    Order The Dream Theater Albums

Well, it seems I got a pretty good response in my Rush thread. Here's the same thing for another favorite band of mine. Once again...in order of personal preference.

    Scenes From A Memory
    Images and Words
    Octavarium
    A Dramatic Turn Of Events
    Awake
    Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence
    A Change Of Seasons
    Train Of Thought
    Systematic Chaos
    Black Clouds and Silver Linings
    When Dream and Day Unite
    Falling Into Infinity

If I had to pick an all-time favorite band, it'd be DT. My least favorite album of theirs has my favorite song of theirs on it , but the rest of the album consists of covers (albeit good songs). And I can honestly say without exaggeration that I enjoy any given album about as much as any other album listed (though sometimes for different reasons).

    1. Scenes From A Memory
    2. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
    3. Black Clouds & Silver Linings
    4. Octavarium
    5. Systematic Chaos
    6. A Dramatic Turn of Events
    7. Falling Into Infinity
    8. Awake
    9. Train of Thought
    10.Images and Words
    11.When Dream and Day Unite
    12. A Change of Seasons

    Oh- and welcome to PE!

I don't own When Dream And Day Unite, but here's my ordering of the rest:

    1. A Dramatic Turn Of Events
    2. Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence
    3. A Change Of Seasons
    4. Scenes From A Memory
    5. Images and Words (Only this highly placed due to "Metropolis Part 1")
    6. Black Clouds and Silver Linings (More for the covers than the originals)
    7. Falling Into Infinity (I may be selling this one short though ... "Peruvian Skies" and "Hollow Years" are pretty special)
    8. Systematic Chaos
    9. Train Of Thought
    10. Octavarium (Can't seem to get into this one)
    11. Awake

If you really want to order Dream Theater's albums, go to Amazon.com.

Images and Words - Still has to be my favorite
Awake - Something about the heaviness and attitude I love
A Dramatic Turn Of Events - Awesome return to form
Octavarium - Love the title trade, the rest is still good
Scenes From A Memory - "Spirit Carries On" my favorite track ever (by anyone). Not sure why this isn't higher, I like it a lot.
Train Of Thought - Great consistency on this one.
Systematic Chaos - Love some, could do without the "Portnoy wants to be 22 again" parts.
Black Clouds and Silver Linings - Another that should be higher but there's a lot of competition here.
Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence - Not a big fan of Disc 1, love Disc 2.
A Change Of Seasons - Not really a true CD.
Falling Into Infinity - No thanks.
When Dream and Day Unite - Double no thanks.

Damn straight ... shoddy 57 minute running length! That's what I call "weaksauce".

My first DT experience was seeing them open for Marillion at the Ritz in NYC, with Charlie Dominici on vocals, so I have a soft spot for WDADU.

    4. A Change of Seasons
    5. Awake

I really love DT's live albums the best, but here is how I would rank the studio albums:

    1. Awake
    2. Scenes from a Memory
    3. Change of Seasons
    4. Dramatic Turn of Events
    5. Images and Words
    6. Systematic Chaos
    7. Octavarium
    8. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
    9. Black Clouds and Silver Linings
    10. Train of Thought
    11. Falling Into Infinity

Being a big DT fan, believe it or not, I never heard When Dreams and Days Unite.

  12. #12
First heard Images when released ,hated it. Returned to it two years later, loved it.
Am I the only one though who wishes that Portnoy was still the main man on the drumstool?
    Anyway here's my list
    1)Scenes
    2)Six Degrees
    3)Images
    4)Awake
    5)Falling into infinity
    6)Octavarium
    7)Dramatic turn
    8)Black Clouds
    9)Systematic
    10)Change of Seasons
The two other releases have been listened to maybe three times each ,and that is enough for me!

