Top debuts that were the best thing that they did

As a retort to the other thread...

    Some might be

    Amplifier-Amplifier
The Mars Volta-Deloused in the comatorium (maybe... I like the 3rd one Amputecture too.)
King Crimson-Court Of The Crimson King (but I like the 80's albums as well)
The Enid-In The Region Of the Summer Stars (although I prefer the re-recording)
    Velvet Underground-Velvet Underground and Nico

I don't like country music, but I don't mean to denigrate those who do. And for the people who like country music, denigrate means 'put down.'- Bob Newhart

I considered this one, but I just love the Between Nothingness/Trident stuff too much!

Of all the singers and bands I like I can only think of three examples where the debut is my favourite album and the one I consider the best.

Kate Bush - The Kick Inside
    Crosby, Stills & Nash - s/t
Ian Dury - New Boots & Panties

Kate Bush popped into my mind too, only because TKI was a very strong debut, but I can't say I think it's her best work. Maybe it's her most consistent album, though.

HEART - Steamboat Annie. A true well-crafted masterpiece, and everything to follow was uneven hit or miss.

Violent Femmes (actually, their later albums might have been ok, but I think they probably lost some of the rough urgency of their debut)
Big Audio Dynamite - This Is Big Audio Dynamite (actually, the very first song on that album, Medicine Show, was their peak IMO).

Once Anne Wilson put on weight they started calling this Steamboat Annie.

Brand X, DJ Shadow, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Donald Fagen, Sting, Moby Grape, Return to Forever, REM, Mars Volta, Television, too many hip-hop and punk bands to count.

Agree with King Crimson, Marillion, and Anglagard. Also:

    Peter Gabriel(solo)
    Queen

Asia, Boston & king Crimson are the obvious choices.

If solo albums count i'd go for Daltrey's debut & Hackett's Voyage of the Acolyte !

Arenas debut, whilst a good album is actually their weakest!

Thought of one more: Terry Reid's Bang Bang album
