitarist Charles Altura, bassist Hadrien Feraud, drumm Marcus Gilmore and, on select tracks, percussionist Pernell Saturnino, Ravi Coltrane, Stanley Clarke and Gayle Moran Corea, it's a cross between the fusion-heavy work of Return to Forever and more acoustic concerns, but unencumbered by the egos of RTF, The Vigil - while all virtuosos in their own right, and demonstrating it plenty - is able to be considerably more about the music, and less about testosterone and chops, making for one of Corea's best records in the last couple decades.

    Review here.

I learned of this release about a week ago and I've been wanting to hear it ever since. Thanks for the review, John! Looks like the most well represented artist in my collection will get one disc further in the lead position.
