Chicago Jazz Festival - Labour Day Weekend

This looks pretty awesome, and for a free event no less! I think a road trip may be in order; highlights include:

    - Jack DeJohnette's Special Edition "Chicago Legends Edition" with Muhal Richard Abrams, Roscoe Mitchell, and Henry Threadgill
    - Wadada Leo Smith's Ten Freedom Summers
    - Charles Lloyd Quartet featuring Bill Frisell
    - Hamid Drake Quartet with Kidd Jordan, William Parker and Cooper-Moore
    - Satoko Fujii’s Orchestra Chicago
    - Rudresh Mahanthappa’s GAMAK
    - Atomic
    - Hamid Drake & Bindu

Woah. That truly is a MONSTER lineup. Absolutely the best one I can remember in quite some time.

    Yeah, great lineup!

... and I'll be playing there with Chevere de Chicago, a band I've been in for 30+ years. Our token "famous guy" is Howard Levy (piano & harmonica) of Flecktones fame. We're at the North Promenade Stage at 3:30 - 4:30 on Saturday, August 31st. Come by, say hi!

LAst time I saw Roscoe was more than 30 years ago. I would love to see him now, as an "elder statesman." I would love to see him play with Jack DeJohnette, too.
I'm not lazy. I just work so fast I'm always done.

Thanks, Ken! I did, despite numerous problems with the stagehands, soundman and backline people. We never got a soundcheck at all, they put us so behind schedule. But why dwell on that; we played well and had a good turnout and people were very receptive.

It was an excellent weekend; including unofficial "after hours" show I managed to squeeze in 23 concerts in four days:

    Thursday:
    Harrison Bankhead Septet
Hamid Drake's Chicago Trio with Ernest Dawkins & Harrison Bankhead
Jack DeJohnette's Special Chicago Legends Edition with Roscoe Mitchell, Henry Threadgill, Muhal Richard Abrams & Larry Gray
    Aram Shelton Quartet

    Friday:
Hamid Drake & Michael Zerang with Tsukasa Taiko
Geof Bradfield's Melba! featuring Randy Weston
Wadada Leo Smith's Ten Freedom Summers
Charles Lloyd Quintet featuring Bill Frisell & Jason Moran
Renee Baker's East to West Project featuring Satoko Fujii's Kaze

    Saturday:
    The Frank Russell Band
Hamid Drake's Palm of Soul Quartet with Kidd Jordan, Cooper-Moore & William Parker
    Ernie Krivda Quartet
    Satoko Fujii Orchestra Chicago
    Gregory Porter
    Rudresh Mahathappa's GAMAK
Afterhours Jam Session with Kidd Jordan / William Parker / Alvin Fielder + Guests (I didn't recognize them all and the musicians weren't introduced, but the guests included Michael Zerang, Paal Nilssen-Love, and another drummer, Henry Grimes, Nate McBride, and Ingebrigt Haker-Flaten on bass, Jeff Albert and Jeb Bishop on trombone, Fredrik Ljungkvist and another saxophone player, and an unidentified clarinet player).

    Sunday:
    Fast Citizens
    The Engines
    Fareed Haque & Tony Monaco
    Atomic
    Hamid Drake & Bindu "Reggaeology"
    The Robert Glasper Experiment
Donald Harrison & the Congo Square Nation

And that's not even including seeing the first 10 minutes of "a Tribute to Ken Chaney" before it was rained out on Friday, or the last 15 minutes of Stafford James on Saturday and Jimmy Heath on Sunday after returning from dinner breaks.

Off to the Guelph Jazz Festival tomorrow!

I understand; we weren't on the big stage. Ah well, maybe next year. That was the third or fourth time we've played at the Chicago Jazz Festival; hopefully we'll be there again before we all croak.

Sorry, you were playing the same time as the Satoko Fujii Orchestra. Priorities, man!