    Live Scenes From New York
    Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence
    Train Of Thought
    Octavarium
    Awake
    Systematic Chaos
    Black Clouds And Silver Linings
    Falling Into Infinity
    Images And Words
    A Dramatic Turn Of Events
    When Dream And Day Unite

... Live Scenes From New York is my own personal preference over the studio versions of Scenes and A Change Of Seasons. Far superior IMO.

This one is really tough, especially after the first 5 where they are pretty close to even to my ears. I will go with:

    1. Scenes From A Memory
    2. Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence
    3. Images And Words
    4. Train Of Thought
    5. Awake (really disappointed when this came out, but it has actually aged quite well).
    6. Train Of Thought
    7. Systematic Chaos
    8. Dramatic Turn Of Events
    9. Octavarium
    10. Falling Into Infinity
    11. Change Of Seasons
    12. When Dream And Day Unite

Here is my take. And like Rush, not a bad album in the bunch...

Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence - Glass Prison just kills, and lots of great stuff here, quite diverse too
Images and Words - If it were not for the dreaded triggered drum sound this would be first -amazing songs like Learning To Live, Metropolis etc.
Scenes From A Memory - I hate concept albums, love the individual songs, especially Home
Systematic Chaos - In The Presence Of Enemies, one of my favorites of theirs
Octavarium - Title track is soooo epic
A Dramatic Turn Of Events - still new to me, could move up
Awake - great but a tad darker. Awesome recording production
Train Of Thought - heavy, heavy, heavy, a lot to take in all at once. Love it though, just can't listen all the way through
Black Clouds and Silver Linings - Count of Tuscanny is one of their great epics. Very diverse album
A Change Of Seasons - really an EP, but title track is one of their very best
When Dream and Day Unite - poor Charlie was not cut out for prog-metal. But this is the album that made me a fan. Terrible production, cool tunes.
Falling Into Infinity - too commercial thanks to record label pressure. Not what they do best, but the results still work. Derek is great outside DT. With them? Not so much.

Wow, very little love for When Dream and Day Unite. Sure, its second to last on my list, but essential. Yeah, the production is horrible, and Charlie was a poor fit for the band. Moore's lyrics are way too wordy and busy, and Charlie could barely keep up. I had heard keyboards in metal before, but not like this. Moore had all kinds of leads and solos, he was a major part of their sound, not just window dressing. And Petrucci's shredding? Instant fan. This album totally blew my socks off back in 1989, never heard anything quite like it at the time. I guess part of my love of this is nostalgic, but I do really enjoy some of the songs on this, like the surprising upbeat turn that "Only A Matter of Time" takes, or flat out metal of "A Fortune in Lies", or the fairly radio friendly "Status Seeker". What really got me was the very proggy intro to "The Ones Who Help To Set The Sun", which is following by very intense bass and drum work -nearly blew out the windows a few times cranking that part. Never gave metal much of a chance before this, other than some Maiden. And was convinced prog was long since dead. Then to hear this album? Best of both worlds for me at the time. This album holds a very special place in my heart.

I actually have much love for WDaDU. Not a bad song on it. DT have actually played several of those songs on more recent live albums they've put out.

Nah, you're not the only one. I have a soft spot for Portnoy in that band, too. He certainly worked his butt off to get them where they are.

My favourite by them is the video, "Score", with "Scenes for New York" a close second. For some reason I have a hard time sitting through a whole album of theirs, but their vids and concerts kick butt.

Haven't listened to this band lately, but this thread has me excited about going back to them. I couldn't give a top ten, but:

    1. Train of Thought
    2. Systemaic Chaos
    3. Six Degrees
    4. Octavarium

I always love when a band does not forget or ignore their past. There is an official bootleg of DT playing WDADU live in it's entirety, on it's 15th anniversary in 2004, and Labrie is in good form. And it's cool that they bring out Charlie for a couple songs for the encore, including Metroplis, which dated back to his days in the band. Derek Sherinian also joins then, a fun jam ensues. The guitars are lacking a little bit of crunch, but they are fine renditions of the debut album.
