My review of Craig Taborn Trio's Chants, today at All About Jazz.

In recent years, pianist Craig Taborn has become an increasing presence on the label, most notably for his tremendous solo piano outing, Avenging Angel (2011), his first album under his own name since 2004's Junk Magic (Thirsty Ear). It looks like ECM doesn't want that much time to pass between recordings, and so, two years later, we have Chants, a tremendous trio recording with the rhythm team of bassist Thomas Morgan and drummer Gerald Cleaver - two more American musicians showing up more regularly on the label, most recently together on Polish trumpeter's superb Wislawa (2013).

Chants continues the motivic explorations of Avenging Angels, but with the three-way interaction of a trio, there's even more potential for magic, and it happens plenty across this set of Taborn originals.
