    The record company? :-)

I don't think a compilation is the same as a body of work intended by the artist to be released as an album, myself, but others will challenge that view, I'm sure.

There are some songs on Relics, that you won't find anywhere else - the excellent Biding My Time, for example. And, some compilation albums have the special atmosphere - Relics I believe is one of such albums. JT's Living in the Past is another...

Honorable mention to both the Pompeii DVD, and the Tonight Let's All...(early Syd Barrett era live London Footage).
Also, special mention to "A Nice Pair," though it's a compilation...it had great cover art!

    In no particular order:

    1. Oakland Coliseum 9 May 1977
    2. Fillmore West 29 April 1970
    3. KQED studios, San Francisco 29 April 1970
    4. the Japanese show from March of 72 that's on like a million bootlegs (Sapporo, I think was the city)
    5. the Boston Garden show from 75
    6. the Hamilton Ontario show from 75
    7. Madison Square Garden 77 (whichever one it was that had the Wish You Were Here set that's on the Welcome To The Machine bootleg, I think it's 2 July or 3 July)
    8. BBC radio broadcast from 30 September 1971
    9. The Wall (mainly for Hey You and Nobody Home)
    10. Delicate Sound Of Thunder

I exempted A Momentary Lapse Of Reason from inclusion because I view it as a David Gilmour solo album (albeit an excellent one), but most of the better songs on A Momentary Lapse Of Reason appear on Delicate Sound of Thunder anyway (other than Terminal Frost).

I'm rather surprised that Obscured by Clouds figures on almost every list. Not that I don't like it, but I tend to think of it as the most "minor" release by the classic-era Floyd.

Too much album material, not enough rarities, if you ask me. I don't think any of the Pink Floyd compilations that exist would be on my list. Though since I included bootlegs on mine, I guess one could theoretically compile a "perfect" compilation using all the 60's era singles, Biding My Time, Embryo, Seabirds, the Zabriskie Point songs, etc.

Actually, other than Biding My Time, I believe every single song on Relics has been released elsewhere, either on one of the regular albums (eg Interstellar Overdrive, Remember A Day, etc) another compilation (eg See Emily Play and Arnold Layne), or as part of the Shine On boxset from the early 90's (which had an entire disc devoted to the 60's era singles, and therefore includes Julia Dream, Arnold Layne, See Emily Play, and Paintbox). So you really Relics is "essential" for one song only.

Ummagumma is on every list so far. Nice to see, I love that thing to pieces and it's always baffled me how slagged it can get. I know it's unorthodox in format and quite experimental but look who we're talking about here. Especially at that time! And my favourite cover of theirs to boot!

Well, if having some tracks that later appeared in the Shine On set is a disqualification, that rules out A Saucerful of Secrets, Meddle, DSOTM, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall, and A Momentary Lapse of Reason in their entirety! Anyway, if you must cavil about the duplicated tracks on Relics, it only makes sense to point to the ones that were already on album at the time Relics was released (and exactly which tracks those are depends on whether you were a US or European record buyer).
