Somebody turned me on to this a couple weeks ago - Tim Smolens from Estradasphere has a side project called I.S.S. where he lovingly pays homage to Brian Wilson. He just dropped this one today on the ole youtube to drum up some interest for his upcoming release, it's pretty gosh darn epic if you ask me.

That's pretty sweet Progholio. We could do an entire thread about homages, inspired by, or just plain rips of Brian Wilson's work. The Explorers Club alone have done two albums worth already. (Brilliantly I might add) and Mark Eric made one of the best Brian Wilson albums that Wilson didn't make himself (A Midsummers Day Dream) . Here's one of my favorites, Tears for Fears - Brian Wilson Said.

    Just love this one...

Their 3rd album, 'Together' is their best overall, but all my favorites aren't on YouTube. Well this one's still pretty nice:

They're just so good aren't they? There are several on the new album that are stunning, but no clips posted.

There's nothing like the real thing... a sublime solo recording from Brian. I love this song.

Some present day sunshine on a great old song from the Hollies performed by The MonaLisa Twins. They do a ton of Beatles covers and others as well. Got to love those sibling harmonies.

^^^ Great song and great clip, WR! I used to sing this song in a band, and I remember it took us several tries to get the very different (for that time) harmonies right, especially the harmony on the word "...bought" in the bridge.

Why can't I remember anything useful instead of just musical minutiae?

I don't know where else to turn but the Sunshine Pop Thread!

This week I discovered two artists that SORT of seem like they fall under the Sunshine Pop umbrella, both thanks to Bandcamp:

    1) The Memories

Just check out this album, most songs are under two minutes!

    2) Bigott

Spanish popster who's songs are in English, and I think he records in LA mostly. I preordered his upcoming album, but check out this one:

Let me know what you think!

Well, of the two I definitely preferred Bigott, a little more polished and inspired. You definitely dropped them into the right thread.

^ Yeah, I do prefer Bigott. His new album is released today so you can listen to the whole thing on Bandcamp.

Here's one I stumbled upon on Youtube. Kinda has a High Llamas meets Stereolab vibe. Not unpleasant.

I really enjoyed their album II from a few years back, kind of struck me as a lo-fi psych band. I've notice they'e evolved a bit, just a slightly more refined sound with touches of disco added to the mix. I definitely need to get in touch with some of their newer material.

Speaking of the Mona Lisa Twins, my wife has been on a huge kick over them for almost the past year, she now has a couple of their cd's. I really enjoy the cover material, they do a fabulous job with it. There is also a disc of all original material which is quite excellent too.

I also see lot's of love for The Explorers Club which i completely love them as well. I see now that they are a full-on Beach Boys tribute band called Sail-On and they play around quite a bit. I would love it if they could gain enough popularity to incorporate their original material and go back to being The Explorers Club only with more fans, they deserve it.

Some very 'Association" inspired sunshine from The Fun and Games.

...and from an earlier incarnation of this Texas based band:

I've been listening to the Birthday album by The Association lately. The Fun and Games have really nailed the Association backing vocal sound.

Birthday is my favorite Association album, followed a close second by Insight Out. It was the Associations greatest hits album that really turned me on to Sunshine Pop in the first place. Although I had always loved The Monkees back in the day, The Association got me wondering what else was out there worth hunting down. One of the other great treasures I found out about was Roger Nichols and his Small Circle Of Friends, which has recently been reissued.

I just heard this little piece of sunshiney power pop on the radio a few minutes ago. For all my Progday buddies out there this one features 2 consecutive year veteran Fernando Perdomo, was nice surprise to hear his name mentioned on the local airwaves.

Went to see Brian's show in Bangor last night. I had kept my expectations low because I know Brian is gettin' on in years, but Damn, the show was fantastic. Even though it was clearly a bit of a struggle for Brian, he's surrounded himself with some amazing musicians and Al Jardine and Blondie Chaplin sounded excellent. Great show, great time. I'm glad I went to see a legend.

^^ That's awesome, man. Glad to hear Brian is still putting on a good show and that you had a good time.

I love that guy. He is truly a legend.

I missed this when originally posted, but went to check this out, heard the opening track and had to laugh at how great it was. Instead of continuing to listen, immediately went to amazon and bought the cd in spite of the $30 cost. Thanks for sharing that, I'd never even heard of him.
