Lutz Glandien "The 5th Elephant: Virtualectric Stories"

Just spun this beast last night for the first time as part of my large recent 'haul' from ReR. This is a sonic wet dream for those that dig electronic timbres and heavy layers of musical texture. When there is an occasional groove happening, I was reminded of ProjeKct 3 a bit, yet this album goes many places where that record doesn't. Some compositions don't contain any groove/beat, and are simply aural canvases painted with a huge spectrum of manipulated sonic colors. The recording quality itself is absolutely incredible, especially the low end frequencies. I don't think this album has the scope of "Domestic Stories" for example, but is very focused in its intent. Also of note is how these improvs were considered failures, yet such great music was reborn with some creative futzing about. I dig.

Oh, here you've probably just started a love fest with Brother Udi ! I prefer the one that came after ("Lost In Rooms" - do you know it ?), but just by a tad. The two together are a classic pair.

Yeah, I enjoy Lost In Rooms a little more too. I like them both though. Not stuff I spin too frequently but always glad when I do.

This would be my guess ("Packard Goose"):

    Joe:

If you're in the audience and like what we do
Well, we want you to know that we like you all too
But as for the sucker who will write the review
    If his mind is prehensile
    (Mind is prehensile)
    He'll put down his pencil
    (Put down his pencil)
    And have himself a squat
    On the Cosmic Utensil
    (Cosmic Utensil)
    Give it all you got
    On the Cosmic Utensil
    (Cosmic Utensil)
Sit 'n spin until you rot
    On the Cosmic Utensil
    (Cosmic Utensil)
    He really needs to squat
    On the Cosmic Utensil
    (Cosmic Utensil)
    (Cosmic Utensil)

Good guess, but I eked that one out long before Joe's Garage. I've always liked to mess with words. Skilled cats call 'em, "Cats' Skills", in the the Catskills Column.
Sorry, never mind my OCD, back to Lutz.

I finally did get to "Lost in Rooms" a while back, I just forgot to post. Great motherflippin' shite, govs. Yeah, maybe I do dig that a taddy porter more than the 50,000th Elephant, but both are just great, especially if you appreciate SOUND for sound's sake. This is just superb music to spin in the dark, candle lit, scotch or brew cracked, buzzed up, clothes optional.

I like Lost in Rooms, but never warmed for The 5th Elephant -
Mabe I should give it another spin (or 10), but I doubt my mind will change (I have it for at least 5 years and keep revisiting)
However, Domestic Stories is one of my most favourite albums by anyone.

Ha - after his talk of rock music being more interesting than a string quartet

I'll have to check out what he is doing now.

Yes, I know and adore Domestic Stories.

The bit about him talking about how he had an idea, only to actually hear it months or years later from properly working it through (until the computer came along)....makes you realize how much of a genius guys like Mahler were - he would write a full symphony over the summer in Austria on holiday from conducting the NYP (Symphony, actually) - with nothing but a piano and a pen.

Oh yeah, this is sounding terrific. I love this intimate presentation - not saturated in reverb or details getting obscured in a large space. Sounds like he has incorporated some aleatoric sections to free up the rigidness of the scored material here.

So it looks like "Kyomei - Saitengesänge" is the last solo project he has recorded, yeah? This is electroacoustic or just straight up acoustic?

This guy is truly an artist - take a look at his performance
So this shows he has diversity and a apetite to truly explore diffrent horizons
take a look at his video channel - his installations and othe rtheatrical work are very impressive
